Last Week’s Jams (1.6 – 1.10)

You missed our weekly roundup, didn’t you? Well, Last Week’s Jams returns, circling back on an organized playlist to remind you of all the fun we had rocking out the previous week. Touched on some Austin stuff with Gus Baldwin and Matador Sphere, making sure we rep the home base as often as possible. The big battle of the musical week came from The Laughing Chimes and Sharp Pins, both going head to head for some incredible indie vibes that will dominate the landscape this year…or so I hope. Didn’t hurt that we also got to hear more from Prism Shores and Pink Chameleons as they prep their new releases. Dig in below and don’t be afraid to tell me what you loved.

Signal Share You Must Win

If I were to pick a day to jam to this new Signal tune, it feels like a perfect Sunday morning experience, something that invites solitude and reflection with a warm cup of tea or what have you in your hand. There’s this slowness that allows the purity of the melody to rise through the tune, and once its riddled with the patient crawl of the vocals you’re greeted with something that wouldn’t seem out of place on the B-side of a Galaxie 500 recording. The duo are early on in their writing process, but you can definitely hear that they’re onto something pure if you click play below.

Fresh Tunes from Daphne Tunes

How does one write about a friend without feeling like you’re blowing smoke up their ass? I loved working Santiago during his tenure with Growl, but this Daphne Tunes stuff he’s been working on is quite possibly some of the best pop music coming out of the city of Austin. I think the delicate approach he and his band have taken to these recordings creates such a refined sound that it’s hard not to marvel at what’s coming through your speakers. Santi’s voice comes across stronger than ever, and I love the way the guitars duel with one another as he hangs his vocal notes at the end of each stanza, letting them drift through your living space. Such a special track, and just one of a handful he’ll be playing at our ATH vs SOTO SXSW show on March 10 at Hotel Vegas!
