Soot Sprite Share Vicious Cycles

We’ve obviously been keeping an eye on Soot Sprite this year, as they’ll drop their new LP in early May, and yet, I feel like I haven’t been quite able to put their power into words. Early singles remind me of Weakened Friends, whom we adore, but this new one seems to embrace being a huge modern rock band, and I say that with whole-hearted belief that that’s a good thing. Immediacy gets traded in and out for these carefully crawling vocals and guitar lines, suspended in air, only to smash into the listener at the 1 minute mark. Still, where they could easily force bombast and braggadocio on audiences, their initial chorus is subtle and reflective, perhaps tied to the conversation on the lyrical side of things. Wield Your Hope Like a Weapon is out on May 16th via Specialist Subject Records.

Soot Sprite Release Days After Days

If you haven’t penciled in Soot Sprite just yet, you’re going to want to make room for the group in your listening rotation, as their debut continues it’s promising foray into the singles cycle. While the music revolves around the crest and fall bit of modern indie rock, Elise Cook’s voice offers the perfect gravitational pull for listeners. At its peak, it’s bold and powerful, crashing into you as equally loud as the guitars ringing out behind. But, there are a few delighting moments when she pulls back, building in a kinder texture that shows her vocal control. Another single in the books that’s going to make Wield Your Hope Like a Weapon a stellar debut release; it hits on May 16th via Specialist Subject Records.

Big Mess Cover Kirsty MacColl’s Terry + Prep New EP

You might not be super familiar with Kirsty MacColl’s 80s hit “Terry,” but once you get a listen to this Big Mess cover version, you’re going to rush right over to compare it with the original. Both songs are filled with a bit of a saccharine nod, but only the Danish outfit can ramp it up properly, turning the song into a swooning power-pop hit deluxe! They drop in extra guitar-mony hooks and crank the speed to maximum velocity, which often times makes this version feel like Martha at their best! This song appears on the new Terry EP, which will be out with the band on their April UK tour, courtesy of Specialist Subject Records.

Soot Sprite Share All My Friends Are Depressed

Overseas, there’s lots of buzz about Soot Sprite, and while they might have their own issues, their new single seems fitting for the majority of Americans that are currently burdened by stress and fear. The song doesn’t offer up the perfect solution, other than to “change what you can” as you move through life. I guess at a certain point you can let go of what you can’t change and work on the small things around you, like cranking up this tune at just the right time to let it rattle your speakers. They seduce you with a subtle bit of pop rock, subdued in its presentation before erupting with this great force that gives you the courage to step out into the world and kick some ass. Their debut LP, Wield Your Hope Like a Weapon will be out on May 16th via Specialist Subject Records.

Don’t Worry Share Ever So Clear

As they celebrate ten years together (Congrats!), Essek outfit Don’t Worry went back into the studio to reflect on the mark, and came out with this power ballad, a reflection on seeing your whole self, “ugly bits and all.” I can’t help but to fall for the vocals here, landing somewhere between Americana and British pop, albeit with a bit of punk flare. Still, the song works through the melody, filling in the space behind with cascading guitar riffs and joyous backing vocal notes. It’s all about pulling the emotion out of every note, which is where the group have excelled over past years, so crank it up! Courtesy of Specialist Subject.

Hamburger Offer Quick Pop Ditty

Bristol pop rockers Hamburger have a new EP rearing to go before the year comes to a close, and why not give it a little love by sharing this grungy pop number. It opens with stretching vocals and a bounding bit of keyboard work, and then the hooks drop into the show. The guitars match up with the bounce of the piano, and you’re hit with a crunchy bit of grunge-pop, blasting you with this melodic powerhouse before receding back to where they came from. Beat Back the Ghouls is going to offer up a lot of joy when it hits on November 29th, courtesy of the fine people over at Specialist Subject Records.

Supermilk Share Many Thanks Single

If you need an energy injection to get through today, might we encourage you to turn the knob on your stereo up a little louder as you indulge in this new track from Supermilk. On this new single, the London outfit are channeling that sort of sharply bobbing brand of punk, punctuating riff work so as to create a bit of a natural dance. The chorus bites a little heavier, giving off a bit of a drive that maximizes the noise capacity. For my two cents, I love the vocal delivery, particularly when the notes stretch into higher octaves, reminiscent of Futureheads and the way they almost made punk rock sound like a chorale group. The band will release High Precision Ghosts on August 9th via Specialist Subject Records.

Soot Sprite Share I Went Swimming

Over in the UK, Specialist Subject Records have been dropping some fire over the last few years; they’ve been behind various releases from Witching Waves, Fresh, Martha and more…and now there’s Soot Sprite. Songwriter Elise Cook takes on the subject of shutting down amidst signs of a trouble in a relationship; the dark subject matter fits perfectly as the band wrap their torrent of distorted guitars upon the listener. Cook’s voice sails throughout, occasionally recoiling, as one might be wont to do in a relationship. A powerfully abrasive jam with a pop rock center, be sure to look for the group’s new 7″, which drops July 26th.

Cosmit Release Brand New EP

I want you to get up and out of your chair and pump those fists today, and what better way by giving you a listen to the brand new Cosmit EP that just dropped this morning. Their sound fuses tons of elements from the like of pop punk to garage to soul, but I won’t lie if there’s not a feeling of nostalgia that’s pulling me into this track. Opening tune “Punisher” almost feels like a British take on Sparta, while “Hard Love” has a bit more swagger and suggestive pop inclination, so you can flip the coin and just have a blast with this blaring through your speakers. Still Cosmit EP is out today via Specialist Subject Records.

Fresh Share Merch Girl + Announce EP

If you didn’t listen to 2002’s Raise Hell, might I implore you to go back and check out Fresh‘s last LP before completely diving into the new track. That said, it won’t be easy, as this new tune has all the reasons to fall head over heels for the group. There’s plenty of bite and tenacity in the guitar sound, which bleeds into the vocals too. I found Kathryn Woods’ ferocious performance perfectly fitting, allowing the faintest melodic hint to slide beneath the surface to seduce pop rock fans. They’ll be releasing their new Merch Girl EP on April 19th via Get Better Records/Specialist Subject Records.
