Show Preview: M83 @ Stubbs (5/18)

Date Friday, May 18th
Location Stubbs
Doors 700 pm
Tickets SOLD OUT

M83 doesn’t need much of an introduction anymore, though old school fans might found his new usage of vocals a little different than his instrumental construction pieces; I dig both styles, but I’m sort of partial to his earlier career.  Unfortunately, the show at Stubbs sold out, but if you’re willing to browse Craigslist or hit up a friend, I know you can get in to the show.  A real reason you should get there early, however, is to catch I Break Horses.  The Swedish band has graced the pages of our site on several occasions, and I know our photographer B. Gray really enjoys what they do.  Their music is a clever combination of electronics and soundscapes, sort of like what Anthony Gonzalez had done on his most recent effort.  If you can score a ticket, catch a great show from these two solid acts.

Show Preview: Jeremy Jay @ Stubbs (2/6)

Date Monday, February 6th
Location Stubb’s BBQ
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from FrontGate

Jeremy Jay was definitely on my radar over the last several years, putting out several solid albums in a quick spurt.  He’s done most of his work on K Records, and I’ve heard he’s in the process of new tunes.  His shows are always a blast, as he dances about the stage with either guitar or microphone, consistently connecting with the audience.  For such a cheap price, you can’t make any excuses for not catching JJ at Stubbs.  Get there early to check out Survive, the opening act on this occasion.

Show Preview: The Kills @ Stubbs

Date Wednesday, Jan 25th
Location Stubbs
Doors 700 pm
Tickets $23 from Frontgate

One of the more enduring and endearing rock acts of the last several years is the Kills, having put out album after album of sludgy guitar rock with the always fierce Alison Mosshart fronting the group.  They’re loud, they’re bratty, and they, dare I say, always “kill” it live.  But, for me, the more intriguing opening act of Jeff the Brotherhood is what’s going to bring me to throw my dollars away.  Last year’s We Are the Champions filled my ears with hit after hit of sharp-edged jams and hooks galore.  And, they won’t be the only opener, as Hunter is set to kick the whole night off.  If you’re looking for an actual rock show featuring pure on rock n’ roll, then meet me at Stubbs on Wednesday night.

Show Pics: Cass McCombs @ Stubb’s (1/14)

Cass McCombs came to town to play an intimate set at Stubb’s indoor stage. The crowd on hand was tightly packed into the cave beneath the restaurant, enthusiastic and respectful. The quiet moments were quiet allowing Cass and the band to fill the space.

Helping to create that atmosphere was the spellbinding opening set from Frank FairField.. Just a stool, guitar, violin or banjo, toe-taps to set the rhythm and single mic in front to pick it all up. Pin drop quiet allowing the traditional blues/folk sound to resonate. The crowd would burst with approval between songs.

Wish I could have spent more time, but split show duties did not allow. Head after the jump for pics…

Date Saturday, January 14th
Location Stubbs
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 from Frontgate

As the show season begins to pick up, and the weather remains a bit on the cold side, you’re going to find the perfect show for you Saturday night over at Stubbs.  Cass McCombs, six records into his career, is the sort of singer you want to hear inside Stubbs, where the heat of the crowd accompanies the solemn vocal display and quiet musical accompaniment.  As his career has gone on, he’s only gotten more respect from the press, and tracks like the deeply moving “County Line” are a perfect reason for this.  Opening the show will be Frank FairField.

Show Preview: Modest Mouse @ Stubbs (11/8 & 11/9)

Date 11/8/11  & 11/9/11
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!

I hope most of you were paying attention to sites that think more in the future and saw the recent announcement about the Modest Mouse shows at Stubbs in Austin.  I say this because both the initial show and secondary show are sold out so you’ll have to try craigslist or scalpers for this one.  Both nights will have stellar opening support provided by Portland based group Talkdemonic.  Don’t forget that Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. will also be doing aftershows on the inside stage for both nights.  Get your hands on some tickets kids.

Show Preview: Arctic Monkeys (8/2)

Date Tuesday, August 2nd
Location Stubbs
Doors 700pm
Tickets SOLD OUT

Okay, so this is a SOLD OUT show, but you know how it goes over at Stubbs; there’s bound to be some scalpers who bought twenty tickets to sell to you and your friends. I think it’s worth a try, considering what a remarkably energetic band the Arctic Monkeys are on the stage, with bouncing rhythms and angular guitar chops. And, on top of that you get to see one of our favorite new acts, Young Buffalo, who we posted about a few weeks back.  If you can find your way in somehow, I’m pretty sure you’ll leave drenched in sweat, feeling that it was worth every minute.

Show Preview: Country Mice @ Stubbs (7/22)

Date Friday, July 22nd
Location Stubbs
Doors 1100p
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

One of the groups who’ve really grown on me since I first got their album, Twister, is Country Mice.  They’re a Brooklyn band, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’ll sound like the majority of the stuff coming out of NYC.  They blend tiny elements of pop with pure Americana sounds, giving you some warmth to your listening experience.  They’ll be accompanied by Boy this Friday night over at Stubbs, and you can’t really go wrong with two great bands for $10.  Hopefully we see you there!
