Gran Moreno Premiere Hikuri Single

The brothers running the show in Austin’s Gran Moreno are here to continue bridging the gaps between psychedelia and mass audiences, as you’ll hear in their brand new single, “Hikuri.” This track operates with two sides of the storytelling coin, one operating with pop sensibility and hooks, while the other toys with smoky psychedelia and bombast. Initially, the toy with the listener, utilizing a catchy bluesy ballad to seduce the listener, riding on the power of the vocals, then unleashing a crashing psychedelic stomp through the speakers; they dive band and forth, back and forth, ultimately letting their primal urges take control as they embrace the fury! They’ll be dropping their El Sol LP this coming January, so keep your ears ready!

MoonKill Drop Murderhouse Video

Feel like there’s a lot of pomp around the Austin scene nowadays. Who’s the next big act? What will draw the big crowds or break out? Sometimes, I just want it gritty and done really well, like MoonKill. They’ve got a sound that aligns with a lot of the horror punk from its heyday, but there are also some sort of sludgy moments to the sound that give it a bit more interesting feel. The video below comes from their debut LP, and I love the opening guitar line, stabbing at the ears while feedback screeches around. Drums drop in, and the guitar dances more; the vocals come in, like they’re being transmitted from the surface of the moon, steady during the verses and growling when necessary. Some of those vocal moments are so emphatic that they create a little hook in the song, which is why I always come back to this brand of punk, as its got an edge but still feels fun. If you’re digging the sound, check out their Moonkill LP, which is available now!

Premiere: Lung – Clown Car Video

Here we are again with another rad tune from the confines of Cincinnati, forever reminding us that labels like Feel It Records are the backbone of the current scene; this time they’re letting us share a great new tune from the duo, Lung. The entirety of the new record began with roots in the tune below, giving birth to this mystical character named the Swankeeper, and while the mythology behind the character grew up here, I’d love it if we merely focused on the musical side for a minute. Sharp drum hits from Daisy Caplan burst into the tune within seconds, letting Kate Wakefield start to deliver her vocal work. Not a moment later, you’re greeted with this cacophony of discord, billowing with anxiety and putting you on edge; I still marvel that this much danger and noise comes from Wakefield’s manipulation of the cello. In a sense, it reminds me of Sleigh Bells, building minimalist hooks in this artistically refreshing way; you’ll want to be sure you order a copy by the time the Swankeeper hits on May 30th.

Premiere: Son of Buzzi Drops Heimweg, Mondlicht am Strassenrand

When music becomes more of a commodity, offering instant gratification, it loses a bit of its soul (yes, I know I’m also part of that cycle!), thus we need artists like Son of Buzzi who are willing to dig deep into the nature of songwriting and craft, purely for artistic purposes. Sebastian Bischoff’s project encompasses the ornate side of guitar history, bending and overlapping strings, then letting them melt into one another, embracing the “marriage of the impressionistic with the concrete.” The song below has these little trickles of beauty, caressing the ears with these vibrant little twists and turns, and then, even for a brief moment, the song seems to take off, grabbing pace for just a few seconds, expertly portraying the up and down movement of our lives. If you’re searching for depth in your listening experience today, click play below, then be sure to Ein Hase, Ein Phonix, Ein Schwan from Shrimper Records before the May 16th release date.

GBMystical Announces Wannabe + Shares Remember

You’re going to want to head over to your calendar and mark up May 2nd; it’s the day that GBMystical, the project of Terrin Munawet, drops the new Wannabe LP. We get to peek inside the record today with “Remember,” and my earliest sentiment is that it fills the space that Greg Mendez filled up recently, sort of a singer-songwriter that blossoms into full-pop maestro. When you press play below, there is a certain charm and self-awareness that you get from someone like Tony Molina, especially with a line like “I forget all my best ideas.” But, while that’s a pleasant entry to the song, the album’s sonic morphs come to fruition as this tune opens up into a bright bit of California style pop; it kind of feels like he’s channeling the Dead, yet maximizing melodic warmth like later Woods records do. This song sets the stage for an album that moves in and out of like-minded styles, rewarding in different ways each step you go. Expect this to sell out over and over again; Wannabe drops May 2nd, via Bee Side Cassettes.

