New Single from Marrow

marrowFriday’s are great for feel-good jams, and I think this new single from Marrow fits perfectly into that slot. The band just announced a slew of touring dates for early 2016, which includes an Austin date on January 31st (at Lamberts). In order to promote their album, The Gold Standard, and their tour, they’re offering up this sweet track. I love how it feels like a very groovy pop track, but beneath the powerful voice of Macie Stewart is a band doing their best to bring out the group’s rocking aesthetic. If you turn the mix another way, this track could easily break through some speakers. Enjoy your Friday good vibes.

The Shivas Are Back with a New Album

shivaI’ve been on the Shivas train for quite some time, and I’m rather surprised at how quickly they’ve returned considering they were just rocking their last album less than a year ago. This track, however, might catch a few off-guard, offering a smooth Western-tinged ballad that brims with soulful vocals. Sure, lacking in the punch and hooks they’ve offered before, but the song builds in such a way that it’s hard for listeners to turn this thing off. It’s a song of maturity and growth, giving us a glimmer of what we should expect on the band’s new LP, Better Off Dead, which is being released on February 9th via K Records.

Digging Oakland Health Academy A Great Deal

dreamA short while ago, I wrote about Oakland Health Academy due to their 7″ on Emotional Response, but since going back, I’ve really been enjoying the band’s Dream Palace album…released in September. The album itself offers a lot of differentiation; “About a Friend” sounds like a long lost Guided by Voices tune, then there’s the bedroom ballad of “She’s a Ghost” to charm your heart. Feels like there’s something for everyone in here, so I figured I’d share it with you to encourage some good mid-day listening times. Happy day to you. New Music from Michael Nau

Erika_12JKT EPS_r4Just because Cotton Jones haven’t released anything in a few years, it hasn’t slowed down the writing process for Michael Nau. He’s just announced that he’ll be releasing his new album, Mowing, under his own name, though all indications point to the help from his Cotton Jones crew. His approach on this first single seems to be one of really relaxed folk-influenced indie rock. There’s a slight swing in the guitar chords, almost implying a soulful feel to the track, met by his soothing vocals. Maybe this is the slow jam of the year. Look for his new record via Suicide Squeeze Records on February 19th.

Austin Spotlight: Another Grape St. Hit

Grape St.Remember when we put out that first Grape St. LP? Yeah, that was pretty sweet. But, the band have since gone on to release their latest album, this time with Burger Records. The album is titled Wallpaper, and if anything, it’s another assured dosage of garage pop power from Curtis O’ Mara. Listen to this new single they just tossed up to support their mini West Coast tour; it has long been a staple of their live show, and I have a feeling you’ll dig hearing it in the recorded version. Come Back to Me Rob Crow

rcgpEvery music fan has that one band, or several bands, that always take you back to a certain time in your life, a happy place if you will. For me, Pinback was one of those acts; they opened up the door to many more acts, not to mention their own near-perfect sound. So, I’m glad that despite his claim to have left it all behind, Rob Crow is back with Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place. The bass line alone was enough to hook me, that’s until I heard Crow’s voice working cleverly in and out between the guitar lines. In my ears, he’s still got it. Look forward to seeing what his new act has in store when You’re Doomed. Be Nice is released via Temporary Residence in March.

More Music from Stutter Steps

stutterstepsIf I haven’t told you guys how much I cherish the new album from Stutter Steps then perhaps I’ve made a huge mistake. The self-titled record is one of the few records that came across my desk this year that just didn’t fit in with the normal fare…in a good way. On this new track, you get a nice male versus female duel on the vocals, almost so perfect in its execution that the tune could survive without music. But, there’s this jangling indie rock approach by the band, bringing the song forward and pushing the energy fully behind the vocals. You can grab this album next week from Wild Kindness Records…and you’ll be wise to do so. 

Indiepop Joy from The Keep Left Signs

11393329_10153538320074014_8047800131827082902_oWe still don’t know too much about the Keep Left Signs, but I won’t deny that every note we’ve heard from them has us rather excited, or at least me. I got pointed in the direction of new songs just yesterday, and it appears these guys are near readying an album or an EP. They tossed up a few new tracks, and man, can I have these already? One of the tracks I have is a slower indiepop jam, while the other has a little bit more pacing behind it. Regardless, I’m dying to know more about these guys…as well as a future release. I’ll give you more as I get more.

New Klaus Johann Grobe

kjg_promo1 (1)Wow. Trouble In Mind should really have no problem selling this new 7″ they’re releasing from Klaus Johann Grobe, or maybe that’s just my opinion. But, imagine the crossroads where Peter Bjorn and John meet up with Stereolab, drawing upon a relaxing sensation of pop and electronic experimentation. In the end, this A-side sounds like the perfect lounge act for those of your friends with really good tastes, working with some killer harmonies that draw you in, no matter what language you speak. It’s just a feel good tune, particularly as I’m staring out my window at showering rains. Look for it in shops on December 4th.

Catching Up with Nap Eyes

nappyWay back in 2014 we were way into Nap Eyes, and it seems the rest of the world is catching on to our love there…everyon’es really high on this act at the moment. Yesterday, news broke of their forthcoming sophomore release, Thought Rock Fish Scale. This single doesn’t have too much going on in it musically; it’s a casual ditty worked around some really relaxed guitar work and quiet percussive moments. But, what I think it striking folks is that it’s putting some literary content back into the world, which a great deal of artists seem to have shied away from…so it’s good to get something like this on the radar. Paradise of Bachelors will be releasing the band’s new album on February 5th of next year.
