Joe McKee Releases New Single

Perhaps I’m stuck on ballads today, or slow burners, but regardless, I’m really enjoying this new tune from Joe McKee. The song revolves around a solitary guitar line turning and walking wherever McKee leads it; it slowly drips with emotive qualities, accented by tinkering piano notes creeping in from the back of the room somewhere. The song works perfectly with the video, as both end in this sort of beautiful isolation, a happy loneliness if you will. Joe will release An Australian Alien this October via Baby Race Records.

Lovely Pop Tune from Gregor

The Australian music scene is more than just those bright ringing guitars, so today we’ll turn our attention to the beautiful croon of Gregor. He’s preparing to release his debut album, and he’s shared this subtle number; it’s little more than voice, bass groove and a wash of keyboard sounds. It feels like a late night walk through a brightly lit street, capturing elements of darkness and light all at once; it’s pretty intoxicating upon repeat listens. The chorus barely steps out of line with the song, but you’ll notice a slight tonal change that only adds to the emotive power. Silver Drop is being released on October 5th via Chapter Music.

Another Track from the Shifters

If you weren’t convinced by the first single from The Shifters we shared with you, then perhaps you’ll realize what you’ve been missing with their latest. Listening through again and again, the song works like a polished version of Television Personalities; it employs bits of humor and constant melody. The chorus offers a nice turn in the track, utilizing backing vocals to further entice listeners with pop sensibility. For me, the band’s success (and its on display in this video) is that there’s a sense of enjoyment that seeps through your speakers; you can feel the band having a blast, perhaps leading to you sharing the same sentiment in listening. Have a Cunning Plan is out September 21st via Trouble In Mind.

ATX Spotlight: Ben Millburn Preps Sunglass Moustache

The best thing about Ben Millburn is that very few acts, if any, sound anything like him here in Austin; that should bode well here, and hopefully beyond city limits. It would be easy to pigeon-hole this brand new single as something akin to psychedelia, and while I see that, there’s also this jazzier funk that underlies. Wrap that up in a blanket of pop influences and you get this amalgam of sonic touchstones that takes you on a journey into the future of music. You’ll find this number on the band’s new album, Sunglass Moustache, which the band are self-releasing on September 14th. Enjoy your own spaced out musical adventure below!

Beach House Play ACL Live Tonight

If you’ve been reading any of the ridiculous mid-year album lists (of which I made my own) you’ll likely notice a trend among all lists…that trend being that Beach House‘s latest album 7 is high upon the list. Sub Pop dropped the album in May, and it’s amassed continuous buzz and support since it dropped; tonight you’ll get a chance to catch the group at ACL LIVE. Honestly, I can’t think of a venue more fit to host a dreamy set by the group; the lighting alone will do wonders for the performance. Ed Schrader’s Music Beat will be opening the night around 8 PM; so be sure you’re there in time to catch Beach House take the stage just after 9.

Late Night Pop Number from Das Kope

I’ve already been impressed by the work of Brazilian (now LA-based) songwriter Das Kope, and I’m really glad he’s returned so quickly with another tune. This number is a little bit more of a sultry late night pop number; there’s a funky little guitar line that gives you a toe-tapping groove, while the vocal wash is coated in this hazy vibe…perhaps alluding to the smog of LAX. Still no word on when, and if, we’ll get a formal release from the producer, but if he’s still throwing out hits like the one below, I’m on board.

Goodbye to Growl

Back in 2017 we were lucky to release Won’t You, the debut full-length from Austin’s Growl. I’d been following the band for quite some time, so I considered it a monumental achievement in its own right; I couldn’t be more proud of that record. But, there comes a time when you let go of the things you love…and as such, we big a fond farewell to Growl, who are currently calling it a day due to life changes amongst the band. Kent, Austin’s best drummer, is off to grad-school…Jon is headed to Seattle then to Sweden for the time being. In honor of their happy closing, we’re pleased to share the following video. It was shot by Ryan Sax while the band was touring throughout the States; you can hear a beautiful acoustic version of “Passerby” and a live version of “Duck Sauce” from their LP (you can buy it HERE); it does a really great job of capturing the spirit of the group, one of the many reasons we were fortunate to work with them. We wish both Kent and Jon the best as they depart; Austin will have a huge hole where the boys in Growl have gone on to adventures unknown.

Generifus Returns with New EP

Generifus just dropped Free Ways back in March, and Spencer Sult is ready to return with a new EP under his belt. He returns with this slinky ballad, strolling through your speakers without a care in the world. There’s a strong backbone of keys and electronics, which allows Sult the room to let his voice do the work to draw in the listener; he’s accompanied just beneath the mix by Anna Jeter of Ancient Pools. The middling track solo is a nice little touch to add some flesh to the tune…not that that’s needed. Suit reminds me of a slightly happier Greg Ashley, which is a high compliment on my end. Look for And of an Era to drop this Friday.

Hear Another Spiritualized Single

There’s just something in the craft of J. Spaceman that makes me come back again and again, especially now that he’s really been focused on this swelling style of Western americana. On this round, we find him right at home, almost resting in the midst of some vast expanse of musical landscape. Because it’s Spiritualized, there are, of course, added textural elements from like horns and strings, not to mention this vibrating electronic note that runs through the background…and those backing vocals only sweeten the deal. And Nothing Hurt will drop on September 7th via Fat Possum.

Parrot Dream Drop Another Single

In just about a month, Parrot Dream will finally release their debut album, Light Goes, and they’re slowly letting singles trickle into the world. On the latest single, they open the song with an almost post-rock aesthetic, focusing on the crisp guitar sounds that spin around in step with the rhythm section. It’s not until the first minute has finished that you get to meet the band’s dream pop persona, introducing a wash of keyboards and warm vocals that ride the natural melody to the song’s end. It’s another nice entry into the band’s catalog, so if you’re interested, be sure to grab it from Good Eye Records on August 24th.
