Sonny and the Sunsets Share Androids Single

The opening thirty or so seconds of this new tune from Sonny & the Sunsets immediately had me hooked; I honestly let my mind drift to the Aussie scene a bit, as it has this heavy yearning attached to the jungle. When Sonny comes in, aided by softened backing vocals, the track begins to build on that vibe, adding a melodic resonance to it. At times, the tickling of the guitar strings hits exactly, doing a little playful jin inside your ear; it always feels like coming home, like “it’s alright.” Self Awareness Through Macrame is out on September 1st via Rocks in Your Head.

Sonny and the Sunsets Announce Self Awareness Through Macrame

Another bit of great news from one of my favorite songwriters, Sonny Smith. Sonny wrote a majority of the songs, like the one below during the pandemic, then went back and added in friends and touches to make it a proper Sonny and the Sunsets record. I love the light-hearted guitar jangle that bounces throughout this tune, giving off a ray of sunshine and bounce that’s immediately accessible to any old pop fan. Plus, you get some great organ work that adds an extra textural layer of depth to the song, building in extra bits of charm. Self Awareness Through Macrame will be out on September 1st via Rocks In Your Head Records.

Sonny & the Sunsets Share Palm Reader Video

I took one of those rarefied family vacations, heading to the beach this last week, so I wasn’t able to properly wrap up last week, where I most certainly would have shared the latest video from Sonny & the Sunsets. This is one of my favorite tracks on New Day with New Possibilities (which also dropped while I was tanning), hitting home because of the intermingling of sliding guitar lines and the sunny pop vibes that are always present in a Sonny Smith release; you might have heard a non-country version on Antenna to the Afterworld, so this gives you a different glance at Smith’s writing process of late. The new LP is out now via Rocks in Your Head Records.

Galore Drop Cucaracha Video

As a kid, I remember being in love with the sound of punk and grunge upon my introduction to it all; it felt like something I could do, something that was attainable (the sound/not stardom). Somewhere, sitting in their bedroom right now is a similar kid, waiting for that same door to open, that same sound; please play them this song from Galore. The band’s guitar sound has this sharp angular stabs and guitar riffs, which can come across as frantic at times, matching up with the vocal howls. When the whole group joins in on the vocals, this is what rock n’ roll should feel like, to me anyways; it has this rapturous joy, even when the tone seems harsh. Everything about this song, from the music itself to the video makes you want to be part of the fun; makes you want to start a band, makes you want to be part of something bigger than yourself…that’s what rock n’ roll should be. If you dig it, look for their self titled album on June 1st via Rocks in Your Head Records.
