Last Week’s Jams (9.16 – 9.20)

A ton of new music dropped this past week, and as usual, we were on-hand to cover the stuff sliding under the radar of the cognoscenti. We had a few premieres, like the latest from UVTV, which finds the band slowing things down and exploring the shadowy tones of dreampop. I made sure to hype one of my favorite releases of the month, Mo Dotti, which I’m hoping is on the way to my doorstep any day. Still, some of our favorite labels Meritorio and Bobo Integral dropped new tunes from Slack Times and The Psych Fis, and we filled in the gaps with popular favorites like 2nd Grade and Greg Mendez, among many others. Just press play and send a thank you letter.

Snailosaur Shares Nature & Kaleidoscopic Mind

Brooklyn outfit Snailosaur keep forging ahead, brandishing their love for heralded indie rock sounds, filtered through their distinctive vocal work and phenomenal drum section. When listening, you get hints of Berman or Mascis or Callahan, though done up with a bit of an amphetamine rush, setting up the two new tunes to rip through your speakers with a wall of noise. While they offer up the Dinosaur Jr-esque “Nature”, they turn it into a more pensive piece on “Kaleidoscopic Mind,” settling into a Western ballad that carefully frays the edge between Americana and indie rock. Both tunes rip, so enjoy them both below!

Last Week’s Jams (1.15 – 1.19)

Last week was a strange one, particularly with the seeming loss of Pitchfork. But, here at ATH, we’re like the tortoise, just going slow and steady, doing our thing til we get to the proverbial finish line. There was tons of music to cover, and I mean tons, so we got to as much as we could, trying to highlight the stuff that wasn’t getting much love. Brand new music from Bolis Pupul came our way, plus Colin Newman reissue news. RayRay loved the new ripper from Gulfer. Personally, I loved the new Friko and Boy with Apple, and got to introduce you to new Fantastic Purple Spots from their EP next week! Sit back and enjoy some tunes.

Snailosaur Share Darkness + Release Talk Therapy

If you’re going to drop in a classic post rock style jam, what better way to follow that up than with a nice bit of classic indie rock sounds, a la Snailosaur. The band just released a new record titled Talk Therapy, and I hope this tune can turn you onto their work, as it’s the perfect exemplar of the LP’s style. Just imagine Bill Callahan turning Smog into something of a kind of rock tour de force, taking his introspective work and allowing it to unfold in the realm of quietloudquiet; it’s personal and explosive and I absolutely stomp around for a minute wailing on my air guitar as the tune rung out. Get you a taste.

Last Week’s Jams (10.23 – 10.27)

We had a busy week here at ATH, prepping for the festival by throwing some Levitation interviews your way, but there was still tons of music to get out there. We ran some conversations with Video Age, Pachyman, Civic and Shannon and the Clams…plus, I got a Rock n’ Recipe in from the good folks at Lower Plenty. So, lots of words to read from other folks on their music. We also had fresh tunes all over the place from ATH favorites like the Umbrellas, Steven van Betten and Glimmer. Pretty busy week with tons to talk about, so be sure to browse through the site too…as there’s more than just sweet jams from last week!

Snailosaur Release L Train Single

It makes sense that this new Snailosaur single came my way this week, as I was able to catch other guitar oriented acts like Karate and Codeine, and while not exactly in line, there’s some similarity in the construction of the band’s latest track. For starters, you’re going to get far more musicianship than vocals, as the group flexes their playing, putting more emphasis there than perhaps in the way the vocals come across. In speaking of the vocals, they’re mostly delivered indifferently, little pieces of poetry to fill your ear as the snappiness of the drums kick the pace on, spurring the song’s spirit. If you’re into the groovier side of acts like Pinback and Built to Spill, be sure to stick around until the end!

Last Week’s Jams (8.14 – 8.18)

Okay, so I’m back in school and coaching women’s volleyball, which of course meant we couldn’t dare draw near the 40 or so tracks we covered the week prior. But, that being said, there were some really special tunes, and some of my favorites popping up in here. Blue Ocean and Seablite announced new LPs, while the Smashing Times dropped another stellar single to whet our appetites. Local favorites Single Lash and Sun June both announced new releases too, so it was a pretty solid week. Oh, and that Optic Sink jam was so good, we might have accidentally overlapped and posted it twice! Stream below!

Check Out A New Single From Snailosaur

Brooklyn based group snailosaur hit our radar back in April with the release of their debut self-titled EP. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the brotherly duo until today with the release of yet another stunner with this new single called “Apartment Boxes (nyc poem).” This one hits me as a tune with a very intricate and deliberate instrumentation similar to a band like The National paired with the deepest of deep vocals akin to someone like Bill Callahan. It comes across as something immediately familiar, but also unique to the band and their layered sound.

Last Week’s Jams (4.10 – 4.14)

Looking back at last week, there was tons of really great stuff out there, and admittedly, there are a few things we just didn’t have time to get to on our end. But, stoked for Austin, as there was great new music from Being Dead, Transy Warhol, Holy Wire and new project Feeling Small. My favorite track from the most recent Blues Laywer LP got a video treatment, so I had to have that one out. RayRay covered that huge banger from Night Beats, who will be in town for Psych Fest. And, one of my favorite SXSW acts Snooper announced their new LP too, so you get a bunch of winning hits!

Snailosaur Release New EP

I love when I stumble across an act completely unknown to me, like New York’s Snailosaur. Their sound falls somewhere in between the vibes of Silver Jews and Dinosaur Jr, though probably more on the former for the song we’ve got featured below. It’s the opening track on their Snailosaur EP, introducing themselves to the world, and the first tune I heard that turned me on. I love the snappiness of the drums throughout the jam, as it feels like it breathes life into the solemn vocal delivery. Plus, fiery guitar lines chop right through the vibe, sure to let us know that while we’re getting the mellow up front, this lot aren’t afraid to rock.
