Jared Leibowich of the Zoltars Announces New LP

If you read our site, you surely know the name Jared Leibowich; he’s long been one of our favorite songwriters from the Austin area (though he’s recently moved), working with the Infinites and the Zoltars; we even released the last Zoltars LP on our own ATH Records. Well, Jared’s also such a constant ball of creation that he’s got a new LP ready under his own name, and there’s a fresh single that warrants your attention here. Centrally, there’s a stomping march from the rhythm section, pushing the song forward, allowing for all sorts of space for Jared to excel. And excel he does; he’s working with two vocal tracks, one in the front of the mix and the other adding a melodic backing vocal; it creates this bouncing joy that’s reminiscent of Panda Bear or Brian Wilson, leaving you with huge pop feels. If you’re into it, as you should be, Jared is releasing Secret Spells on October 27th via Bruit Direct Disques.

Rock N’ Recipes: Heather Trost

Heather Trost is perhaps best known as one half of Hawk and a Hacksaw, but as we’ve tried to show on this site recently, their new album Desert Flowers has us excited for her solo work. We were fortunate to catch up with Heather, talk about the record, influences and her favorite food memories. Plus, she leaves us with a wonderful recipe for corba, which is a great red lentil soup with Turkish origins. Check out the interview and recipe after the jump!

Jesse Tabish Announces Cowboy Ballads Pt. 1

I’ve known Jesse Tabish since he was a teenager. Long before he took the stage opening for the likes of Radiohead with his band Other Lives. But, with the announcement of Cowboy Ballads Pt. 1, you can hear a confident songwriter building the world he’s slowly been building for himself over the last two decades. Everything feels huge and extravagant, like the score to a movie on TMC, though much of this new LP was recorded by Jesse and his wife Kim, as well as various other friends form his musical circle. I love the way the song has this natural swing to it, sort of a bossanova groove that rides on the undercurrent, bringing in the positivity that Jesse hopes to share in this new record. Cowboy Ballads Pt. 1 is out on October 21st via Play It Again Sam.

Marissa Paternoster Shares Final Single from Peace Meter

This Friday Don Giovanni will be dropping Marissa Paternoster‘s proper debut as a solo artist, and we’ve been covering the singles all along the way. I’m excited by the album because I feel like we’re really getting some insight into Paternoster’s life, and while its been there before, it feels much more intimate and relatable in the presentation of this record. Musically, this song seems full, yet stripped down. The mix feels peeled back like the layers of an onion, leaving us with the core that is Marissa’s unique voice driving the emotional pull of the track. Peace Meter drops Friday, so be sure to check it out, grab it, you know, support your favorite artists.

Sarah La Puerta Announces Strange Paradise

Former Austinite (now New Yorker) Sarah La Puerta was long a staple of our music scene, through various projects, but perhaps most notable was as part of the old lineup of Tele Novella; she also graced us by sharing a tune for our Slack Capital 2 project with Eric from Big Bill. Anyways, she’s just announced her debut solo effort for Perpetual Doom records, and dammit if the open single doesn’t just knock it out of the park. Upon my first listen, I thought there was this simplicity to the craft, which allowed for the vocals to really sparkle; there’s this classic beauty to her sound here, something so effortlessly timeless. Still, go back and listen to the track, you can hear little quiet bass bubbles, ornate guitar flourishes and an evolving electronic ambiance. It all makes for a powerful statement that is sure to be fulfilling upon its November 12th release!

Holm Share Intelligent Moves Single

We’re big fans of Danish outfit Yung, so we’re excited to see what Mikkel Holm Silkjaer brings to the table with his Holm project. On this latest single, there’s just this ringing guitar that seems to kind of take on that brand of post-punk we all adore. But, it’s Mikkel’s vocal delivery, particularly when it gets some backing vocal accompaniment, that really helps to deliver this melodic moment, albeit brief. For me, listening through, there’s all these little musical twists and turns too, which are great, because they’re illustrating the risks he’s taking in his songwriting…nothing seems overly formulaic, so I appreciate the freshness. Why Don’t You Dance is out on November 12th via PNKSLM.

Sasha Bell Announces Solo Album

Sasha Bell has a remarkable resume; she’s been a key part of Ladybug Transistor, Essex Green and The Sixth Great Lake…and now she’s stepping out on her own with Love is Alright. There are definitely some musical elements that will sound familiar; the first thing that stuck out to me was the dreaminess of the guitars churning in the background, combining that sparkling jangle with crisp notes that ring out in step with her vocals. I was really drawn to the space the song allowed around the 2 minute mark, allowing some air to sort of breathe into the song, giving off this celestial quality you won’t forget. Of course, the power of Bell’s vocals can mesmerize you as well; I love the way certain notes get curled from emphatic delivery to understated elegance at the end of syllables. Quite a start to a solo career; Love Is Alright will be out November 8th via Both Sides Now.
