Show Preview: Buxton @ Holy Mountain (TONIGHT)

iecdyqosugnlarlyzzk6Having released their new album, Half a Native, Houston’s Buxton are starting to make some big waves all over.  The group’s been around for awhile here in Texas, building on their renown live show…exhilarating and full of great pop sensibility.  They’ll be bringing said live show to Holy Mountain tonight, and they’ll be joined by some of our local favorites.  We love Shivery Shakes so much we decided to put out their excellent LP, Three Waves and a Shake (there are still some available HERE) and you’ll be remiss if you don’t catch their show.  Opening band AMA will be worth your early entrance, so show up a little after doors at 9 PM.

Buxton also have an in-store over at Waterloo Records at 5 PM.

Show Preview: Eternal Summers @ Holy Mountain (4.20)

Eternal SummersIt’s not too often that you get a killer show on a Monday evening, but the line-up over at Holy Mountain tonight is something you absolutely can’t miss.  You’ve got Eternal Summers headlining the gig; they’re about to release Gold & Stone, their fourth album, showing their continuous improvement as purveyors of bombastic indiepop.  They’ll be joined by Turbo Fruits, a force to reckon on their own.  But, I beg you to get their really early? Why? Two of our favorite local acts Kay Odyssey and Rose Selavy will be opening the night, bringing their own pop music to the stage. There’s too few acts playing this sort of music in Austin, so come check out a couple of our best.  Doors are at 8 PM and it’ll only cost you $10 to check out four great bands.

Show Preview: Lady Lamb The Beekeeper @ Lambert’s 04/17

file4

Date 04/17
Location Lambert’s
Doors 9:30
Tickets 10$ Here

Riding high off the release of her stunning album, After, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper is gracing our great city with her incredible live act that is at once intimate and high energy. Aly Spaltro is notorious for her powerful vocals and while these vocals serve as the backbone to her music, it’s impossible to overlook the rest of the musical elements that we encountered on her most recent release that made for a large collection of excellent and infectious pop tunes. Lady Lamb will have you dancing your ass off one minute with sunny pop driven by the bouncing percussion, and then pulling at your heartstrings in the next with a stripped down tune. At only ten dollars, there is really no reason that you shouldn’t be at Lambert’s this Friday night. Don’t miss out on this one.

ATX Spotlight: Legendary Skies Release Novarupta (4/10)

11081179_1091877397495744_644842800649873449_nAustin’s been known to host an instrumental post-rock act or two…from Balmorhea to Explosions in the Sky, and everything in between.  Enter Legendary Skies, one of the newer acts on the scene, who are ready to unleash their album Novarupta to the Austin masses (and hopefully beyond). Interestingly, the band draw from all the forebears in our local post-rock scene, building crash atop crash, yet always falling in step with more intricate guitar pieces made for long drives along sparse Texas highways.  Head over to Hole in the Wall this Friday night to catch the band live, and help celebrate the release of their album.

Show Preview: Craft Spells @ Red 7 (3.3)

Craft-SpellsThere’s always a lull right before SXSW, so you’ve got to grab onto the great shows while you’ve got the time.  Tuesday night offers the dream pop of Craft Spells, and you’re really going to want to be in attendance for this gig. The band have capitalized on two great albums, Idle Labor and Nausea, both on Captured Tracks; they’ve built a name for themselves on creating music that will entrance you, erasing everything around you so that you’re lost in their work.  Personally, I’m also really excited to see openers The Bilinda Butchers who I’ve been onto for years, and locals Whiite Walls.  It’s going to be a beautiful night of tunes, so join me at the show, won’t you?

Here’s song from Craft Spells and Bilinda Butchers. Tickets are $12; you can buy them HERE.

Show Preview: The Dodos/Springtime Carnivore (02.18)

dodos-779623

Date 02.18
Location The Parish
Doors 9:00pm
Tickets 15$ Here

Now this is a show I am super excited for as both of these bands are on the heels of releasing killer albums, so you really can’t afford to miss out on this night of music. Up first will be Springtime Carnivore, the psychedelic pop project of Greta Morgan, whose debut album is filled with classic pop hooks and effortlessly reverb soaked vocals that will set your feet to dancing and your head bobbing in approval. If you’re having doubts check out “Name on a Matchbook” below and get hooked.

And of course, who can forget the main act of the night, The Dodos, whose recent fifth studio LP felt like a trip back to their high energy sound. They’ll surely bring a setlist of new and old tracks, both of which are bound to delight. If you haven’t already, listen to “Competition,” so you’ll be refreshed and reminded of how infectiously good these guys are at making rustic pop music.

ATX Show Spotlight: Two For Tuesday (Dead Space + Zola Jesus)

zolaCatchy name game, am I right? There are two really incredible shows on Tuesday night, and frankly, they’re on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.  That being said, I suggest you follow in our footsteps and hit up both. Those looking to indulge their pop sweet tooth need to hit up Zola Jesus and Deradoordian at Mohawk.  ZJ is coming into town rocking her new album TAIGA; I’m hoping she touches a lot on her last LP, Conatus quite a bit.  You can get tickets for $16 HERE; doors are at 6:30 PM.

But, on the other end of the spectrum is the phenomenal line-up at Hotel Vegas.  The Dead Space are the spotlight, and they’re record Faker might just be one of the best records to come out of ATX in some time. Still, you can catch other heavy hitters Ghetto Ghouls and Beth Israel if you’re up to it.  I think you’re best served by hitting up both shows. Doors at Vegas open at 9 PM.

ATX Show Preview: The Paul Collins Beat @ Hotel Vegas (TONIGHT!!!)

paul-collins-beat-record-fair-650x800It’s Thursday, and we should rejoice that our weather here in Austin has been pretty phenomenal while others are burrowing beneath blankets of snow.  So, celebrate by heading out to Hotel Vegas tonight to catch The Paul Collins Beat.  Paul was one a member of power-poppers The Nerves, not to mention this new group The Beat (renamed due to some English band). But, I implore you to get there early as the opening acts feature some of my local (and regional) favorites.  I can’t tell you many more times how much you need to see Jonly Bonly, let alone buy their album, Put Together.  Then there’s the Ugly Beats, who consistently win fans all about town.  And, just before Paul takes the stage, you’ll be treated to The Rich Hands…they’re a San Antonio act who we’ve backed since they first walked through our doors.  This looks like one of those shows everyone will be talking about at the water cooler, so don’t miss out.
