Get Weird with Alien Tango

I find myself inexplicably addicted to Alien Tango. There’s definitely an oddball sense of humor, in both the song’s construction and the video work we present you below. But, peel back some of the oddity and you’ll hear some really exciting things going on in the work of Alberto Garcia Roca. The beat here has this forceful video game punch to it, bordering on glitchy; these electronic sounds get layered upon one another, yanked back from time to time to reveal these marvelously intoxicating melodies. It honestly reminds me of when I fist fell into Animal Collective and found them super-exciting; I get those same vibes, do you?

Indiepop from The Royal Landscaping Society

I was lucky enough to find that new Azure Blue release from Matinee Recordings last Friday, and the esteemed indiepop label has turned around and shared another new gem, this time from The Royal Landscaping Society. It’s going to be hard not to listen to this on repeat as often as one can; it offers up this dreamy guitar line that mixes it up with this deep tone and sharp percussive element, the sort that makes the dream pop/shoegaze kids swoon. Then comes the voice, bringing in a calming melody that doesn’t really go too far outside the song’s comfort zone…until the 2:12 mark (and the 3:16 mark). Here, the keyboards rise in, a strummed guitar line is apparent and the vocals swell, just a smidge. I’m so in love with this track. Keep your eyes peeled for a 7″ later this year on Matinee.

Pop Number from Senalada

Perhaps my greatest joy in 2019 is just letting go of trying to follow trends or be in the loop, and instead focus on finding the joys in what I already know I love…like Spanish pop tunes. Senalada has this amazing new single that I think you’ll like, and if not, eh, sorry. There’s that slight dreamy tone to the guitar, matched by this wispy vocal before percussion kicks in and the guitar dances down the yellow brick road. The breathiness of the voice really hits home; it’s like every last breath is being given forth for the sake of the listener. This is a great one-off single for those that missed out on Mejores Amigos via Discos de Kirlian.

Fuzzy Pop Number from Linda Guilala

Feel like I haven’t unearthed any Spanish pop music of late, that’s until Sonic Cathedral/Elefant sent this Linda Guilala (band not person) track my way. The band are fresh off the release of 2018’s Psiconautica, so they’ve decided to carry on in 2019 with a slew of really powerful singles. Here we find them delving into their psychedelic tendencies, both in sound and visuals; there’s a heavy ride of fuzz that courses through the vein of this song, but don’t let it fool you, as the pop underbelly is still omnipresent for the duration. The single is out Friday in a limited 7″ format, so get into that!

Selvatica Drop New Album

Over the last several years I’ve turned to Discos de Kirlian and Pretty Olivia Records for a look into the world of Spanish indie rock. Today I’m here with a new track from Selvatica who just dropped Macumba via Discos de Kirlian. There’s this natural tension that exists during the verses, the guitar working over strings carefully before the distortion gets turned up. Each time the guitars blast and recede, I’m disoriented in the best way possible; it all ends in a euphoric burst that crests and crashes through your speakers. Tired of monolingual indie rock? Then turn this one up loud. Macumba is out now!

Dreamy Jangle Pop from No Fucks

No Fucks might not be on your radar as of yet, but hey, no fucks given, right? The Spanish outfit is a two piece band, brandishing little more than fuzzy guitars that twinkle through your speakers, matched with that bounding rhythm that encourages most folks to get out of their chairs and have a little bit of fun. I love the way they draw things out just near the 1 minute mark, before adding a little bit more emphasis on their heavy euphoria. As of right now, the group just have this single and its B-Side hanging out in the world, but word has it that Discos de Kirlian will be helping with a full-length come February.

Catching Up with Discos de Kirlian

As a fan of the indiepop genre, I try my best to always browse the web searching for things to share…which led me to Discos de Kirlian, long ago. Today the label just quietly dropped two new releases in our lap, and why not visit some of the best in Spanish indiepop. The first bit comes from Senalada, finding that perfect middle ground between twee and electronica; I love the acoustic guitar at work here. On the other side we have this charming ditty from Cosmo K.; it’s brevity helps you sink your teeth in immediately, then return to lap up all the joy all over again. Spend Some Time with Meritorio Records

Perhaps the greatest thing about running this site are all the obscure labels that have reached out that have either become friends or shown me the way to new music. Spain’s Meritorio Records is one such label, and they’ve had a pretty incredible 2018…so let’s reflect on that a little bit. March saw them release a great new Stephen’s Shore album, for those already familiar with one of indiepop’s finest. Then, they turned their attention to New York’s Holy Tunics, dropping Butter Dish; it’s al album brimming with guitar pop genius that you’ll revisit time and time again. Oh, and they’re not stopping, having just released the brand new LP from Poppel…seriously, just listen to this band! Hopefully, if you haven’t heard from Meritorio before, you’ll spend some time with their recent releases below.



Striking Track from Odina

Let’s get it out of the way, there’s an immediate comparison to Odina; yes, she does resemble early Joanna Newsom in her vocal delivery. But, for me, that’s where the comparison stops, and a new star shines. There’s this intimacy in her voice, almost as if we’re sitting right in the studio as she records this tune. It doesn’t hurt that the arrangements behind her are stunning, embellishing her notes with billowing horns that rise to meet her voice. This tune will appear on her forthcoming EP, which is scheduled to drop at some point this summer.

Get On This Terry vs Tori EP

Not sure why no one alerted me to this, but hot damn if this Terry vs Tori EP from back in January isn’t just the perfect midweek snack. The Spanish four piece sort of plays all over the indiepop map; “Larusso” seems like something every band’s been trying to capture, jangling and melodic; it’s followed behind by “Parallel Lines,” which brings in more of a dreamy element into the fold. All these things are great, and I just wish I knew about the band beforehand, as I feel like I’ve been missing out on quality listening time. Grab the remaining copies from Box Bedroom Rebels (you can grab me one while you’re at it!).
