Show Preview: of Montreal (10/23)

of_montreal

Date 10/23/14
Location The Mohawk (Outside)
Doors 7:30pm
Tickets 18$ Here

Ok, of Montreal‘s a pretty impressive band that puts on notoriously killer live shows. Oh, you’ve somehow never seen the weirdness that is Kevin Barnes & company in the live setting? Well, there’s a link just above where you can change that problem for under twenty bucks. If you’re like me and you’re always down for something a little funky, or if October’s got you feeling spooky, head over to the Mohawk and check out the psychedelic and flamboyantly twisted rock from this legendary band. Openers are Pillar Point, who sound like they’ll be a display of electronic delight to loosen up those dancing shoes.

Get in the mood with this eclectic little throwback tune from the band’s Skeletal Lamping:

Show Preview: Mutual Benefit @ Red 7 (Tonight 10/21)

mutual

Date 10/21/14 (TONIGHT)
Location Red 7
Doors 9:00pm
Tickets 12$ Here, 14$ at the Door

Mutual Benefit is the work of Jordan Lee and sometimes his friends– that is to say this project from Lee is often just one man’s take on quiet and well orchestrated folk/experimental pop that happens to be fleshed out with the help from many others. If you’ve never heard the band before, you should expect a mix of delicate string work mixed with fluttering lyrics. Opening up for them are Suno Deko, who sound like a nice little mix of electronic and indie rock, a la something like Sun Airway. This should be a gentle addition to your tuesday evening.

Have a listen to what exactly you’ll be missing if you don’t turn up to Red 7 tonight:

Show Preview: Perfume Genius @ the Parish (10.14)

Perfume-Genius-001

Date Tuesday, October 14th
Location The Parish
Doors 7:00 PM
Tickets $15 from the Parish

I know every one is milling about trying to get their hands on those Widespread Panic tickets, but if you didn’t luck out there, you’ve got a better option waiting in the wings.  Perfume Genius will be bringing his intimate sounds to the perfect setting: the Parish stage.  Now, while his early work was quite solemn and based around piano ballads, his newest album, Too Bright, offers a broader spectrum of sounds.  There’s still this brilliantly personal approach to the songwriting, but the sound has blossomed into a huge pop opus.  Those not in attendance will regret their choice, as this will clearly be the rage at the office water cooler on Wednesday morning. Matteah Baim will be opening the evening up.

Weekend Show Preview: Beyond Weekend 2

Austin, I love you.Yes, ACL gets all the headlines around these parts, but there’s still plenty of great music to be had, so why not head out on the town and catch a good old fashioned gig.  I mean, it’s Texas/OU weekend, so the streets are likely to be less crowded…and there’s really no other excuse for why you shouldn’t catch a good act.  Look below for our highlights, including a must attend Sunday night show at Vegas; I’ll be there for sure! Show Preview: The Shivas @ Hotel Vegas (TONIGHT)

The-ShivasIt’s Wednesday, your energy is back up from the weekend, so why not destroy it with a little rock n’ roll? Sure, there’s some other shows in town (Guitars Eat Bass Amps, Borrisokane), but there really is one place you can go for the best rock n’ roll time of your life.  For one, The Shivas will be in town at Hotel Vegas.  Their last 7″, with the track below, literally played every day on my stereo for two months…at least once a day, if not more.  Plus, three incredible local acts from your town of Austin will be playing: Rayon Beach, Loteria and Nameless Frames.  The latter is fairly new on the scene, but the other two have been killing it for years, with Loteria taking up my vote for most underrated act in town. You know you’ll have fun here.

Show Preview: Dark Blue @ Beerland (10.2)

ceremonyThe town is about to be billowing over with traffic; you know you’re going to be filled with angst, especially if you live near Barton Springs Rd, so why not get that anger out with a really rad rock n’ roll show at Beerland on Thursday.  I’ve covered a lot of the tunes from Dark Blue, who are sort of a lesser-known super group of sorts (Paint it Black, Strand of Oaks, Ceremony); their music is this darkened rock n’ roll that’s had me hooked for weeks.  But, if that’s not enough to get you out, then just look at the incredible line-up featuring great local acts Total Abuse, Video and Xetas; there’s not a better bill in town, I promise.  Check out Pure Reality below, the new LP from Dark Blue.

ACL Festival: Spoon vs The Replacements

The Replacements Perform At Metro StudiosACL Festival is only a week away, so those browsing their schedule have probably started to realize there are some huge conundrums.  Who do you go see when two great bands are going head to head? The biggest “oh my god what were they thinking” moment comes with the battle to see Spoon vs. The Replacements.  Yes, Spoon is riding high after a great album this year, and they’ve got a historically strong draw in Austin.  That alone warrants them a viewing.  But, but, BUT!!! They’re playing on Sunday against legendary act, The Replacements.  Yes, you might not get the original line-up, and you might get the rumored Billie Joe Armstrong (of Green Day) helping out, but dammit if you don’t want to miss this set.  No offense to Spoon, but they’ll be around for some time to come; I might not, however, ever get the chance to see The Replacements again…and I’ll cry if they play the tune below.  So what is one to do? Current hit-makers vs. legendary band? There’s only one choice.

My winner for this battle is The Replacements. One could even propose the idea that without one, the other wouldn’t exist.

Show Preview: Growlers @ Scoot Inn (9.27)

The-Growlers-by-Trevor-OwsleyThe last few years, my record collection has grown in size, due greatly to the productivity of The Growlers.  Last year, they had Hung at Heart, which made it into our Top Ten Albums of the Year, plus an EP; this year they released Chinese Fountain this week…again, already winning those of us at ATH over.  It’s this combination of jangling pop, Cali swagger, and even a hint of some folk elements…all things I can get on board with.  So, if you’re looking to make a splash with a date, or just catch a really incredible show, you should head over to Scoot Inn on Saturday night to catch these guys.  You can pick up tickets HERE.  The show will start at 9:00 PM, but doors are at 8, so you can come in early and grab a drink with the friendly staff.

Show Preview: Woods @ Holy Mountain (8.20)

woods2_630x300

Date Wednesday, August 20th
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9:00
Tickets $12 from Transmission

I feel like Woods is one of the bands that I will forever undervalue.  I snatch up everything they put out, then indulge far too frequently in those purchases. But, then I sometimes forget they even exist, especially since Kevin Morby always has something going on.  Luckily, we can all indulge on Wednesday in a little bit of Woods; their live sets are phenomenal, not to be missed gigs.  They cover so much sonic ground, from folk to pop to psychedelia, and it all blends together so seamlessly. Odds are they’ll spend a great bit of the night covering their most recent effort, With Light and With Love, yet I now they’ll fill their set with delights from the back catalogue. See you guys Wednesday!
