Blues Laywer Drop Video for Someone Else

How can you listen to a Blues Lawyer song like “Someone Else” and skip by? Drums and guitars and vocals all drop in simultaneously, immediately bringing in a rush of enjoyment to your ears. There’s something in this tune that feels like a classic 90s alt rock jam, offering up a warm melody with the faintest grit from guitar distortion ringing beneath the surface. But, for me, the selling point comes in the brief rhythm switch from the drums right at the 1:50 mark, setting up this mantra that explodes into this joyous bit of power pop to close the tune. If you haven’t purchased your copy of All in Good Time, then what the hell are you waiting for!? And, if you’re fortunate enough to live in the PNW, they’ll be running a quick tour through next week with Chime School!

Fresh Jam from Dead Stars

dead-stars-2014It seems like the rest of the world is catching on to what we already knew: Dead Stars are a rad rad band. So much so, that I actually walked two miles during SXSW to catch them play live (it was worth it!).  This new single is just as catchy and enjoyable as anything I’ve heard in this vein this year; it’s got a driving beat, fuzzed out guitar, but what I like the most is that there was extra attention to the vocals in the mix. This is one of those bands I put on little mixes to try and hip my friends to all the great jams out there. You can pick up their new album, Slumber, from Old Flame Records on June 17th.

Mas Musica de Pure X

artworks-000040620860-sbur4m-t500x500Personally, I’m really excited about the upcoming effort from Pure X, Crawling Up the Stairs.  While I really enjoyed their last effort, I’m thinking they might be mixing things up a bit, expanding their sound.  If you listen to this new single, you’ll definitely have to agree, as the vocals alone indicate a larger focus on that aspect; I felt like it was used as an instrument the last go round.  Still, it’s got this drifting quality that enchants listeners, though that’s juxtaposed to the gruff quality on some of the vocal delivery, which might be off-putting (even grating), depending upon who you ask.  All in all, this new single indicates a band refining and expanding their sound; on May 14th we’ll all get a chance to hear the full collection of tunes.
