Scottish Pop from True Gents

While my love of the last few years has clearly been my fascination with the Aussie scene, the pop music of Scotland has always been near and dear to my cliched heart. Today I’d like to introduce you to True Gents, a new act to my ears that draw from a huge swell of sounds, though most notably the pop sort that you’ll hear on this tune. The opening moments are quite nice, almost with a vibe akin to Arab Strap, though much more positive; there’s some quiet strings and children playing beneath the front of the mix, so keep your ears close to the speakers. A slight pick up comes after the two minute mark, pulling in drums and amplifying the strings just a touch. Look for the band’s new release, Blood Moon, to come your way soon.

Infectious Pop Tune from The Golden Age of TV

We’re midway through our week here, and why not enjoy the spirited pop of The Golden Age of TV. The music’s vibe works in contrast to the song’s message of holding on to what’s passed, but even the happiest songs sometimes have a message we all need to hear. I think Bea Fletcher’s vocal performance is spot-on, especially as she stretches her voice to reach those higher notes. It seems like this Leeds-based project is just getting started, so expect to hear more from them in the near future…I promise I’ll help you out.

Brand New Ocean Party Track

One of the great things about having a multitude of great singers and songwriters in one band, such as The Ocean Party, is that they never seem to stop writing music. They’ve returned home from an extensive US tour, which surely won them more fans; and, they return home with a new track for your ears. How do you listen to pop music like this and not fall in love; it even includes a nice little horn serenading you in the song’s latter half. All we know at this point is the band plan to release a new album at some point in 2017, so stay tuned for even more great pop.

Stream Let Go by Delay Trees

We’ve featured new music from Delay Trees for a few months now, but its time to fill in all the gaps by allowing you to venture off into blissful listen with a stream of Let Go in its entirety. But, stop now if you don’t love listening to really great pop music. There’s tons of touchstones on the album, from modern expansive pop tropes to the intimacy of joyfully solemn bedroom pop. Through it all, Let Go feels like the great Brit pop record that never got made; it’s the sort that walks the fine line between artistry and accessibility, filled with warm tones and melodies made to feel personal. Look for the new album as it drops this Friday via Soliti Music.

Quick One From Mr. Husband

If you aren’t familiar with the name Kenny Tompkins, you really should be. He’s released tons of home recordings over the last several years and helped create super rising indie label Yellow K Records. He’s done it all. Today he’s let loose on us this new single called “Riding a Lightning Bolt” under his new moniker Mr. Husband. It’s a short, somewhat quiet pop tune that sounds like it came straight from Mr. Tompkins ever fruitful home recordings. I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

This track appears on Mr. Husband’s debut album Plaid on Plaid due out on May 5th via Yellow K Records.

WOMPS Kill it Again (SXSW band)

Man Glasgow band WOMPS truly resonates here at ATH. We’ve been pumping this band for a couple of years now and I know everyone here is finally happy to see them getting the attention they deserve in the bigger media outlets. Ahead of their appearance at SXSW next week, the band released this sweet new track on Monday entitled “Darling”. It reminds me a lot of what fellow Scots Glasvegas used to sound like before they, well… ya know. It’s a killer track.

Jangling Pop from Gentle Brent

You might know Brent Randall from his work as Pinecones, but he’s changing the moniker to Gentle Brent, offering up a brand new album titled Just Dandy. This song’s opening guitar will wrap around you from the get-go, just as the vocals playfully bounce their way into the number. The vocals clearly have the focus, almost giving off a dose of swing in the way they move back and forth with stretched melodies. It’s a short spurt of pop music, dripping with sugar for your ears; it’s available now via Jigsaw Records.

New Gem from Delay Trees

I’ve been reinvigorated by the pop music bug (I owe this to catching the Ocean Party last night), so it’s great that this new Delay Trees tune came into the old inbox. For me, this song is all about execution; you’ve got to take a simple formula and make it meaningful, which the band clearly does. It opens with vocals and a light guitar behind, then there’s a movement of elevation as the drums and keys join in to uplift the song, and listener. The chorus has this brilliant melody that’s intoxicating; it reminds me of early Travis (and that’s a compliment). This tune opens the band’s new album Let Go, which hits worldwide via Soliti on April 23rd.

Fun New Tune from Her’s

There’s a breed of frivolous pop out there that always gets you going, and I think Her’s are crafting precisely that. I can’t help but to recall bits of Junior Senior in their craftsmanship, maybe even mixed in with a little bit of J. Casablancas solo work. I mean, listen to the bass and tell me you don’t want to get up and shake it with the nearest person! Oh, and hand claps! Bring back hand claps! This tune will appear on their new collection, Songs of Her’s,which hits on March 12th via Heist or Hit Records.
