Music for Listeners Announce 25th Anniversary Shows

If you ever make it to Austin during the SXSW season, you’ve likely been to a set or played a set at the wonderful Music for Listeners day parties. Michael and Orlando have exceptional taste, quite closely aligned to our own, and they work really hard throughout the year to promote their favorite new and old music on their radio show based out of San Antonio; you can stream a lot of their sets HERE. First, congrats to the two of them for 25 years of rocking their radio show; that’s just a magnificent feat in any arena. Second, they’ve announced two really great 25th anniversary shows, one which will feature Voxtrot playing a set of their original 3 EPS, with Blushing and Buttercup opening. The second set will have a more country leaning attitude with Cactus Lee, Native Harrow and Sentimental Family Band taking over. First show is September 14th at Laurie Auditorium and second is on October 5th at Lonesome Rose. And why not celebrate by sharing a new video from Voxtrot! Congrats Michael and Orlando!

Faulty Cognitions Share Fresh Single

As an avid Dirtnap Records fan, Chris Mason and his old band Low Culture were certainly an act I was familiar with, and even have an LP in the catalog. Now, however, Chris has moved to San Antonio where he’s fronting Faulty Cognitions, a brand new act. Mason has a pretty distinctive voice and style, so you’re getting a mixture of punk and classic rock n’ roll thrown at you with a DIY ethos. And maybe it’s just me, but there’s something in the guitars that feels like it bleeds Texas, though that could just be me. Love the gang vocals that get employed too, bulking up the sound into one riotous burst of rock. You can find this song on their new LP, Somehow, Here We Are, out this Friday. Plus, if you’re in the Austin area, the band play at the Parish on April 16th! A week from today!

Who Was Watching Share New Single

I’ve got a long history with pop punk/power-pop, but stoked to find some sweet pop punk licks close to home, just a few hundred or so miles down the road in San Antonio with Who Was Watching. Andrew Elizalde mentions Tony Molina as one of his influences, and that’s fitting as both artists share personal stories and give them vital meaning by providing these huge hooks that stay with the listener long after their quick bursts of pop. I love the nice balance added throughout this tune with the female backing vocal…definitely my kind of harmony. The debut EP from the project drops today!

El Campo Release Bend and Color

Sometimes you make mistakes, and I made one letting this El Campo release sit in my inbox for a few days because I just can’t stop playing it. Perhaps the most impressive thing about this new Bend and Color EP is that it takes the band’s folk/country stylings and expands, like “Deceiver,” which seems to look towards sunny California for sonic influences. Don’t fret longtime fans, as the band still holds true to who they’ve always been…just listen to the opener “Exitos Mixtos” or “Pink Bubble.” It’s good to see growth, but always just as great to hear really good songs from bands you love. It’s available now from the group’s BANDCAMP.

New Single and Video From The Rich Hands

374375_590472457642909_1132971821_nSan Antonio based The Rich Hands came onto our radar just about a year ago and we’ve done our best to support them ever since.  Today the band have two bits of news for their fan base that we’re excited to share with you guys.  The first is a new video for their latest single called “I Get By” which features the guys out on the road, playing shows, and having a general good time of it.  Of course that garage rock sound with some fun pop elements thrown in is still there and is as great as ever.  Once you’ve watched that a few times, check out some upcoming tour dates for the band so you crazy kids can see them on the road.  Follow the jump for both video and tour dates.

Anthem Ready Rock From The Hawks (of Holy Rosary)

Hawks-Group-RGB-copyThough San Antonio wasn’t always considered a hot bed for up and coming indie acts, it seems that recent years have bucked that trend.  The Hawks (of Holy Rosary) hail from the city and are creating some very interesting throwback style poppy-punk tunes in their very own way.  Our very first exposure to the band comes in the form of this track called “Snakes and Hawks” and one can immediately see why folks are buzzing about this band.  The multiple harmonies and chant worthy chorus are infectious as hell.  Welcome to the party kids.

New album, What Team am I On?, is due out July 22nd via Texas is Funny Records.

Have Fun With The Rich Hands

We’ve been hyping up local San Antonio boys The Rich Hands for awhile now and we’re excited to call these almost locals ATH approved.  You may have heard their style before, but I think the guys are providing a fresh take on the indie-pop genre.  Expect quick, guitar driven songs complete with short and catchy choruses to make music in your ears.  I can’t find any reason not to like this.

New album, Out of My Head, is due out May 6th on Burger Records/Fountain Records.  Also, check our SXSW interview from the band elsewhere on the site.

richhands“Have never checked that out but seems like it would be pretty cool!” Yo, this is what I’m talking about! SXSW Interviews.  This is one of the great things about SXSW; you get to discover brand new bands to love and adore. Perhaps one of those bands will be the Rich Hands, the Texas trio who seem to be working as hard as they can to get as many dates lined up for you as possible during the week. They have at least seven shows, so check out what they had to say, and try to hunt them down during the festival (their tour dates are at the bottom). Read more
