Ramesh Returns with West

Ramesh has been going it alone since his famed Voxtrot outfit called it a day. Fortunately, he works at his own pace, offering singles from time to time, always enjoyable. This new track has a huge vocal performance from Ramesh, with the instrumentation slowly building throughout the song’s core. Perhaps its because we once released a Ramesh LP, or just because I spent a ton of time with Voxtrot, but his voice always has this famliarity to it, with an added emotive power now that guitars have quieted a bit in place of synths. His keen ear for orchestrated pop is clearly on display below, so enjoy.

Plums Ready EP02

Up until now, I always think of songs with the title Wendy as an ode to Descendents (even though I know that’s an ode to Beach Boys in and of itself). That might change now that I’ve heard the pop amalgamation coming from Plums; there’s something sinisterly sweet in this song. Perhaps it’s the R&B references at work in the harmonies, or maybe the hauntingly playful moments that creep up from the distance. I guess in the end, it’s a fairly simple pop song, though it’s being presented in a unique repackaging…hopefully drawing in listeners. The group will drop EP02 on September 7th via Forged Artifacts.

Ski Lodge Quietly Drops New Tune

I’m really enjoying the way Andrew Marr is working with is Ski Lodge project; he’s slowly just dropping tunes as he works towards a new LP. And now we have one of those such tunes, a slow jam of sorts built upon light guitar rings and a piano backbone, leaving plenty of space for a somewhat forlorn Marr to operate with his voice. He seems to be working with the concept that he’s not accomplished all that he set out, a lament of missed opportunities. When its all said and done, you’re left with another striking entry into the catalog; let’s just hope we don’t have to wait too long for more new tunes.

Slowed Pop from Her’s

Her’s will be dropping their new album, Invitation to Her’s, next week on the 24th, so we’re fortunate to sample one more tune before sliding into next week. This number is a smooth number, working slowing to evoke the maximum emotional appeal. Most of the track revolves around electronic organ sounds providing the groundwork for the circular movement of the guitar lines. Vocals seem disinterested in the pace of things, seemingly working at their own pace; I particularly enjoy the softness of chorus with the bass bubbling in from just beneath. Hopefully you’re into this tune, and if so, maybe you’ll grab the LP next Friday.

Brand New Day Wave

We haven’t heard from Day Wave since The Days We Had…though we did catch the band’s set at ACL last fall. Now, we’re getting a glimpse of where Jackson Phillips has been with a new single popping up today. It’s a bright pop song number, with just a hint of atmospherics textured into his vocals, giving off that popular dream quality. While the song’s front half is filled with energy and hooks, it’s the back side that has my interest, with a thoughtful fade out that wraps you up in warmth before the song disappears. No word on a release, but the way Phillips works, I expect an EP any day now!

Uplifting Number from Summer Magic

Summer time brings Summer Magic! Summer Magic brings bright hook-laden pop tunes! I love exclamation points! So this song snuck into my head and it won’t leave. There’s something nostalgic that it brings up, especially when the vocals change slightly during the chorus…feels familiar like great pop songs do. Something from the snare work to the melody definitely recalls summer time, so the name’s definitely apt. This song will feature on the new album Sharks and Other Dangers, which will be available to the masses on August 31st. Go on, be a pop fan.

Her’s Release A Playful Track

A piece of straight-up playful pop has been unleashed upon the world. Our friends over at Heist or Hit sent word of the latest track from Her’s, a band that has 100% been on the hit side of that label name for the ATH team. The full-length Invitation to Her’s drops August 24th. Starting with a little bit of Casio keyboard drum machine and hook, “Harvey” charms you like a happy secret. It is a pleasant three and half minutes well worth your investment on a Thursday.

Smokescreens Offer New Gem

Seems like just the other day we were praising the first Smokescreens single from the band’s news album, and already, they’re back with a sunny number to sweeten the summer season. Musically speaking, it sounds like the Replacements decided to create a jangle pop band…so they’ve got that going for them. The vocal display has this inherent bounce that gives the tune that memorable punch that will surely keep you coming back for more. I don’t know about you, but I get the feeling that Used to Yesterday is going to be a smash summer hit; it drops on July 13th via Slumberland.

Introducing Lauren Lakis

I’ve been streaming this new single from Baltimore based artist Lauren Lakis all morning and I’m finally ready to stop being selfish and share it with you guys. The track in question, “Lead Us On”, is both fuzzy and gritty, while still bringing some brightness with its raw and lo-fi take on shoegaze/pop. One can certainly feel swept away in the emotional and very personal feel of the track. Welcome to the music world Lauren.

Lauren Lakis will release her first solo LP entitled FEROCIOUS on June 22nd via Cavity Search Records.

Delighting Pop from Melby

Everyone’s all about that PNKSLM over in Sweden, but another label that’s really been doing it for me lately is fellow Stockholm posse, Rama Lama Records. They’ve just set up another great release with this new single from Melby. The band definitely fits into our modern evolution of dream/indie pop stylings, though I think there’s just a hint more fragility in the voice…it’s almost like a crystalline object you don’t want to drop for fear of shattering. However, the song really excels during the chorus where the pace is picked up, guitars ring just a bit louder and the bass bobs along. For real, this song rules.
