Pop Vibes from Terribly Yours

terriblyWhat makes a song explode in the interwebs? I’m not sure exactly what it is, but I think this number from Terribly Yours is one of those tunes that will get traction once it gets in the right hands. It’s relaxed in almost every way, but there’s this playful pop texture that seems to drive the tune forward. I actually love the guitar parts that are present when the vocals step aside for a moment, driving home the song’s emotional appeal. I can’t wait to hear the entirety of A Bloom Beyond, which will finally be released this Friday!

Premiere: Dream Cult Release “Jackson Canon”

dreamcultI love a good pop song, especially when it’s filled with melodies and hooks in the vocals; this is precisely what you’ll get from the latest Dream Cult single. This song has all these little guitar textures, weaving in and out beneath the coolly delivered vocals. The stuttering of guitars and drums that occurs throughout always prepares the audience for a blast of pure pop. Overall, it’s the execution of this song that really delivers; good songwriting supersedes all other cool guy superlatives. Look for the band’s brand new tape this Friday courtesy of the ever-reliable Old Flame Records.

Retro Pop From The Conquerors

unnamed (2)As you can possibly tell from my lack of posts recently, I haven’t been finding much new music I’m into recently as I delve deeper into back catalogs. Sometimes though a band like Kansas City based The Conquerors comes along and offers me just enough of a throwback sound to draw me in and believe in the new music scene again. It’s as if a garage, psych band from the modern era (which is played out as hell if you ask me) blended with a 60s band like Paul Revere & The Raiders. Thanks for restoring my faith in creativity.

New album Wyld Time is due out August 26th via High Dive Records.

Swinging Bit of Pop from James Leonard Hewitson

jamesWhile James Leonard Hewiston admires the anti-pop of Adam Green and the likes, his newest single seems to lay more in the vein of maybe an Albert Hammond Jr.It’s got these huge distorted pop guitars swelling to meet the turn of the vocal notes in the chorus. The lyrics themselves are a touch redundant, but they serve a purpose in driving home the message of hope that seems to hang in Lewiston’s song here. This is the first in a slew of singles James has planned for you to enjoy as the year draws to a close (we’re halfway there!).

More Great Pop from Boys Forever

boysWe’ve covered a few of the great tunes from Patrick Doyle’s new project, Boys Forever, and here’s yet another one as we draw closer to the release of the self-title debut for Amour Foo. It’s got the expected bounce to keep it catchy, but the video below also fulfills in that it provides the sunny attitude true pop fans understand. You can be down on your luck, and somehow songs like this just make you feel better about the world. No need to keep going here…just listen to the track.

Blast This Ballad from Luke Rathborne

lukeIt’s easy to get swept up in the hype and buzz around all the bands out there, but sometimes it’s best if you just settle down and fall back into what you love. As a kid, my house was filled with music, mostly Motown from my moms and folk/country from my dad; it somehow blended into a love for great pop ballads…even if I know I’m “supposed” to hate something. I think that’s where I fell in love with this new Luke Rathborne track. You can’t listen to this song and not feel an emotional pull, or at least I can’t. There’s a slight impurity to his voice, and the construction of the song around piano and strings is stellar. You like ballads? Here you go.

More New Music from Hayman Kupa Band

haymankupaI recently wrote about how prolific Darren Hayman has been, having just released a new single for Fortuna Pop. Now he’s back with the Hayman Kupa Band, comprised primarily of he and Emma Kupa of Mammoth Penguins/Standard Fare. Emma opens up this new track claiming “I’m an asshole,” which is the self-deprecating humor that pervades the song, though it’s truly a song about longing for a partner. It’s hard to turn away from this sprite-ly tune…in part because it’s so great, and also because these two have been such a huge part of my listening as of the last few years. I particularly love Emma’s vocals just around the 2 minute mark. Enjoy this track, and keep your ears peeled for more from the band.

Bedroom Pop from Reptaliens

reptaliensWhile initially thought this track would have fit perfectly in a John Hughes film, it’s still perfectly aligned with where a lot of music is coming from these days. There’s a natural softness to this new song from Reptaliens, subtly touching the song up with light keyboard touches and saxophone washes. I love that it just sort of hangs out there in the world, floating carefully through my ears, leaving me enchanted. I definitely dig this sound, and look forward to the band’s new EP, which is slated for release later on in July.

Low Key Pop from Few Bits

fewbitsMusically I’m all over the place today, but I think this Few Bits would fit in any day in my listening rotation. There’s a dreamy quality that I don’t ever deny myself, with a sultry vocal and that lightly sparkling guitar note. For me, I think the song really takes off during the chorus, as the vocal comes across at it’s strongest and most emphatic. I appreciate that there’s no pressure in this song, no huge wall of tension I’m waiting to hear crash, just consistently pleasant vibes that I can’t escape. This song appears on the group’s new album, Big Sparks.

New Music from Popincourt

popincourtSome bands play by their own set of rules, pulling in a slew of influences that don’t necessarily resonate with the modern trends. But, in the case of Popincourt, brandishing such an approach sets one apart from their peers, allowing them to rise to the top of the game. For my two cents, there seems to be a part mod, part pub-rock nod on this new single, with a hint of traditional pop sensibility. The brevity of the song allows for maximized enjoyment from the get-go, and giving mixing credits to Ken Stringfellow never hurt anyone around these parts. The new album from the project is called A New Dimension to Modern Love, and it’s being released on May 27th via Jigsaw Records, so you know it has the ATH seal of approval.
