Ed Schrader’s Music Beat Ready New Single

infinityWhen I caught Ed Schrader’s Music Beat back in the Spring, I was extremely impressed by the band’s ability to create such a huge sound, despite only two members (and one who was just filling in for  a few shows). This brand new single from the group might not indicate that huge wall of spirited rock they created, but I like it’s off-kilter propulsive beat.  There’s something lurking in its simplicity that hooks its nails into my soul; I just can’t get this jam out of my head. Look for the Laughing/Bedouin Tramps single in a few weeks from Infinity Cat Recordings.

Hooray for Hooray for Earth

racyIf I were to sit around and pick my top few singles for the month of July, this new track from Hooray for Earth would definitely be in my top two or three.  There’s multiple components of the tune that keep me coming back to it: I love the seeming rise and fall of the guitar chords; I love the contrast between the verse and chorus, soft then loud (that’s a new tactic, right?).  Shit. I could listen to this song two hundred more times and probably never grow tired of it; it’s a pretty perfect pop number. Their album Racy will be released by Dovecote Records on July 29th; I have a feeling I’m going to love it.

Show Preview: The Antlers @ The Parish (7/20)

antlersIt seems like a few years ago, The Antlers were on top of the indie rock world.  They’d crafted two great records, won over countless fans, but with their latest album, Familiars, they didn’t seem to get as much fanfare as one would hope for.  Personally, I think that’s quite sad, as the ornate qualities of the record have made it a repeated joy to listen to time and time again.  They’ll be bringing their careful craftsmanship into town on Sunday night over at the Parish, which seems like the perfect venue for their sound. The show will start off at 8 PM with Thus Owls, so if you’ve got tickets, be sure to get there early to catch them as well.  You can see the latest live video as a reason why you need to show up early  HERE.

Dream Pop from The Hobbes Fanclub

hobbesIt’s been a couple of years since I’ve heard from Hobbes Fanclub, but after rounding out a full band, the group are finally ready to unleash their debut album.  The first single has this delightful bit of indiepop slightly obscured by a wash of feedback; it gives it that dreamy quality, laying somewhere beneath this great melody.  The UK group have titled their debut Up at Lagrange; it will be released by Shelflife on August 19th.  You can expect bits of shoe gaze, bits of pop, and a complete little masterpiece of a record.

Bishop Allen Gives Us Another Pop Hit

bishoWe’re less than a month away from the new Bishop Allen LP,  and it looks to offer us a whole lot of enjoyment as we wrap up our summer.  We previously shared “Start Again,” which was an immediate pop hit.  This new song, keeps vibe going, utilizing really light guitar lines and washes of keyboards to craft a pulsating verse that’s met by a quiet whirlpool of sugary delight.  Their new record, Lights Out, hits on August 19th via Dead Oceans, wrapping up what’s been a pretty fun summer of listening activities.  I can’t wait for you folks to hear this album, so get another little taste below.

New Music from Mega Bog

megaWhen I first played this new single from Mega Bog, I was taken aback momentarily.  It seemed like this casual piece of dreamy pop music with an 80s glint via the horns introduction.  But, a few spins later and I’m having trouble turning this song off.  There’s this hidden pace behind the ambling guitar and rolling drums, which balances out the softened delivery of the vocals from Erin Birgy.  It’s one of those songs I could listen to all day long, and I have a feeling you might feel the same.  The new record from the group, Gone Banana, will be released on September 23rd via Couple Skate.

ATH Alumni, Literature, Sign to Slumberland Records

litThe first record we ever put out on ATH Records was in conjunction with our good friends over at Square of Opposition Records; it was with Literature, who were at the time, an Austin act, before moving off to Philly.  That album, Arab Spring, has already gone through several presses, and we still have a few laying about, but more importantly, their new album has just been announced with Slumberland Records.  The lead single is enough to show you why they’ve quietly built a huge name for themselves, just off the gifts of their songwriting.  You’re going to want to pick up Chorus when it’s released on August 19th…and if you’re inclined, you can pick up their first LP HERE or HERE.

Catchy Pop from Lunchbox

lunchboxAfter a brief name change to Birds of California, Lunchobx has returned to their name sake in order to release a brand new album, said to be their best in their 15+ year career.  Their working with Jigsaw Records to release Lunchbox Loves You, which will hit the world running on August 12th.  The song moves along with a raucous bit of pop, but just beyond a minute and a half, they offer a more soothing twist on their current offering, escorted to the song’s ending by some nice horn accompaniment.  It’s a nice dosage of pop, and one that’s sure to get you excited about the band’s return.

GRMLN Announces New LP

grmlWith the last GRMLN album you could turn it up, get caught in the huge riffs and the rest faded away.  It’s a sound that plenty of people employ nowadays, but I’ve really been gravitating towards this guy’s sound.  There’s a bit of Weasel residue in the writing style, which isn’t bad in my opinion, but all indicators point towards a darker subject matter on Soon Away.  It’s a a great sound that resonates with young and old alike, so prepare yourself to enjoy another album from the band; it’s being released by Carpark Records on September 16th.

Shy Boys to Release New 7″

shyboysI think a lot of people drastically overlooked the wonderful S/T effort from Shy Boys, but lets hope that this new 7″ they’re planning can attract more attention.  Now, if you’re looking for some guitar pop that’s heavy on distortion and power chords, then this isn’t the sort for you.  This is of the other ilk, relaxed in its entirety, with just a hint of movement coming via the riding of the cymbal. Like most of the work from the band, you just get to sit back and let the harmonies wash over you, drifting in and out of your consciousness.  You can grab the new 7″, titled 45, on August 26th from High Dive Records.
