Abby Gogo to Reissue Self-Titled LP via Double Phantom

Atlanta’s Abby Gogo always seemed to operate outside of everyone’s expectations. During their hey-day in the late 2000s, they’d drop a 7″ here, tour a little bit, get a record out, tour a slight bit more (including SXSW)…then they broke up. It’s kind of unfortunate, as their sound seems right in line with where we’re at with those true worshippers of psych influences (not the Tame Impala breed). But, worry no more! They’re going to reissue their debut self-titled LP. Interestingly, the record’s lead track seems to combine all the elements of cool, which is what I’ve got for you below. The guitars shatter and cascade into a messy crash through your speakers, fueled by this shaky madness that seems on the verge of losing control. Flip it onto the vocals and you get this more J. Spaceman vibe, offering up this supremely indifferent layer of cool that begs you to ignore the rest of the world and dive into Abby Gogo. Double Phantom will be reissuing the LP at the end of May.

Florist Announce Self-Title LP

I’ve been a fan of Emily Sprague’s Florist project for sometime, though admittedly, I’ve gravitated towards certain tracks more than others. But, today, the project announces a new self-titled LP, and with it comes this meditative single that’s got me all up in the feelings. It circles around this ornate little guitar picking and Sprague’s vocals, with little rumblings rising to the surface from time to time; it’s like listening to your favorite record just to hear the crackles through your speakers. I just imagine this tune playing on the car stereo as we cruise down a stretch of empty highway in the Fall, dreamily gazing out the window as the colors swirl into this blur of emotion. The self-titled LP will be out on July 29th via Double Double Whammy.

Central Heat Exchange Share Cold Video

Earlier this year Central Heat Exchange released their self-titled album, and it definitely was something I spent a lot of time with over the last few months (though Santi never gave me a copy!). Today, on Bandcamp Friday, you should go grab it for yourself, and in order to entice you, we’ve got this great visual to accompany one of the record’s standout tunes, “Cold.” This is one of the tracks that I loved the most, exhibiting that unique balance between what seems noisy, yet still has the ability to soothe. Part of that has to do it with the way the group texture the vocals, but its also just the perfect mix that captures a band of accomplished songwriters working to bring the best out of one another. Self-titled album available now through Birthday Cake/Sunroom/Citrus City.

 

Partner Look Announce Debut LP

We first brought you news of Partner Look last April, when the band dropped a quick 7″ after forming as kind of a spur of the moment projects between the Hasnain sisters and their partners, Lachlan Denton and Dainis Lacey. This is one of the unique things about the Melbourne scene right now, with friends trading places all over to create exciting new projects. Today, the band announce their debut self-titled LP, dropping via Trouble in Mind/Osborne Again/Spunk in February. Lachlan (of Pop Filter/LD + ER/Ocean Party) gets the lead on the vocals here, and his voice always has this familiarity and spirited vibrance; it adds to the bouncing rhythm section helmed by his drum work. There’s a little bit of twang in the guitars, sort of taking a kind of psychedelic folk boogie to the track that reaches its climax in the chorus when everyone joins in for a singalong. Try this one on for size.

Chime School Share Wait Your Turn Video

Thursday feels like a good day to visit a Slumberland release, so why not begin with a band on the meteoric rise in the jangling pop realm, Chime School. So far, the singles from Andy Pastalaniec’s project are perfectly defined, but I feel like this is one where you really get the feeling that this could just be the beginning of something huge. There’s little bits of layering in this that sort of walk a fine line between nostalgic 70s 12-string guitar ballads and the hazy underbelly of early 90s Britpop, though spinning that kaleidoscope still hints at the purity of classic indiepop. No matter which way you spin Andy’s songs, it’s like unwrapping a gift individually wrapped for each listener’s experience. Chime School is out on November 5th.

Guess I’m reveling in the joys of pop music today, which I don’t mind one bit. This new Chime School video is another charmer from Andy Pastalaniec, fueled by these thumping drum snaps and churning jangles. I love that despite the song’s brief nature that things still seem fully developed, and even included several distinct moments that stand out from the jangles, like the classic sunny guitar solo in the early moments or the emphatic punch that comes in the song’s stomp about just after the minute mark; it’s not always easy to pack all those great moments into a song running under 2 minutes, but sure enough, its executed perfectly. The self-titled LP is due November 5th courtesy of Slumberland.

Chime School Announce Debut Album

This site has paid tribute to the work of Andy Pastalaniec with his work in various projects from Cruel Summer to Seablite, but now Andy’s earning his own stripes with his project, Chime School. This last week Slumberland announced they’d be working with Andy on his debut LP, which at this point, sounds like a fun-filled collection of indiepop ditties. There’s plenty of jangling going on in this lead single, though I’ll admit that the vocals actually feel like they might fit right into a 90s alternative pop playlist; there’s just something about the nostalgic warmth there that sets Chime School outside the modern fare…I love the clarity in those notes for sure. I mean, it’s a band from San Francisco, which is so hot right now, musically speaking. It’s also a band on Slumberland, so you get reliability. And, the tune rules, so pre-order the eponymous debut!

Fortitude Valley Drop All Haill the Great Destroyer Video

Probably going to be the last post I get up today, because, well, five songs seems like enough for you. Don’t get greedy. Figured I’d go out with a banger, which is absolutely what this new Fortitude Valley single brings to your ears. I love those distorted guitars, flirting with me by offering this understated little jangle and a little bit of pop rock swagger; it doesn’t hurt you get that scorching solo in the song’s middle. Laura’s voice always makes me think Toni Basil for some reason, which gives me a wee chuckle and only solidifies the endearing factor FV bring to the table with each new single. Their debut self titled LP drops this October via Fika Recordings.

Petite Amie Announce Self-Titled Debut LP

Here’s a new band to put on your radar: Petite Amie. The Mexican band is brandishing this late night explorative pop, bordering somewhere between sublimely chill and French dreaminess…both are good. This song’s got this subtle little dance floor groove, that little shoulder shimmy as you spin about the dance floor, and that alone sets you in the mood to let your body smile as you listen through. Aline Terrein has these pseudo-disco vocal notes, like some late night DJ serenading you deep into the morning hours as you tap your toes and bob your head. The band will be releasing their self-titled debut via Devil in the Woods/Park the Van on October 1st.

XOR Share Final Single from Self-Titled Debut

XOR is the solo project of Secret Shame bassist Matthew, and next week he’ll be releasing his debut solo record. For the last single before the release, it seems he’s aiming to hit right at the heart with the catchiest tune on the release. At times, the warmth of his vocals lines up with the synth work he’s crafted, melodically seducing the listener with these synthesized harmonies. If you’ve been caught up in the work of Black Marble or Soviet, or hey, maybe you like the last few New Order records, then you’re going to find yourself pressing repeat on this tune for a long time to come. Look for XOR next Friday!
