Last Week’s Jams (10.23 – 10.27)

We had a busy week here at ATH, prepping for the festival by throwing some Levitation interviews your way, but there was still tons of music to get out there. We ran some conversations with Video Age, Pachyman, Civic and Shannon and the Clams…plus, I got a Rock n’ Recipe in from the good folks at Lower Plenty. So, lots of words to read from other folks on their music. We also had fresh tunes all over the place from ATH favorites like the Umbrellas, Steven van Betten and Glimmer. Pretty busy week with tons to talk about, so be sure to browse through the site too…as there’s more than just sweet jams from last week!

Shannon and the Clams Have Another Hit For You

shannonAs I’m writing this, I’m thinking back to a few years back when it felt like Shannon and the Clams were everyone’s little secret love affair.  The name had gotten some buzz, but I don’t think I met more than a couple of people that were totally committed to the cause. But, with songs like this, it’s easy to see how the band has woven its way into the hearts of everyone.  There’s a certain credibility to Shannon’s work in various garage/indie rock circles, but the band also has a timeless sound that is undeniable.  Gone by the Dawn, the band’s new LP will be out via Hardly Art on September 11th.

Shannon and the Clams Return

Shannon and The ClamsThis track has been everywhere the last few days, but I’m just getting back to civilization, so excuse my tardiness. It’s good to see that Shannon and the Clams are back at it, and they return with a sultry twang that should definitely put them on more people’s radar.  It’s a sound that falls right in line with the band’s nostalgic nods they’ve been making over the years; this time the group rolls through the track slowly allowing Shannon’s voice to be the superstar (it always was).  Their new album, Gone by the Dawn, comes September 11th via Hardly Art.  Check the video for the song HERE.

Here’s the Next Guantanamo Baywatch Single

gbI have an inkling that it’s going to be a really good year for the trio that is Guantanamo Baywatch.  They had a really good buzz both before and after SXSW, and the more we hear from their forthcoming album, the more we here at ATH are falling in love.  Their latest track has the band falling in line with like-minded artists the Shivas or Shannon and the Clams; the bands all have a knack for blending elements of garage rock with the purity of doo-wop.  It’s the sort of tunes you’d play to let your folks get hip to your good tastes.  Look for Darling…It’s Too Late, their latest, on May 12th by way of Suicide Squeeze.

Listen to New Music from Shannon and the Clams

guantanamoshannonEarlier this year we brought you the great tune from Guantanamo Baywatch for their new split 7″ on Suicide Squeeze, so we’d be in trouble if we didn’t share both sides of the coin, right? Besides, I’ve always enjoyed listening to Shannon and the Clams.  She’s got this soulful voice that just seems huge, whether it’s in the live setting or coming through your speakers.  Personally, I love how the Clams switch to this swinging ballad to a jittery boogie that’s sure to get crowds riled up; it’s one of the many staples of the group’s sounds.  This new single will be released on April 29th, but make sure you get your hands on it early.

New Music from Guantanamo Baywatch (SXSW Act)

gbAh, yes, it’s time for the Suicide Squeeze Singles to start rolling out, and they’re starting with a bang.  Their new series begins with a split between ATH favorites Shannon and the Clams and Guantanamo Baywatch.  Last time I heard from GB, they were rocking a sweaty punk style, but this new jam seems like the perfect fit for a shared 7″ with Shannon.  It’s a country-tied garage jam with a slow pace and lyrics that will allow you optimal sing-a-long fun.  This single will hit stores on April 29th, but you can catch the band playing throughout Austin during SXSW, including the SS Party with our friends at Hardly Art on March 14th.

Show Review: Mikal Cronin @ Mohawk (6.27)

Sure, we knew it was going to be a sweat night, with temperatures still bordering on 100 when the bands took the stage at The Mohawk, but how hot would it get? Real hot. Sweat from bands, sweat from fans and sweat from our drinks. Regardless, the rock must go on, and rock it did. A Giant Dog, Shannon and the Clams and Mikal Cronin get commendations for valor in the face of hair dryer air.

Read on for our thoughts on all the bands and see B.Gray’s pretty photos.

mikal

Date Thursday, June 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 7 PM – Show at 8
Tickets $10 from Mohawk

Many of you know Mikal Cronin as one of the guys that makes Ty Segall sound so incredible live, but the guy’s been putting out music with various outfits, not to mention his own solo work.  Recently, he released MCII, and I guarantee you that the album will end up on year end lists.  But, there’s two incredible openers that need your support.  Shannon and the Clams have been doing their own soulful garage rock for quite some time, always bringing the energy live.  Finally, be there by 8 to catch local band A Giant Dog, who feature members of OBN IIIs and Bobby Jealousy…that alone should be enough to get you out.  Plus, if you stay around afterwards you can catch local boys Sweet Talk  and Act Rights.

More New Music From Shannon & The Clams

ShannonAndTheClams1As the release of their new album, Dreams in the Rat House, nears its May 21st release date on Hardly Art Records, Shannon and The Clams want to offer us more free music.  This new tune to get you excited for the album release is called “Into a Dream” and features some of the things we love about this band.  Again you’ll hear the soulful old school style doo wop song with Shannon showing her range that could rival most anyone.  I’m expecting even better things from the band once we get to hear the full album.
