Hearts and Rockets Share Buy It Video

Looking through our emails this weekend, I was stoked to see that our friends over at Psychic Hysteria had sent us a new video from Hearts and Rockets for their single “Buy It.” The tune itself is a driving bit of garage pop; there’s a definite bit of attitude, but the rhythm of the song allows you tap your toes and enjoy your own personal listening party. Guitar lines cutting through and offering a bit of sonic dissonance illustrate just how perfectly the Melbourne duo walk the line between edgy art and pop tendencies. If you’re doubting me, check out the TV is Boring EP, which features this jam below!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (5.9 – 5.13)

You’ve waited all weekend for the quick and easy recap of all the sweet tunes we hit up last week. We started off the week really strong with a bunch of stuff, but somehow, it feels like we kind of sputtered to a close, just sprinkling a tune here and there. Still, we managed to get 20 great tunes you should enjoy in your first hour of the morning. We start it off with the absolute banger from Say Sue Me, then have some more experimental works from the likes of Sinaive and Double Vanity. Plus, we’ve got a new track from our friend Lizzy Lehman produced by S. Houser and Jim Eno of Spoon. Turn it up and get your day started.

Double Vanity Share Night Moves Single

In need of a contemplative single that can take you back to the days of Cocteau Twins or Siouxsie solo work? Well, then perhaps you’ll want to dip your toes into this stunning new tune from Melourne’s Double Vanity. Zec Zechner’s voice is surely the central focus; you are drawn to the majesty that it presents throughout, with moments that feel like the notes could shatter before your ears. But, for me, the song’s success relies upon the dense textures created behind that voice. The wash of synth atop the beats set the ground for these crystalline guitar notes to knife their way through here and there. Tell me you don’t love it.

Sun Spots Share Loosey Video

Feels like a weird week around here. There were tons of jams coming left and right, then radio silence. Maybe I made the world mad mocking Stereogum? Well, luckily this punky piece of pop came through from Sun Spots and it absolutely rips. Thinking about modern trends, the Seattle outfit seems to rely more on the rock ethos than the pop bit, though the chorus certainly doesn’t shy away from an absolute stellar hook to get you turned on out there. Loud, boisterous…and fun? You can count me in. The group release their Loosey EP this Fall via Happy Families.

100% Share Abandon Single

Australia’s synth pop outfit 100% are set to release their debut album pretty soon here, so they’ve decided to entice us with this heavy darkwave track so we can be prepared. “Abandon” is a mixture of beats and synth washes to create this cavernous background that hangs just behind the vocals. For their part, the vocals are emphatic in their delivery, punching in a sense, though mixed in with the musical elements, they’re likely to entrance you, beckoning you into the tune like haunting sirens. Maybe it’s a little dark for your morning, but wanted to keep you in the know so you can be on the lookout for Clear Visions when it drops later this year via It Records.

Plastic Mirror Share Tenterhooks Video

When you’re dropping Beach House and Cocteau Twins references, you’re generally going to get a listen from me. Such was the case when I came across this new track from Plastic Mirror, and I’m glad I took the time here, as the tune will surely reward those with similar tastes. For this track, I’m feeling more of the Beach House vibe, with the duo letting the song takes its own approach to the opens space the guitars and drums create. In the chorus, you get a nice hook, though it doesn’t feel too obvious, playing off the dreaminess just a bit more. It’s early, and the perfect place to indulge your dreams, so turn this tune on and enjoy.

R.E. Seraphin Announces New EP

Long ago, RE Seraphin was a powerhouse Austin musician, but feeling the call, he moved out to the San Francisco area, where he’s been fortunate to polish up his stomping power pop sounds. We’re stoked to point you in the direction of the new Swingshift EP, which is dropping late this month via Dandy Boy/Mt. St. Mtn/Safe Suburban Homes. This is an interesting effort, featuring the constant drum stomp that serves as the song’s foundation. From there, the tune hangs on an almost garage vibe, though you can’t help but feel the Bay Area pop goodness shining through there, particularly as the song moves into the chorus, which wouldn’t seem too far out of line on a Papercuts LP. Stoked for R.E and company; the EP drops on May 27th.

Wombo Announce Fairy Rust LP

Wombo were one of the top 5 bands on my list to catch during SXSW, and their songs live were pretty spectacular, so I’m stoked to finally hear the news of their new Fairy Rust LP. It’s not a far cry from what’s going on in the indie sphere, bringing a bit of that sort of indifferent vocal drawl into angular post-rock grooves. I think listening to the rhythm section, it’s clear that the band build up this natural anxiousness; they always feel on the cusp of breaking out into something chaotic, though as we see here, Sydney Chadwick tethers them to more atmospheric realms. Excited to hear what all Fairy Rust has to offer; it’s out July 29th via Fire Talk.

Say Sue Me Share No Real Place Single

South Korea’s Say Sue Me has written a lot of great tracks over the years, but for my ears, this might be one of the tops, if not THE top. I love the energetic roll in that begins immediately, with Sumi’s voice hitting you right away, speedily delivering the relatable lyrical content about missing someone. There’s this natural hook that’s superseding everything else around the song, but that doesn’t mean that the thumping drums or the dancing guitar work go unnoticed; it’s just hard to focus as you’re so seduced by the incessant joy jumping through your speakers. The band release The Last Thing Left this Friday via Damnably!

Sinaive Prep Super 45 t.

French group Sinaive are crafting this perfectly fuzzy brand of pop that has me on the edge of my seat as I wait for their new Super 45 t. EP. Opening up with this wall of scuzzy fuzzy guitars immediately captures my attention. From there it turns right into something cozy and warm, with the melodies mingling together to create this wonder-world of daydreaming. Few band really capture the perfect balance between noise and pop elements as perfectly as this French quartet do. Plus, they’re releasing their EP with one of my favorite labels, Hidden Bay Records (also Arvo Disques/Hellzapoppin Records); the whole EP drops at the end of May, but you can get seduced right below!
