Bjorn Torske Shares Another Tune

Spending most of my days at the moment in front of my television watching the World Cup, so its great to get an instrumental disco groove going on in the background as the ball moves around the pitch. The first four minutes of this track have Bjorn Torske setting up the groove, with a little wiggling line working over looped cymbals; every once in a while a guitar chord lurks from the shadows, but usually fades. The latter half of the track takes the same mold and applies some sampled chanting to the mix, then slides some atmospheric synths to wash over it all. His new album, Byen, is dropping on July 6th via Smalltown Supersound.

Drifting Off to Bjorn Torske

I’ve spent my mornings trying to wrap up assignments with my students, and now that it’s my off-period, I’m just staring aimlessly at the world outside my classroom window. What’s the soundtrack to that longing gaze of freedom? It’s that new tune from Bjorn Torske. It opens with this ambient collage, but then kicks it in with a groovy shimmy, so I’m bobbing my head and shaking it a little…as my mind wanders beyond the walls. It’s the perfect afternoon treat, equal parts melodious and upbeat. You’ll find this tune on his new LP, and first in 8 years; it’s titled Byen, and drops on July 6th via Smalltown Supersound.

Lindstrom Is Back

lindyDon’t mind me folks, just sitting here jamming out on my lunch break, hoping none of my students walk in while I’m shaking it to this new Lindstrom. I love the fact that I can turn it up, bob my head, then suddenly there’s a subtle change in the song. It’s one of the finer touches of electronic tunes that I’ve recently rediscovered, so I have no problem pumping this track as it goes from sterile to blossoming with radiant atmospheric touches. This is our first listen to music from his forthcoming EP, which is slated for a release later in the year via Smalltown Supersound.

Recalibrate Your Brain

artworks-000073405557-9sdcma-t500x500A little PYAITK for Friday…

You know it has been a long week; so many shows, liver abuse, too many whiskies, perhaps a marathon, a bathroom remodel or just the boss that won’t chill. No matter the source of your stress, I present this song to level your mood.

Ever heard of Brian Reitzell? Sure, you have. You have seen movies with his original music or well-curated soundtracks. Did you see Lost In Translation? So yeah, street cred, but his latest project is an LP called Auto Music. “Last Summer” is a sample from the album due in early June on Smalltown Supersound and a means to soothe, relax and then rebuild your brain in eight and a half minutes with a little help from MBV’s Kevin Shields.

Playful Pop from Arp

arpThe more I listen to the latest single for Arp, the more I just want to fall in love with the band; you know give myself over to their grandeur.  This track begins on the backbone of a nice little piano bounce, with airy vocals plodding along atop.  A distant guitar meanders through in the distance about midway through the track, leaving an emotional touch that really steps up the song’s level of achievement, emotionally speaking.  More, the new album from the group, will be available for everyone to enjoy on September 17th via Smalltown Supersound. Can’t wait.

Something New from Arp

arpI know I’m usually the one with a tendency towards power-pop or punk rock here, but I couldn’t resist posting this incredible song from Arp.  The project of Alexis Georgopoulos has been quiet since 2010, though he’s popped up here and there.  This piece exemplifies why Arp is such a special listen, revolving around the voice for the most part, though the entrance of horns and organ definitely take the song into another level of beauty.  I’m in love with Alexis’ voice throughout the tune, softly operatic and accented by the light guitar work backbone.  His new record, More, will come out on September 19th via Smalltown Superound.

Solemn Track from Carmen Villain

I’d find it really easy to dismiss the work of Carmen Villain as some sort of kitsch, seeing as she spent a part of her early adulthood as model Carmen Hillestad.  But, after listening to the first single from her upcoming album, I find her enchanting for a wholly different reason.  There’s a slight rasp to her vocals, and the accompanying music quietly supports her quieted approach.  The album is titled Sleeper, and it’s being released by Smalltown Supersound on March 12th.  After multiple listens to the single, I definitely see the title of the release as quite fitting.
