Natural Palace Shares HDIF Single

Sitting in my living room, with a planned vacation on tomorrow’s horizon, so I’m totally in vibe mode, ready to just detox from the computer for a minute or three, which is why I love this new Natural Palace tune. I love a good electronic number that’s all about the way it uses this sort of musical scaffolding; the tinkering beat that begins gets an added drum piece, then a skittering electronic noise followed by this haunting echo of a vocal at 30 minutes, allowing more vocal overlapping that thickens the dance waters before a heavier groove drops into flip the track and spin it from club spiritual into club banger. You’ll hear this tune on the group’s new LP, Reeling, dropping on September 20th via Sound as Language.

Flight Mode Sign to Tiny Engines

Perhaps this hit on yesterday’s news cycle, but I’m an avid Flight Mode fan, as I’ve been covering the Norwegian band for several years, even remarking about how their TX ’98 EP sounded exactly like living in Austin during that period. Today, the band announce they’re working with Tiny Engines to put out a compilation of sorts, taking two EPs, plus a brand new one, and putting them all to vinyl! The new EP has its first single below, and it continues to show the growth in the songwriting; it no longer embraces nostalgia, but channels those influences into a sound that sounds effervescent, bubbling over with pop sensibilities! Really excited to hear more new stuff; you can pre-order the LP version right now; The Three Times LP drops on February 2nd!

Tar Of Drop Ey Vayy Single

Feel like I needed something working more towards left-field, so I have been gravitating towards this new single from Tar Of from Brooklyn. I’m tempted here to refer to it as an instrumental piece, although there’s clearly a vocal soundtrack that is the driving force here; it kicks off just before the 30 second mark, pushing the track into this frantic territory. Throughout the track, horns honk in and out, accenting the negative space that works behind that central groove. If you’ve not heard the group, check out their other singles from the forthcoming Confidence Freaks Me Out; its been a definite treat on my end. The LP is out via Sound as Language on October 27th.

Flight Mode Share Twentyfour Single

I’m a big Flight Mode fan, and with the purity of the band’s revisionist Tx ’98 EP, the band landed with Chris Walla for production on their Torshov ’05 EP. This song seems like it has the classic Walla production touch, allowing the verses to wallow in the mellowness before emphatically bursting with a pop hook that swirls in the chorus. Sure, there are tons of bands that pull that off, but perhaps none better than Death Cab back in their heyday with Walla. Maybe that’s just the good songwriting of this Oslo based outfit; their brand new EP will be out next Friday courtesy of Sound as Language.

Flight Mode Share Sixteen

I don’t give a shit what wave of emo we’re in right now; there’s a brand that totally fits into my mind as the purest form (though admittedly it’s probably like 2nd wave). Still, Flight Mode seem like they’re revisiting their own stories to create something nostalgic and new. Listening through this new single, it reminds me of the sort of breakdowns mid-track you’d get from a Bob Nanna-led band like Braid; it packs the same punch too! Still, the vocals from Sjur are a bit softer, which gives a little bit of brevity from the edged rush of guitars. You’ll find this track on the group’s new TX 98′ EP, which drops June 25th via Sound as Language.

Flight Mode Tap Into 90s Emo

There are tons of bands looking back at the emo days, some reimagining, some just trying to pull it off the best they can. For me, Oslo’s Flight Mode are one of the few who seem to pull it off with actual sincerity. I tend to think of bands like Braid and Mineral, before the brand was more pop than rock, when it was fueled by overlapping guitar lines and soft (emotional) vocals. You get that here in this new single from the band’s forthcoming Tx ’98 EP, which is where singer Sjur was living, and I was too, so perhaps that’s why I’m tapping into his nostalgic revisiting; the EP is being released by Sound as Language on June 25th.

Sloping Shares Raft Single

I was a big fan of JJ Posway’s writing when he was part of Scooterbabe, but he’s now moved onto his new project Sloping. His songwriting chops are still intact, though these songs are meant to have a more organic feel to them; it’s very similar to what our own Gabe Hascall is doing. At times, the vocals sound like a whisper, struggling to get out into the world; the mix brings the strum down, lulling you into a hushed gentleness. It’s a really nice little ballad, definitely giving off this intimate bedroom listening experience, which is perfect for a day alone with just you and your headphones. Look for Completed Songs to drop on February 26th via Sound as Language.