Premiere: Smug Brothers Share New Single

Just because we are out here prepping for that thing going down next week, doesn’t mean the world of new music plans to stop for us. My jam(s) of the day comes by way of Columbus based outfit Smug Brothers and their new single “Take It Out On Me” with accompanying B-side “Constellation of Eight.” Both tracks offer a very throwback, DIY, sort of garage meets indie sound akin to something you might hear in the late 90s Sub Pop scene. Get your dancin’ shoes on for the A-side and then stick around for the B-side to be serenaded away.

These tracks are part of the new Smug Brothers album Stuck On Beta, which is due out on June 6th via Anyway Records.

Low Monroe Releases Deviant Hotline Video

While we admit to throwing certain generic modifiers into a lot of posts (unfairly so, occasionally), but as unfortunate as that can be, there’s no better way to turn you onto Low Monroe than by depicting them as the bastard child of Bauhaus and Joy Division. When listening to their new “Deviant Hotline” tune, you can hear the darkness, but like the aforementioned Manchester outfit, there’s a buoyancy to the shadows, particularly in the drive of the rhythm section. Guttural vocal tones give you that intoxicating stomach knot, built upon anxiety and primal desires, coating the tune in this ominous texture. You deserve post-punk like this. Go ahead, get lost in the darkened corners of this great jam.

Mt Fog Share Soft Center Video

If you’re looking for a true immersive album, might I suggest you indulge yourself by finding a quiet space, perhaps near a window, then turning on Mt. Fog‘s Ultraviolet Heart Machine. The record deals a lot with personal transformation, accepting the loss of self (whether that’s with a partner or one’s self); you’ll hear that nod in the refrain of “Soft Center,” offering the line “someone I don’t know.” Hold onto that as you watch the video directed by Clyde Petersen, who used lighting to isolate the band individually, then layering bits of the natural world atop instruments and backgrounds to tie the group to the natural world, which is always a thematic element in the group’s work. Musically, there’s this bubbling lifeforce, carefully crafted by the rhythmic section in the tune, allowing for Carolyn B.’s voice to shine and dance in the shadows of the tune. Brilliant track with a brilliant video fresh for your eyes! Grab one of the last copies of their LP while you can!

Boyracer Share Ode to Graeme Downes

If you don’t know Graeme Downes, well, I can’t help you there. But, maybe by turning on this new single from Boyracer you’ll be able to get the gist of why the songwriter is held in such high regard…enough to warrant an ode of sorts. Musically, the band have tuned down their energy here, and I mean that in the best way; they’re still manage to have an understated jangle and a sublime rhythm section, but it very much feels like Stew and company have embarked on the ballad route for their latest single. Riley throws in some velvety backing vocals throughout, maximizing the lure of the melodic tootsie roll at the center of the tune. Seaside Riot is out via Emotional Response this Friday!

Forceghost Ready Recycled Hearts EP + Share New Video

If you’re an avid fan of textural pop, then perhaps you might spend some time with us, listening to the great new single from Georgia’s Forceghost. They’ve got one EP in the books this year, with Recycled Hearts on its way to your ears this November. One listen through is simply not enough to really indulge in the layered constructs the group are pushing. Synthesized beats and glitches work to build this fuzzy background, punctuated by a sharp drum hit, all the while space age notes spin and bounce throughout. Still, you’ve got a fuzzy bit of guitar crafting the slightest edge that keeps the track from bounding off into absurdity…and all of it’s tethered by these velvety vocal notes built into the musical complex they’ve built around themselves. Risky and rewarding makes for some of the best underground pop. Recycled Hearts is out November 1st via Gift Fig Records.
