Sun June Announce Somewhere LP

With the release of “Singing” last month, we all knew Sun June had something cooking; today they officially announce the release of their new LP, Somewhere, handled by Run for Cover and Keeled Scales. For me, I’m not sure what’s more striking at this point…the song or its accompanying video. I love the use of light and shadow in the video, directed by the band’s own Laura and Stephen, but damned if the song doesn’t blow the rest of the musical competitors out of the water. The song, trickles in around forlorn notes and Colwell’s solemn delivery; you’re almost oblivious to the subtle tension building, bursting through near the 2:50 mark to deliver an emphatic sonic euphoria that solidifies the song’s greatness. The LP will be out in February of next year!

Sun June Sign with Run for Cover Records and Share Single

Austin’s Sun June probably need no introduction out there, but rest assured, they’re one of the best exports we’ve had in our fair city in a good bit. Today we get news that they’re signing on to work with Run for Cover Records (they’ll still work with Keeled Scales too!) for their next album, slated for release in 2021. They’ve made said announcement with a new single, and a video featuring their local ATX neighborhood. It’s hard not to be mesmerized by Colwell’s voice in this one, with this powerful softness that exudes confidence. Behind her, the band work on creating this delicate space, perfecting notes that hang in a Hill Country landscape. Simply put, this song feels like home. Look for more from the band as we try to escape 2020.

Young Guv Offers She’s a Fantasy

It seems Young Guv is going to continue his shapeshifting ways on Guv II, as he shares another track from his forthcoming album. It’s interesting, as there’s this sort of soft power-pop vibe stomp that circles back and back again, but the it’s been the harmonies in the song that have really drawn me into the track. Honestly, I can’t help but hear touches of the Grateful Dead when they weren’t jamming lurking in this tune, only furthered by some of the “everything and the kitchen sink” work going on in the song’s latter half. Looking forward to seeing how this all ties together when Guv II drops next week via Run for Cover Records.

Young Guv Shares Caught Lookin

It seems at this point that Young Guv can sort of do what he wants, and deservedly so I’d say. Today, he dropped a tune that’s quite a digression from the first single off the forthcoming Guv II, his follow up to Guv I, which was released earlier this year. Sure, there’s some interesting guitar work, but it definitely takes a back seek to the sleek slow dance grooves of this new tune; I mean, there’s a sexy sax solo lurking right there in the middle of the song. I love that it gives a completely difference glimpse at what’s inside of the artist here; we can’t all rock day in and day out. Guv II is out on October 25th via Run for Cover.

Young Guv Announces Guv II

Guv I has barely stopped spinning on the turntable and already Young Guv is back with Guv II, the second in his Guv series of LPs. Today we get to drop that first single, and man, its a doozy. I immediately think of all the fuzzy power-pop I’ve been jamming to for these past many years; I definitely jumped right to a Teenage Fanclub reference in my brain here, though there’s a hint more swagger. I love the melodic pop breakdown at the 1 minute mark too, adding that sugary-sweetness that ingrains tunes in your head. This record seems like its going to be nothing but hook-filled guitar pop hits, so jump on board to make rock n’ roll fun again. Guv II will be handled by Run for Cover Records, dropping October 25th.

Young Guv Shares Patterns Prevail

Ben Cook’s been rocking Young Guv tunes on the side of all his other projects (Fucked Up/No Warnings) for quite some time, and this year he’s made the jump to Run for Cover Records. His new record sounds like what we’ve come to expect, albeit with a little more power behind it; this new single steps write into that mold immediately. As soon as things kick off, those guitars burst in, rattling your speakers, with the slightest hint of pop sensibility. His voice here sounds a lot like Elliott Smith penning an ode to Teenage Fanclub…which is a huge compliment in my book. Guv I comes out on August 2nd.

Field Medic Shares Used 2 Be a Romantic

There’s something about Field Medic that seems so familiar, like a friend playing me his story as we drink beers in apartment. That’s the sort of singer-songwriter vibe I always appreciate; it’s the personal, the empathy from shared experiences that makes you long for days gone long ago. The sound is pretty bare bones, mostly with strummed guitar and some lush arrangement; reminds me of Limbeck (did I just date myself?). Oh, and be sure to stick around for the last line; it’s an important one coming into SXSW…and any other time of the year. Fade into the Dawn comes out on April 19th via Run for Cover Records.

Never a Bad Time for Pity Sex

psThe title of this post is in reference to the band, weirdoes. While Pity Sexhas been on our radar for some time, they seem to be making quite a name for themselves, especially now that they’re working with Run For Cover Records. I think the intensity of the music falls in line with a lot of the modern guitar pop, while the soft quality of the vocals portrays the band’s different dynamic, at least in contrast to many of their peers. Their new effort White Hot Moon is being released by the label on April 29th, so stream the song below to see if it’s up your alley.

Camera Shy Give You Slighty Hazy Dream Pop

unnamedCamera Shy is comprised of Nick Bassett and Alexandra Morte, both of which you may know from Whirr. Together, they’ve joined forces to put their effort into this new dream pop project, which is filled with bright and clean guitar hooks and the vocals of Morte that are just a touch haze to them to give the sound a bit of depth. The track below, “Colors Radiate,” is the perfect example of a sunny dream pop song, but at the same time it’s not overdone or cliched. On the contrary, this brief track will have you swooning over the simplicity and lushness from such a straightforward pop song. Camera Shy‘s debut self titled LP is out July 14th via Run For Cover Records. Preorder it here.
