I know Spotify is the devil, so please pass judgment knowing that I know it’s the devil, but I can’t turn my back on the beast…not to mention, the ease of access for everyone, which is where Spotify dominates the market. Alas, yes, I’m using Spotify for my playlist…until Bancamp offers me something better, but even they can’t be trusted anymore! So, I’ll just wrap up last week on my one! ATH Wrapped! We covered a lot of music, with some heavy-hitters like Real Estate, JAMC and Ducks Ltd. popping off with new stuff. There was a ton of tuneage from Australia: Pop Filter, Sachet, The Brights, Alluvial Nuggets and Good Morning. Plus, I’m flipping a coin between the Umbrellas and Bolis Pupul for my fave track of the week. What’s yours? Find out below!

Redbud Share Kin Video

Redbud has spent some time this year working on creating really stellar videos for their most recent releases; today they’re out to share a new one for “Kin,” which has appeared in various versions on their last two EPs. This track’s all about the joys of friends, as portrayed by the picnicking foursome in the park; the park and the band also playfully engage with nature throughout, which is another underlying theme of the tune. Musically, it’s a light indiepop shuffle, working somewhere between bossanova and ethereal pop; they employ lots of textured vocals too, adding depth to the melodic underbelly. And, if you’re in the Austin area, they’ll be on board to celebrate Howdy Gals Anniversary at Mohawk on December 15th.

I felt like I let you down last week, having only really covered about 17 new songs, but in that, we tried to make sure there were some burners in there that would get you excited. What better way to start off this week’s recap than bringing you the world’s best power pop outfit, The High Water Marks and their new single. We got a new RVG tune, which is never a bad place to be, plus Beach Fossils continued to show their growth on the new LP. And, it wouldn’t be us if there was no Austin contingent, so we ran an acoustic session from Redbud, plus the latest from Dress Warm. Take a listen.

Redbud Share Acoustic Version of Summer Moon

In a little over a week, Austin group Redbud will pack up as a duo and hit up a few shows in New York and Philly (they’ll be joined by friends for full band sets in NYC) during the second week of May. In order to entice folks, and remind everyone about the talents exhibited on their recent Long Night EP, they’ve shared an acoustic version of “Summer Moon” for all to enjoy. The band version of the EP steps the sound up, appropriately, adding these textures that give buoyancy to Katie Claghorn’s songwriting. But, the acoustic version, as you’ll see, has this powerful intimacy, due to both the proximity of the video’s film, but also the gentle strum and Claghorn’s facial expressions; you’re likely to get a similar experience if you catch them life. So, if you’re in the NYC/Philly area the second week of May, stop by. Plus, the group will be moving about Texas the following week!

Redbud Release To the Moon Video

Another day and another new Austin voice to turn my attention towards. Redbud, an act that wasn’t yet on my radar, dropped this wonderful tune Friday via Porchfire Records. The song’s a touch on the brief side, but the group tries to maximize that time with the striking voice of Katie Claghorn; as soon as it drops in around that guitar line you can feel yourself entering a dream state, lost in your thoughts. I like the detailed quality of the guitar, but when it hits the 1 minute mark, it has this resonation that really sealed the deal for me, as far as just loving a good sound. Trust me, if you’ve got 2 minutes to spare, this is where its at!
