CLAMM Share Monday Video

If you’re feeling anxious, this new CLAMM thing is going to be the perfect catharsis or it’s going to set you off…either way, it’s a ripper that you should play at the loudest volume possible. Feedback and thunderous drum work open the song before this dangerously frantic guitar line starts to wiggle its way into the picture. That angular cut at such pace creates this sort of ominous bounce to it, setting up the double barrage of vocals we get from the trio here. They rip through, and the video adds an extra layer as they seem to be barking directly at us, only increasing the feeling of the knife’s edge that runs throughout the track. Their new album Care is going to blast into our lives on August 19th, courtesy of Chapter Music/Meat Machine.

Blue Cove Share Thrive Single

I’ve written about Chicago’s Blue Cove previously, and with another single floating out there, I wanted to be sure it got some love from me. This track begins with a really nice vocal working over a lightly strummed guitar, setting you up for the drop in around the 50 second mark. It’s here that the song transcends the opening and begins to churn the music into something more akin to the dreamier realms of pop music we found on their first single. Throughout, the vocals continue to wash against your speakers, constantly hitting you with those hazy notes that encourage your midweek daydreams.

Sorry I Missed It: The Garbage and the Flowers

It’s been a slow start to the week, which probably means I’m missing all the hot tracks while I teach summer school. But, before I start running that class, I wanted to get this Cinnamon Sea EP up from The Garbage and the Flowers, which came out in Australia in the middle of May. Those of you in the need for some slow-core magic will surely fall for the band’s mixture of Velvet Underground weepers and haphazard pop numbers that you’d find on an old K Records sampler. It’s five genius tracks that I’ve been spinning for the last couple of weeks, so why not turn you that way today. Check it.

Tim Burgess Shares Typical Music

Not going to lie here. I went through 97 emails of songs released today, or songs I should be into, and not one hit, not until I got to the end of the stretch and hit on this Tim Burgess track. It should come as no surprise, seeing as I’m a big Charlatans fan, that I’d adore his recent work. It seems like his solo stuff has only grown in quality through his albums. I mean, here, I’m just happily bopping my head and spinning around to the chorus of this tune; something about his work just feels so light-hearted and playful, and therein lies the charm that I keep coming back to time and time again. Typical Music is out in September via Bella Union.

Catching Up on the Austin Scene: Adrian Quesada, Queen Serene + More

It’s been a busy few weeks down here in Texas, musically speaking, with tons of stuff getting released left and right, so wanted to be sure we got some news out that we’re stoked to jam to as of late.

Adrian Quesada – Boleros Psicodelicos

Adrian’s work is central to Austin’s heartbeat at the moment, be it Black Pumas or his other projects. As a huge fan of traditional boleros, and psychedelic music, this combination of the two is hitting right in the sweet spot. Plus, it’s getting picked up by every NPR station, so you know your dad and his friends will be talking about it.

Queen Serene – Better Things/Waiting Room

This band is one of the more exciting recent bands to pop up on the Austin radar, and their live set matches the jams. They just recently dropped this tasty 2 song morsel for our ears, and “Better Things” frantic art-punk energy is the perfect little jam for your day.

Chronophage – Self-Titled LP

If I were to vote for my favorite listen this last week, it would be the new LP from Chronophage. Interestingly, they’ve taken their darkness and turned into this broad sweeping pop that seems fit for the underground sounds of the 80s. You gotta listen!

Charley Horse – Summer EP

This group is the new project of our old friend Kevin Cavanaugh, and his new outfit is hitting the perfect guitar pop vibes on this one; I keep coming back to an early Surfer Blood comparison. Check out their brand new 4 tune EP!

 

The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness Share Turning Red

Some pop music is written for the moment, but then other pop songwriters go about their business writing timeless pop tunes, just like the track below from The Boys with the Perpetual Nervousness. I don’t know whether it’s the perfect guitar jangle notes ringing out with that percussive stomp behind or whether it belongs to the comforting curl of the warm vocals, but I don’t think there’s a single person who’d turn this track off. It’s living somewhere in that perfect place between our love for bands like Teenage Fanclub and Nada Surf, so if that’s your bag, then you’re going to want to grab Third Wave Of… from Bobo Integral/Tear Jerk.

Cusp Share I Know Single via Open Tab

Fire Talk have been crushing it with their Open Tab project, dropping in a single here and there from new(ish) acts, with a little profile piece to go along with each release. This latest tune from Cusp is a tasty little morsel that I had to share with you immediately. What got me excited was the way the band are balancing their work, sonically speaking. Jen Bender’s vocals are great, hitting on the modern sort of pop rock tones we adore, but the guitar work behind has a heavier hand; it has a tendency to bring in these melodic crashing waves, churning the song into a mixture of noise and pop sensibility. The perfect execution has me swooning, and hopefully you as well!

Stream Team Play’s Debut Album, Wishes and Desires

There’s always a soft spot in my heart for really moving pop music, such as you’ll find in the debut album from Finland’s Team Play. The duo have called this collection “gothic hymns,” celebrating the voice of humanity; the whole of the record is really about the vocal interplay between Minja and Tapio, combining and overlapping one another as they music fills in the empty spaces behind them. “Sunrise” has this beautiful rolling opening moment that sets you up to fall in love with the brooding emotions. Personally, I keep going back to “Foggy Night,” which sparkles with this delicateness that seems unparalleled in the current climate. Wishes and Desires is available today from Soliti Music.

Wilder Maker Announce Male Models

We’ve been covering Wilder Maker for several years now, and I’m really excited with their new album, Male Models, being announced, courtesy of our friends over at Western Vinyl. Gabe Birnbaum’s songwriting and lyricism is something we should all cherish, but what they’re doing in this track really sees the band hitting their musical stride as a whole…with an added bonus performance by Katie Von Schleicher. In a way, it reminds me a lot of the Glands or something in Jason Lytle’s solo catalog; it’s rooted in this almost Southern spirit, tinged with boogie, but not afraid to try and push those boundaries into weird pop realms. Male Models drops on July 29th.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults Share Slow Magic Remix

Earlier this year, our friends in Letting Up Despite Great Faults dropped their album IV, the first LP from the group in ten years; we’ve written extensively about the new album, but today, they’re sharing a Remix EP, with this Slow Magic version of “Corners Pressed” being one of the standout tracks. Instead of the heavenly jangles, the electronic element gets the highlight here, giving the song more of a driving force, as opposed to the dreaminess of the original. It’s like a perfect reimagining of the record, and one can only marvel out how perfectly these pieces all seem to fit together. The IV Remixes EP is available to jam out to, today!
