Something Playful from Craig Martinson

cragFeel like I went a little heavy on the rock side of things today, so I wanted to spin it around and offer something playful and captivating via Craig Martinson.  The songwriter has crafted a tune that’s akin to bands like White Rabbit or early Cold War Kids; the style brings with it huge hooks and a little bit of psychedelic funk to the mix.  It’s one of those songs that just makes you happy to be alive, so why not play it loud on this Friday afternoon.  You’ll find this tune on his latest EP, My Love Is True.

Playful Surf from Peach Kelli Pop

pkpFriday’s should be all about fun, especially when, like me, you’re about to go on a nice little Spring Break.  So, with that in mind, why not prep for it with some great feel-good tunes, like the latest single from Peach Kelli Pop. It’s playful through and through, which has always been the vibe from the act, in my mind anyways.  You get a little bit of surf, little garage and a helluva good time.  I expect nothing less from the forthcoming album from the band, III; it’s getting a Burger Records release on April 21st.

Say Hello to Petite League

10488368_817656524970061_2505200827898406327_nYou may or may not remember a post I made about a year ago featuring up and coming indie band Spark Alaska.  Since that time, founding member Lorenzo Cook has parted ways with his old project and created a new entity known as Petite League.  In comparison to the old work, the new project is less in the singer/songwriter vein and is a more focused, pop themed style.  While it is fairly simple and low on production quality, the driving chorus and slick little guitar licks throughout create a memorable basement pop experience.  Stay tuned as we get more information about a possible new EP in the works.

Really Enjoying This Tune from The Antics

anticzWhile some bands seem to try and shy away from their nostalgic nods, it seems that The Antics are fully embracing their look into the past of post-punk pop songwriting.  It sounds like they’re crafting something akin to the Servants or the Go Betweens, holding onto the pop sensibility of both bands, while still sounding remarkably refreshing.  This tune shows the licks the New Jersey boys are capable of constructing, which should have you pop fans sitting with watering mouths as the group readies their Emily Jones EP for our ears.

Another Catchy Kuzin Track

cuzOf all the press “quotes” that get my attention, I really only care about one: “recommended by Big Takeover.” It’s one of the few publications I actually still pay for, and typically I thumb through every page, ads and all.  They didn’t have to offer up this Kuzin tune in all reality, as I had already been turned onto the group, but that extra push encouraged me to post this little gem for you all on Friday.  In a world where pop music has to walk a fine line between saccharine and lo-fi aesthetics, I feel like Jessica Maros has gotten it all right.  Her songs have hooks, style and they have a knack for staying with you all day long. This here is the title track for her self-titled album, Cavity, which she’s releasing on March 3rd.

Los Angeles Police Department Return with Soft Pop

551494_904732099561401_6340773065914297492_nWe’re just about a week away from the February 24th release date of the new Los Angeles Police Department 7″, and so they’ve offered up another tune to get you in the mood for their dreamy pop tunes.  This tune has this great restraint, never pushing the envelope beyond the song’s capabilities, which in the end really allows for the group to hone in the track’s underlying melody.  Vocals are soft, and the drums never overwhelm, ending in this sprawling track of perfect pop blissfulness. Look for their release next week via Fat Possum Records.

Check Out Great Outdoors

greatThis new song from Great Outdoors just popped up yesterday, and I’m going to spend the next few weeks fawning over it.  There’s such a careful touch to everything the band does in this track, from the pacing to the guitar chords to the tribal percussive elements that open the tune.  You’ll find this song as one of the featured tunes on the band’s new album, Dads Oasis, which was just wrapped up in their native Australia. If you’ve got good things going on in life, they’re only going to get better with this 4.5 minute gem of a pop song.

Damn This Keath Mead Tune is Sweet

unnamed-2Ah, those old innocent days when a great pop tune made everything seem perfect.  This Keath Mead track is just such a tune, erasing the doldrums of every day life.  There’s some slick production that gives it a straight pop feeling, though I think Mead’s vocals have a nice touch to them that really brings this new single home.  It’s interesting that Keith’s imploring the song’s intended audience to “act your age,” which is completely the opposite of how this makes me feel.  I want to take off on a long sunny day walk with this song bouncing me along. His album Sunday Dinner comes out on February 24th via Company Records.

Enjoy This New Nic Hessler Tune

unnamed-4A few weeks ago I hit up a Nic Hessler tune, and I wasn’t entirely sold on it.  That’s until I got hooked on this new single, which made me realize how great Nic’s work could potentially be going forward.  It’s an example of perfect recording, starting the song off a bit slow, then waiting to explode in this huge swell of pop magic.  It’s surprising that more music ins’t being crafted in precisely this manner; it seems so simple (though I’m sure it’s not) and so easy, yet that’s precisely why I give Hessler credit, as I don’t think everyone can perfect it in such a manner. Look for Soft Connections in stories on March 17th via Captured Tracks.

Can’t Get Enough of Anthonie Tonnon

unnamed-3Pretty sure that this Anthonie Tonnon LP is going to be a secret hit in certain spheres of the world.  It’s like an elevated version of Jens Lekman, which I’m pretty sure everyone found endearing.  The production on his latest single is spot on, letting his voice take the lead, while still giving the instrumentation the proper impact.  This is the sort of pop music that makes me swoon; it’s warm and has this lofty melody that allows my heart to swoon like a giddy school kid. Look for Successor on March 3rd via Wild Kindness.
