It’s that weird time of the year when everyone pretends that they stop writing music for a few months so we can browse the list of Best New Artists, or whatever. We do it too, though I’ll probably keep writing about songs if folks keep sending them to me. But, before the year “wraps up” and stuff, here’s a few more new records to listen to today that you’ll hopefully enjoy! Note: I included a few from last week, because last week I ran an Austin-centric streams post, so booyah!

Emma Anderson Delivers Fresh Single, The Presence

Having covered the majority of the singles from Emma Anderson‘s forthcoming solo record, I totally had my own expectations when hitting play on the new single, but admittedly, I got spun around. Within seconds, keys tease you into a quick drop that delivers a sharp toe-tapping bit of guitar work; you can hear the faint build of lush atmosphere behind Anderson’s voice, but for the most part, everything here feels snappy and fresh. This is precisely the way one moves forward into their own territory, leaving breadcrumbs to Lush, but making a sound that feels vibrant and joyous on its own terms. Real excited to hear all of Pearlies when it drops this Friday via Sonic Cathedral.

Deary Share Video for Sleepsong

It’s a great morning to slide into the dreamy realms of Deary; the opening sparkle of the guitar notes fit perfectly with the raindrops trickling down the window of my classroom. Those same notes build a faint hint of promise, opening the song to the vocals, working from the bottom of the mix, almost operating as pure texture in the cavernous dream world the group is crafting. And yes, the title’s absolutely fitting, as you can easily find yourself drifting into dreamland as you immerse yourself into the tune; I hear it as a sleepier Beach House, letting the melodies and hooks hide in the shadows a bit more. Deary will release their self-titled EP on November 17th via Sonic Cathedral.

Mildred Maude Share Single ft. Lorena Quintanilla

It seems like Lorena Quintanilla has officially arrived in my algorithm, as the Lorelle Meets the Obsolete singer has been popping up all over my feeds lately…this time lending her voice to the new single from Mildred Maude. In working on recordings, the band found that felt “kind of senic,” almost cinematic in nature, which led them to the decision to invite Lorena to lend her voice to these tracks. The drums are anti-propulsive here, serving as the track’s heartbeat as the sonic structure ebbs and flows, matched by the technicolor wash of the video. Quintanilla’s voice rides those crests, sort of lapping at the edges of your ears, back and forth, teasing you to immerse yourself in the confines of the tune. You’ll hear this track on the band’s new Microclimates EP, out October 27th via Sonic Cathedral.

Lorelle Meets the Obsolete Share Ave en Reversa Video

We’ve got to keep our International readers happy, and with that, we turn towards Mexico’s Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. Earlier this summer, the group released Datura, but today I’m stoked to share a new video from standout “Ave en Reversa.” I was hooked from the opening, dropping in this angular line that kicks in enough pop to it that you can’t help but bob your head as the hi-hat shimmies in the background. Singer Lorena moves inside those notes, playfully maneuvering with this relaxed cool that carefully drifts atop the tune. As things progress, those angular notes get a bit sharper as the band start to flex their post-punk tendencies and creativity; see the pulsating midtrack breakdown for a prime example. But, just as easily as they slide into that, they creep right back into the melodic vibe, closing out the song in style. Datura is available now via Sonic Cathedral.

Emma Anderson (Lush) Announces Debut LP

It seems weird that someone with the pedigree of Emma Anderson is just now releasing her debut solo record, but seeing as I love those Lush records, I’ll gladly spend some time with a songwriter I feel like a lot of folks have overlooked. According to the press release, it seems Emma has been sitting with a lot of these songs since the reformation of Lush, but it took some encouragement for her to take them up again as a solo artist. Honestly, this seems like it fits perfectly into the climate of the current times; the texture alone feels like its carefully lifting Emma’s voice into the listener’s ears, filling in everything behind the careful jangle and churns of guitar. It’s crazy too, as this just feels timeless in a sense, like its rooted in nostalgia, yet updated to meet the masses in the middle. Sonic Cathedral will release Pearlies this October.

BDRMM Share Shame Video

I hate to say I love BDRMM as the group are just making a name for themselves by signing to Sonic Cathedral…but dammit, I love the hell out of this song. It teases you, acting like an instrumental, but don’t mind that, you’ll get your lyrics. I love the natural bounce of the song, slowly adding layer upon layer…guitars, atmospherics, percussion, bass…then another guitar comes noodling its way in, tossing its jangling post-punk vibes all over the place. If you want, skip to the 1 minute mark, wait about 20 seconds, and you’ll still get that emotional musical release we’re all seeking; a blast of shoegaze opens the curtains to a fairly empty stage that reveals the matter-of-fact vocal delivery set to the front of the mix while guitars dance about in the distance. Dammit. This band fucks. Look for their If Not, When? EP on October 11th.

Slacker Shoegaze From bdrmm

Hailing from Hull in England, allow me to introduce one of my favorite new upstart groups bdrmm. The band manages to create their very own unique style of slacker, sludge rock combined with just a hint of shoegaze and emo stylings. Take for example this new song “Question Mark” which is a slow burning jam which will draw you in and keep you listening for the full 6 minutes. I’ve hit play upwards of 5 times on this one today and I find myself totally entranced and sucked in. Hope you enjoy it as well.

Fuzzy Pop Number from Linda Guilala

Feel like I haven’t unearthed any Spanish pop music of late, that’s until Sonic Cathedral/Elefant sent this Linda Guilala (band not person) track my way. The band are fresh off the release of 2018’s Psiconautica, so they’ve decided to carry on in 2019 with a slew of really powerful singles. Here we find them delving into their psychedelic tendencies, both in sound and visuals; there’s a heavy ride of fuzz that courses through the vein of this song, but don’t let it fool you, as the pop underbelly is still omnipresent for the duration. The single is out Friday in a limited 7″ format, so get into that!
