Chime School Announce Debut Album

This site has paid tribute to the work of Andy Pastalaniec with his work in various projects from Cruel Summer to Seablite, but now Andy’s earning his own stripes with his project, Chime School. This last week Slumberland announced they’d be working with Andy on his debut LP, which at this point, sounds like a fun-filled collection of indiepop ditties. There’s plenty of jangling going on in this lead single, though I’ll admit that the vocals actually feel like they might fit right into a 90s alternative pop playlist; there’s just something about the nostalgic warmth there that sets Chime School outside the modern fare…I love the clarity in those notes for sure. I mean, it’s a band from San Francisco, which is so hot right now, musically speaking. It’s also a band on Slumberland, so you get reliability. And, the tune rules, so pre-order the eponymous debut!

Seablite Share Another Song from High Rise Mannequins

Don’t act like we haven’t been hyping up Seablite over the last year or so, and don’t act surprised when I throw another tune your way from the group! I love the latest recording; the band’s trademark fuzz is buried really deep here; still feels like your speakers are broken, but allows for the diamond to come out of the rough. And, boy, does it ever! The vocals come and rise to this sort of crystalline pinnacle, shining at the top of the cymbal crashes and rolling fuzz from beneath. They’re just keeping at the great tunes here. Look for High Rise Mannequins via Meritorio Records and Emotional Response on February 21st.

By now, you’re surely aware that I’m an avowed Seablite fan, so as another tune pops up, of course it’s going to make the pages here. This one’s got these sharp little guitar chords that jangle and hang in the front of the song during the verses, setting up the chorus to deliver a noisy wall of fuzz that blows your hair straight back. Throughout, the band walk that narrow tightrope between noise rock and bubblegum pop; you get the best of all your favorite genres in one delicious little pop nugget. You can grab the new High Rise Mannequins EP from Emotional Response, out on February 21st.

Seablite Announce Brand New EP

Last year was a really big year for Seablite; their album Grass Stains and Novocaine broke through a crowded landscape to find its way onto Good Morning America’s Top 50 LPs of 2019. Still, they’re not resting on those successes, returning with a brand new 10″ EP for Emotional Response. Kicking in with a trademark bit of fuzz, the song jumps right in with a jangling buzz and shimmy, giving you some noise that will let you tap your toes too! The vocals are really gentle, almost just riding out the edge of the feedback; I think the chorus is really really special, building on the natural warmth and pushing it further by curling the notes around little guitar stabs. This band is on an incredible roll, so be sure to get acquainted with them now. High Rise Mannequins will be out on February 21st.

The Year in Indiepop…According to Nathan

As we’re all looking back on the year 2019, I tend to gravitate towards lists with little agenda, other than to shine a light back on the year in the areas I adore. For one, the indiepop scene. Now, there’s always a great big debate about what indie pop is, so for all intents and purposes, I admit that I just don’t care, so the genre’s purists can yell at me later. Now, this may read as a best of, but merely this is the stuff that stuck out in my brain, so if I missed something, I love you and I’m sorry. Honestly, it just gave me a chance to make a fun playlist (2+ hours!) full of hits for all you pop fans.

It’s super-hard to really nail down your favorite albums, especially when its only July and the whole thing seems pretty arbitrary, to put it lightly. But, like all your favorite sites, hits matter; they make you feel cool. So, I have concocted my own list of the Best Albums of 2019…so far. More New Seablite

Grass Stains and Novocaine is high upon my listening rotation these last few weeks, and as the band keep dropping singles, I’m going to keep encouraging you to visit listen. Their latest single is this fuzzy pop number where the guitar just grinds out like a buzzsaw. Sounds frightening, but the rhythm section keeps a natural melody to the tune, allowing for the vocals to ride on the back of of it all like a nice little pop breeze blowing through your bedroom window. It’s short and sweet and begging for you to press repeat, so go ahead now, listen again and again. Seablite will drop the LP on June 7th via Emotional Response Records.

Did You See That Seablite Video?

Last week I shared another track from the forthcoming Seablite LP along with news of the Pre-Order, but just a day later they dropped another tune and this video. I had to wait a bit to post it because I know you guys are fickle, and need some Seablite space…but now I’m ready to get back at it. This track pulls away from the jangling pop side of things and moves into the shimmering realm of dream pop. I think the rhythm section still holds things really tight, propelling the tune forward while the guitars seem to swirl and dip in and out of your ear holes. I love how you can sort of tie the album title into the two sides of the band, with their jangling leaning towards the more playful “Grass Stains” and this track here bending towards “Novocaine.” Grass Stains and Novocaine is out June 7th via Emotional Response.

Seablite aren’t strangers to this site, but it had been a minute since we’d heard the name until our friend pointed out that their new album is now up for pre-order! And, it’s possible I’ve completely missed this, but there’s this bubbling pop number that comes with that announcement. Opening up with those ringing jangle guitars is a sure-fire way to catch my attention, especially when the rhythm section kicks in a toe-tapping bounce. Vocals are hitting just the right note, aided by these delighting backing notes, purifying the harmony. Some fuzz kicks in around the 2 minute mark, just in case you weren’t aware of the band’s ability to rock…which I’m pretty sure ties into the album title, Grass Stains and Novocaine…you can get down and dirty and still be really sweet; it’s out June 7th via Emotional Response.

Seablite Rulz with New Single

Our friends over at Emotional Response Records snuck in a few gems into their latest compilation, a collection which culls 2018 and 2019 releases together…but I’ve been drawn to this new jam from San Fran’s Seablite. The band released a stellar EP in 2017, and this has them ushering in that special blend of bouncing pop music that can only make your day 100 times better. It opens with these sharp little guitar stabs, then a punctuated drum beat and we’re off to super rad fun times. The vocals are really soft and dreamy, helping spin the listener about in their bedroom. It’s Tuesday, and this is my absolutely favorite track of the week. Look for Grass Stains and Novocaine in May of this year.
