Sort of bored with the tunes coming my way this week, but what I’m not bored of is the diverse listen that is this debut LP from Rays. We’ve written about the band many times on the site, and there’s no reason to stop right now, is there? There’s all sorts of stuff hanging out on this LP, be it jangling guitars or psychedelic swirls, all spun with the perfect attitude. You get bonus points when you can switch between male and female vocalists, never losing a beat. Get your hands on this new LP Friday when it hits via Trouble in Mind Records.

Premiere: Mountain Movers to Release New LP

There’s sprawling rock for self-indulgence, and then there’s Mountain Movers. The New Haven band has just announced they’ll be releasing their new self-titled album via Trouble in Mind Records. This brand new single is a 7 minute opus, stretched out over little psychedelic jams and nonchalant vocal delivery. It’s a crazy beautiful world where the likes of Sonic Youth and Spiritualized are hanging out, trying to deconstruct the modern psych tropes. Dan Greene, the song’s guitarist and vocalist, says the song is about “trouble-makers who follow their vision into unknown world despite the dangers ahead.” My ears welcome that journey into the “unknown world,” awaiting more expansive tunes to open my mind. Brand New Ty Segall

Ty Segall will be releasing his new record in just a few weeks, and now we’ve got another tune to offer up to listeners, “Break a Guitar.” While the actual guitar still has that powerful glam rock to it, I think Ty’s voice here is the first time I really see him going full Bolan. It’s a really nice touch, as I think with he’s bordered on repeating himself over the last few years. Don’t you worry though, there’s still a huge soloing moment in the middle of the tune, which could very well lead to Segall breaking his guitar in the live setting. Clearly he’s still going strong…look for his new self-titled effort via Drag City on January 27th.

You’ve Gotta Listen to Rays

Man…in a week where I’ve been struggling to find anything I love, it’s great that Trouble in Mind Records just posted the announcement of this new Rays LP. Those of you who adored the the early work of Parquet Courts will surely find the band brandishing a similar post-punk fashion…though these guys sound a bit darker, less art(y). They band out the latter half of the track by filling it with a propulsive noise that’s tied back into the main vein of the song. You can always count on TiM bringing you a solid band and a solid record; look for this self-titled LP on March 31st.

Ty Segall Changes Direction with New Single

tysegall05If you caught Ty Segall playing a few acoustic sets last year, then perhaps you were aware at just how powerful his music can be, even when it’s stripped down. That’s what you’re going to get on this latest track, even with a backing band; this is perhaps the most ballad-driven tune he’s written in some time, and I welcome that. I bet someone out there is even thinking its got hints of Bowie, but I’m just appreciative that he’s tossing out a little variation. Not sure how long-lived this approach will be, as press release claims a whole bunch of neck work, but for now, his new self-titled album has my interest; it comes out on January 27th via Drag City.

I Blew It: Dean Wells New Project, The Astounds

astoundsDean Wells writes jams. He wrote jams as Capstan Shafts and Rare High, among others, but now he’s working under the name, The Astounds. The group quietly released their self-titled LP earlier this year and I completely had no idea! But, now that I’ve found it, and see it’s streaming, I’m going to play the shit out of it all day long…I hope you do. It combines bits of lo-fi with classic guitar pop, and always leaves you with memorable hooks you won’t be able to pull away from. Seems like the perfect way to spend this Hump Day…join me?

Short Blast of Brilliance from DD Owen

ddowenIn under a matter of minutes the new DD Owen tune accomplishes more than many of the other songs you’ll hear today, or shit, even this year. It’s an infectious little ditty filled with self-deprecation, but enough punk attitudeto let all your friends know just how cool you are.Unlike many of Owen’s rock n’ roll peers, perhaps what stands out to me the most in my twelve repeated listensis how huge the song sounds…sometimes the value of a recording makes the cream rise to the top, which is where this song is staying. Look for the self-titled DD Owen album on September 30th via 12XU.

I’d Like You to Meet Your Death

meetyourdeathOpened up our early day with a lot of the soft stuff, which I love, but man, I want you to listen to this new track from Meet Your Death. The group, composed of some heavy hitters around the Austin area, are playing this bluesy bit of garage rock, or rather, let’s just call it rock n’ roll. There’s a bit of boogie in it, and the lyrics are delivered in a matter of fact manner…and lets not forget that squawking harmonica blasting through. There’s a lot of imitators out there nowadays, so here’s hoping someone imitates this! Look for the band’s new self-titled LP next month from 12XU.

The Hecks Ready Debut

theheckThis is likely to be my last post about any Trouble In Mind band…at least for this week. But, in saying that, this is just another reason the label has been so consistent lately. They’ve signed on Chicago’s The Hecks for the band’s debut, and you’re not likely to hear much like it, though you’ll hear similarities across the board of the latest indie rock fare. Guitars open dangerously, yet steadied by a polite bit of pop sensibility just underneath. Then they take a turn into the realms of art-punk, just before another right turn takes them into the realm of dissonant noise…closing the track abruptly. It’s a fascinating collection of all things punk and rock, leaving listeners salivating at what’s to come on their debut; the self-titled record is released on September 2nd.

New Album + Music from Japancakes

IMG_0001-2It’s been nearly 9 years since we last heard from Japancakes, and there couldn’t be a better way for the band to reintroduce themselves than through this new synth driven track off their new LP. Those who’ve followed the band might notice something slightly different…the inclusion of vocals…the first time the band have used such an approach in 20 years. But, Carrie Clough hits the perfect notes, especially around the 1.43 minute mark; it soars highly before allowing for the electronic pulse to bounce back into your ears. Backing vocals get added to the rear-end of the song, emphasizing the majestic pop the band have left you with on this tune. Their self-titled release will be out on May 6th.
