Henrik Appel Offers Nothing to Lose

Already being a fan of Henrik Appel won’t set you up for his powerful new ballad; it’s something wholly enchanting, of the sort that you let close down your night. There’s also this sense of grandeur in the craft, using a huge piano track and Appel’s cooled delivery to create this intimate bravado. At times, it feels like a B-side on a Rolling Stones record, easily slipping into a more subtle format that highlights the elegant craft Henrik’s pulled off this go round. Really looking forward to spending a few hours with Shadows; the record drops on November 1st via PNKSLM.

Henrik Appel Shares New Single

Having followed Henrik Appel for some time, it’s really interesting listening to his musical transformation over the years; he’s moved from garage rock purveyor to an admirable elevator of pop rock. Now, I can’t quite vouch for the lyrical work here, but there’s certainly something in the overall feel that resonates here at my house, something that maybe recalls Lou Reed working on his own, like going for your own walk on the wild side. I love the little jazz inflections that feed into the natural ebbs and flows, giving this song a depth that goes beyond mere indie rock kitsch. Looking forward to Shadows, out November 1st via PNKSLM.

Henrik Appel Announces Shadows LP

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve heard from Stockholm’s Henrik Appel, as his last album dropped all the way back in 2021! Today, he returns with a brand new single and a brand new album announcement. Shadows is the name of the record, and I’m definitely cranking up the vibes here, as it takes some of Appel’s garage rock past and channels it through the ghost of Lou Reed; he carries that same disaffected swagger in his vocal delivery while the guitar work walks him down the road. He even twists it into a spoken cool when the chorus and sax unite to offer a little respite. Stoked to hear more from the album; it’ll drop via PNKSLM on November 1st.

Kvstles Share Shadows Single

Wanted to slink into Thursday with a little bit of reflective energy from LA’s Kvstles. It’s a home project that falls somewhere in the realm between Blank Dogs and Black Marble, albeit with a bit less pace. Bringing in deep-throated vocals builds the sadness in the lyrics, though that bright guitar line that dances in and out makes it difficult to not hear the sparkle of the melody. Something mellow and sweet to kick our day off here.

Gold Cage Share Shadows and Release Social Crutch

Always a fan of the slowcore style, I’m really into this new record from Gold Cage. I love how the song just feels steady, like its serving to give you a semblance of balance amidst the turmoil of your life. Plus, I’m a sucker for those meandering guitar lines snaking their way around my ears, left and right, inside and out, dropping little melodic footnotes along the way. Besides, you get the soft curl of the vocals hanging in the front of the mix, likely to leave you with daydream scars. If you like what you hear, check out their new LP Social Crutch, out today via Felte.

Swedish Pop Punk from Terrible Feelings

We’re running a very rock oriented Thursday it seems, so Sweden’s Terrible Feelings fit right in with that motif. The group recently signed on with Deranged Records to release their album, Shadows, this April.  For my ears, it’s definitely got something going on, beyond stereotypical punk/pop; there’s something in the vocal delivery that harkens back to days before punk was even born, lending itself to sort of a haunting effect.  Sweden seems to think they’re full of angst and darkness, and I see that, but over here in the States, it’s just good old fashioned rock n’ roll–the kind we love here at ATH.

New Dream Jam from The New Division

I’d regret not giving a shout out to my ladyfriend who raved about The New Division months ago, and due to my need for heavier music during the Spring, I sort of put it off, until now. This Cali group will be releasing their new album, Shadows, on September 27th, furthering my belief that September is going to be a killer month for music. Hearing this first single, “Opium,” I feel as if the band is going for sort of a Cut Copy feel, but with a darker tint, rather than the sharp edges of the aforementioned. Still, you can definitely shake it to this track, or just let it wash over you, either way is acceptable.

New Tunes from Teenage Fanclub

Great news out of Scotland today!  We’re proud to announce the return of Teenage Fanclub, who’ve taken a bit of time off.  They return June 8th with Shadows via Merge Records.  Listening to this single, it seems the band are at it again with their summery power-pop that shoots straight for the heart, or my heart at least.  Welcome back fellas.
