Holy Wave Share New Single

If I went back about ten years to the first time we heard Holy Wave, I’ll be honest, I might not have expected them to end up where they are now, musically stepping outside of the traditional psych realm they long championed as part of the Austin scene. Their latest track, seems like you’ve taken some nod to a jazz-infused krautrock and blended it with the foggy atmospheric pop of acts like the Clientele; it feels like a track perfect for a day drenched in rain and clouds (something we’re not quite accustomed to down here in Austin!). My fascination really circles this incredible rhythm pulse it gives the song this thick life that allows the rest of the tune to swell and ebb; it’s a beautiful piece that has us really excited for Five of Cups, which is out August 4th via Suicide Squeeze. The 1981 Share Make It Right Video

We’ve covered lots of stuff from Dandy Boy Records the past few years, and the 1981 are definitely an act I think we’re going to get behind. Honestly, I loved the way the song started out, using this brooding darkness with light guitar jangles to turn in my ear; it set up the song perfectly for the vocals to have their first entry, almost like a ghostly whisper through your speaker. But, after the 1 minute mark, the song takes a turn into this more blissful pop structure; it’s like a sedated power pop moment, completely sealing this song as an absolute hit. Give me a hook, wash it in synths, then throw in an emphatic power piece at the end to add some emphasis? Yeah, I’m in. Move On is out August 18th.

Pia Fraus Release Sunny Afternoon Single

For a band so rooted in the Estonian rock scene, it’s been really great listening to all the various changes in the sounds of the new Pia Fraus record. Sure, I can hear where their latest “Sunny Afternoon” flirts with bits of dream pop or even that sort of psychedelic tinged pop (a la Stereolab). But, even with those nods, which mostly come from the musical element, the track takes on a jazzier bit of focus, spinning into this grand territory where you feel like you’re just sailing away on vacation, drifting out to see with nothing but the sun on your back. Can’t wait to hear it all pieced together when they drop Evening Colours on July 28th via Seksound.

I’m sure you missed our weekly re-runs of all the fun stuff we post, but I was on vacation! So, I hurried this week to play catch up on all those tunes, then hurried with RayRay to get them up for your ears. We had tons of stuff covered, from ATX faves A Giant Dog to a premiere of the new track from Pretty in Pink; there was nothing short of a bunch of bangers to run…and some aren’t even up on the DSPs, so we couldn’t get those in the list. Dippers Share Recurrent Sight

Through their first EP and the following singles, I’ve been way on board with what Dippers have been doing since rebranding themselves. That said, this new single, the last before they drop Clastic Rock, might be the best thing they’ve done to date. Matthew Ford gives one of his best vocal performances thus far, and something about the relaxed jangling of the track just fits right into my musical wheelhouse. But, for all the sweetness and hooks, the group continue to explore the sonic realm, as they take on a little freakout in the track’s latter half. Clastic Rock is out August 4th via Goner Records/Tenth Court.

Nate Dionne Drops Drawn On Single

Longtime Philly (thought currently in Connecticut) musician Nate Dionne is definitely making bold steps with his forthcoming Fantasy LP, and this new track finds him sort of all over the place in the best way. I feel like this ballad strum that opens the tune set me up perfectly, stretching the tune before fuzzed out riffs jump into the picture and everything gets instantly more full in the speakers. That heavy vibe constantly is fighting with the melodic nature that Dionne creates; the song’s latter half takes that and pushes it even further with a whole of musicianship flexing. Fantasy will be released on July 25th via Gentle Reminder Records.

Soft Science Share Single, Announce New LP

What a great day to return from a minor surgery to find fresh Soft Science music to spin for you. Personally, the band brandish my favorite style of the indiepop realm; it’s equal parts dreamy/gazey and jangly, giving the song this sort of mellow drift that’s pushed forward by the punching rhythm. You can feel the guitars grab you by the neck and swirl you about in the air, only to get caught in some magical gust that carries you to find what dreams may come. You’ll either get caught up daydreaming, or put this on a playlist for a drive under the night sky, but either way you’ll be a winner if you grab this from Shelflife Records; Lines is officially out on September 8th.

Stream EP from the Goods

It seems like everywhere you go nowadays, things are hot and only getting hotter. But, you can always hop in (or on) your ride and roll those windows down to catch a breeze. If you need the soundtrack for that though, you’d better turn on EP from the Goods. It’s a four song collection of huge riffs and sunshine filled melodies that will certainly make flying through the summertime a little bit more enjoyable. Rob Good’s playing definitely brings about those bright bits, but Paul Wiseman’s drum work through the EP gives a strong punch of energy to go along with the anthemic nature of what’s at play. Body Double Share Carnation Island

When I turned on this Body Double single, I immediately thought it was going to be this heavy piece of cold post-punk. Sure, the first 40 seconds or so does feel like that, with this sort of industrial underbelly running through the track. But, get past that point and the tune opens up into this broad bit of hook-laden pop; the song soars in the chorus, bringing about this huge melodic rush to your eras. It’s the perfect juxtaposition too, letting the song bounce back and forth before it euphorically bounds to a punching close. If you’re digging on it, the tune is on their new Voice 2 Skull EP, out July 21st via Zum.

Pretty In Pink Share Star Video

One has to have something pretty remarkable at hand in order to completely captivate a listener by stripping a track of traditional percussive elements. In fact, Pretty in Pink really operate their latest single with little more than guitar lines and these heavenly vocals that seem to sway back and forth through your speakers, like the wind blowing across tall plains grasses. For me, I had to take a deep breath as soon as I heard the jangling guitar line dance against the quieted strum behind it; I knew I was in for something supremely moving. Those guitar lines don’t stray from one another as the tune unfolds, blanketing the tune in intertwined DIY ethos. Those vocals though, have the power to carry you on their wings, drift you off into this magical land where everything blankets you with warmth; I like the nice touch too when all three members combine near the song’s end, deepening the song’s magic. You’ll hear this track on the group’s next LP, Pillows, out in September via Little Lunch/Hidden Bay/Subjangle.
