New Music from Basavriuk

When I first put on this single from Puerto Rico’s Basavriuk, the natural bounce was what drew me in; the jangle of guitar notes curling around wasn’t too shabby either, blending in seamlessly with my typical listening rotation. Then, the vocals pulled at me; they’re way down in the mix, almost as if they’re drowning beneath the melodic punch. I loved how they hid in there, careful to add another layer of brightness to the song’s spring, though done in a fashion that simultaneously hangs onto the dark tones of the guitars and washes of keyboard. A fun little pop ditty to get under your skin.

New Music from Faded Cassettes

There’s a brand of bedroom indiepop floating around there that has consistently found its way under my skin, and Puerto Rican artist Faded Cassettes is bringing that brand big time. You’ll hear a spritely guitar line, dancing and shimmering in the distance, akin to stuff like the early Drums records or maybe even a poppier brand of Blank Dogs, kind of circling around the pop edges of darkened post-punk. Sure, the energy is pushing a playful experience, but there’s something in the recording that keeps it a bit more intimate and personal, which is just my brand. Look for a debut album from the artist out on October 11th.

New Music From Shark Week

sharkweek_promo_webBack in November, I developed a man music crush on D.C. based Shark Week and their garage rock infused music.  Furthering my fandom of the group is this new song “Go West” that sort of infuses a doo wop vibe at the beginning before getting down and dirty with the familiar garage rock sound.  Anyone smart enough to see the band during SXSW, can attest that the sound translates really well in the live setting as well.  I’m expecting big things from these guys.

Make your way over to Analog Edition to pre-order a new 7″ from Shark Week due out July 30th.

Great New Lo-Fi from Fantasmes

I haven’t really been able to find some super punk rock lately, so I’ve been delving into some weird lo-fi tunes left and right.  My latest discovery, via some secret special friends, comes to us by way of Puerto Rico/NYC outfit Fantasmes.  Their latest effort Redness Moon just came out today, and this title track is something I’ve been obsessing over.  Whether it’s the brooding music or the way the lyrics casually glide over it all doesn’t matter, but what matters is that I’m just going to play this song on repeat.  I can see some psychedelic links too, so that should appease friends looking to drop out.  Regardless, it’s interesting, so give it a go.
