Deary Share Selene Single

I only recently got into Deary, but with a new single, they’re sound continues to mesmerize, working on the softer side of dream pop. When you listen to their newest single (mastered by Slowdive’s Simon Scott), you’ll find that wall of ambient noise lurking, but it sort of feels like it’s hanging in the shadows, careful not to show too much of itself. That suits the vocals perfectly, as they too hide, layering in melody where it feels more textural, which is one of my favorite moves in the genre. Towards the latter half of the song, a keyboard line begins to emerge, allowing the song to build towards a climactic pop crescendo that continues to have the group bustling in my listening rotation.

Three Quarter Skies Share Leave a Light On

Simon Scott’s name is going to carry a lot of weight into his Three Quarter Skies project, and rightfully so, as the drummer for Slowdive is building something that certainly feels adjacent to his other work. This song feels like a light rainstorm rolling in off the ocean, as you can see/hear the clouds from miles away, but when they arrive via the vocals, they’re lighter, merely rinsing you with emotion rather than pummeling you with thunderous rain drops. It’s the sort of storm where you just sit in it, grateful to be alive as your body is washed by this musical piece, all the textures of the world circling about. Fade In will be released on September 6th via Sonic Cathedral.

Orcas Share Next Life Single

Simon Scott is having a busy week here on ATH, with one single coming earlier via his own project, and now he jumps on to build the sounds of New York’s Orcas. The musical world they’ve created sounds cautiously cavernous, offering a depth that begs you to dip your body into their pools of melody. For me, I was drawn towards the tender notes on the tip of the vocals; they have their own natural movement, sliding alongside the music, then rising in a more angelic fashion. This tune is where the pop world melts into post-rock, and we’re all better for it. Their new album, How to Color a Thousand Mistakes drops on July 19th.

Three Quarter Skies Drops New Single

If you haven’t heard of Three Quarter Skies, but consider yourself a Slowdive fan, well, this is drummer Simon Scott’s new project. Today they’ve shared the latest single, and it’s the perfect vibe to just lose yourself inside, if that’s your sort of thing. There’s this slowly ebbing wall of atmosphere that builds for the first minute (plus), anchored by a stark percussive element; you can almost see the melding of sounds and colors before you as the tune plays. When the vocals come into the picture, they take on this sort of shadowy quality, which can be a bit disorienting; it does feel as if it moves with the shifts that coincide with the track itself.
