Checking In on New Screensaver

This Screensaver track has been around for a few days, but I’ve been busy okay! Still, I love the rawness of the tune, so I had to be sure that someone over here gave it a look-see. It’s a really challenging vibe, in terms of my ability to pigeonhole things and put them into little boxes, but I’ll give it a go. The track has these varying textures; it feels very much like an early 00s synth band in one channel; the other ear gets to hear this industrial toying, like machines gone awry. All of it gets paired up with this exasperated punk howl that dominates the band’s performance while also fusing all the pieces into one concise musical throttling. the group will release Decent Shapes on October 20th via Poison City and Upset the Rhythm.

Michael Beach Shares Only a Memory

I feel like Michael Beach‘s new record is like my own personal birthday party, with each song a new little gift waiting to be unwrapped. Today’s single is a melancholy ballad built upon a piano ballad, moving gradually as Beach carefully narrates with a solemn vocal performance. You get these discordant little elements of interlude in the song’s latter half, building on the promise that we’re going to get a little bit of experimental mood pieces collected for this new release. There’s this great little emphatic moment just before the 2 minute mark that I really appreciated, adding some punctuation to the tune too, so listen closely there. The self-titled EP will be out on September 30th via Goner/Poison City.

Michael Beach Announces New EP

Our old pal Michael Beach is back at it, today bringing news from Australia that the songwriter will be releasing a new self-titled EP this Fall. Below we’ve got the the first sneak listen, with a track that feels like a feverish march on our sanity. For me, there’s really two sides to what Beach and company are doing. Musically, there’s this furious push and pounding rhythm, setting up the song as a sort of punk rock party anthem. But, Michael’s vocals are extremely steady in that mix, headstrong and just a melody above spoken word; it gives him this sort of rocker croon that slides right into the grooves. Stoked to see he’ll be touring the US this Fall, with a stop at Goner Fest…speaking of, Goner Records is putting out the EP along with Poison City on September 30th.

Poison City Records Announce A Collection of Songs from Palm Springs

Whoa whoa whoa! Don’t get confused…we’re not talking about Palm Springs, California, but rather the songwriting project of Melbourne’s Erica Dunn, who also plays in Mod Con and Tropical Fuck Storm. Poison City Records just announced they’ll be releasing A Collection of Songs, which compiles out of stock 7″ and early tape releases that are probably pretty hard to find over here in the States. Just wanted to give you all a little sample of Dunn’s work, and by jumping into this introduction maybe entice you to go back and listen to her work. I chose this single as it’s got this striking bravado balanced with Erica’s powerful vocals, so it comes off as brave and angelic, ultimately just striking the listener in the face! A Collection of Songs will be out on December 10th.

Mod Con Share X-Ray Single

In what is looking to be a huge week of releases, Melbourne’s Mod Con add to that with their forthcoming Modern Condition, dropping this Friday via Poison City Records. They drop their latest single, fueled by these guitars knifing their way in and out of the mix, gritty and distorted, though sometimes sharp and angular. I love the vocals too; they feel like they’re from another era in a sense, filled with bravado and boldness, still dripping with a bit of a hook in there. Sounds like Crucial Taunt, with a whole lot more attitude. Be sure to get a copy of the band’s LP this Friday; link it HERE.

Michael Beach Shares You Found Me Out

When Michael Beach first announced Dream Violence with “De Facto Blues,” I got exactly what I expected, considering the last time we heard from him he’d been on tour with Thigh Master; it was all energy. But, if you’ve heard his songwriting, you had to know there was a heartbreaking ballad just hanging in there. On this new tune, it’s built around Michael and this lonesome piano line from the get-go; it presents this solitary figure, delivering this personal performance that’s crushes your soul in the best way. But, Beach builds in this buoyant pop moment around the 1:12 mark, where it begins to open up the song into this delicately woven opus; strings pull at your heartstrings; keys exploded the galaxy behind Michael’s striking pipes. This one’s got all the damned feels! The new LP drops on March 19th via Goner/Poison City.

Michael Beach Announces Dream Violence

We’ve been covering Michael Beach for several years now, whether it be his solo work or his role in ATH faves Thigh Master, he’s always given us just the right rock dosage. Now we’ve got news from overseas that he’s going to be working with Goner Records for his new LP, Dream Violence (and Poision City in Australia). Honestly, my favorite thing are the two sides of Michael’s voice here. He starts off with this calming croon, something that seems to settle the rambunctious guitar work that opens the tune. But, just as soon as you’ve adjusted, guitars start to ring heavier and Beach takes on this primal howl that pushes everything to the very edge. Flare and discord marry and scuttle about in the midst of it all, creating this maniacal rocker burdened by its desire for pop sensibility. You can’t go wrong turning this one up real loud! The LP is out March 19th.

Michael Beach Visits America Tonight at Beerland

Michael Beach came to our attention a few years ago, as a friend of a friend from Australia connected us…as he’s currently living in Melbourne. He’s got a handful of releases under his belt, but he ventures across the pond for his US tour on the back of a fresh 7″, which features the below single for “Sessin,” recently released by Poison City Records. Tonight he ventures out into the Austin nightlife over at Beerland, joined by the likes of Minimal Animal, Chronophage and Endless Sewer.
