Challenging themselves to write get out one song a month for the year, Red Sleeping Beauty have another pop ditty to slide into your rotation. A dancing little line jumps you right into the track, before being met by a quick wash of keys that cleanse your palate as the song slides into subtle disco pop. I love the fusion of the electronic elements with this jangling guitar line that hangs about in the distance; you tie it all together and you have this freeing moment of melody that should have you spinning about with your arms out wide like a helicopter, ready to take off into the weekend. Boy With Apple Return with Good For You

Swedish outfit Boy with Apple have been on our radar for some time, and they slowly keep churning out these dreamy little singles to keep our attention. Their latest is completely blissed out, taking their ghostly tendencies and draping them atop these subtle little beats that move and unfurl throughout the mix. Honestly, the more I listen, the more it feels like the Sneaker Pimps turning into a dream pop band; there are the little club beats that provide a groove, yet they get wrapped up in the swirling atmospherics, giving more of a modern twist to the vibe. As always, the band’s work is brought to you by Varo Records.

Baula Share Mercury in Retrograde

It’s Friday, and I feel like I needed a song that would be great for rolling the windows down and going for a drive, and this jam from Sweden’s Baula is absolutely perfect. It instantly hits you with this growling rhythm section, rushing you right into the song’s center, where the curtain’s pulled back to offer up a little sugary treat for you to devour. Swirling about, the vocals billow through your speakers, all the while the drums continue their thumping pulse from the background; you’re going to find yourself locked right into the groove, unable to pull away from the infectious nature they’ve captured…and ultimately, you’ll press play because nothing says “windows down” like this hit!

Club 8 Release Just Like Heaven

Contrary to popular opinion, this new Club 8 track is not a Cure cover song, and in fact, doesn’t even seem close, aside from the song’s title. There’s something about the group that faintly reminds me of Raveonettes, using a similar adherence to a simplistic formula; the rhythm section is tight and buoyant, but never out of pocket. This allows the group to focus on the pop sensibility, whether that comes via the sharp guitar notes or the coolness of the vocal delivery. This is their second single recently, so let’s hope we’re getting more classic pop vibes from the Swedish outfit in the new future, and maybe even a nice little LP.

Boy With Apple Ready Debut LP

A few years back, Sweden’s Boy with Apple were all the rage over here at ATH; they had several rad singles I wrote up, but then disappeared. Apparently, that was to hole up and finish up their debut LP, which we’ve got a peek into with this fresh single. A simplistic view on their style would be to offer the group up as some brand of dream pop, and I totally get that when listening to the guitar bits that wave across this tune. But, if you put your ear closer, or turn up your headphones, you can certainly hear an almost 90s earnestness to the vocal delivery, particularly when the chorus erupts into that ethereal pop pulse. It’s a really special moment, working really tightly with this trippy club beat that works the percussive element deep in the song’s shadows. Looking forward to hearing what their debut Lp sounds like; it drops via Varo Records on March 15th.

You can expect me to have a lot of coverage on Red Sleeping Beauty this year, as the band have just signed themselves up to release one brand new single a month, and I’ll obviously be covering said singles until the end. It’s a challenge for the group, hoping to get them into working towards a new LP, and they’re starting off on the right foot if you ask me. Electronic pulses serve as the backbone of the track, allowing the Swedes to bring their cooled melodic vocals through the verses. Then, the chorus hits, spinning you around with this high-toned vocal that seems sprinkled with hooks, moving forward to open up for a playful interlude before dropping that hook right back on you. Always great to hear from this act, so expect to hear more from them throughout the year.

Catchy New Tune From The Manikins

If you are unfamiliar with Sweden’s finest rock band The Manikins, well what are you even doing with your life? These lads were huge around 2008-2009, and though they took an extended break after that (9 years!), they never truly slowed down their musical output. This year, the band has plans for a 6th studio album featuring this new lead single “Rosita.” It’s a highly infectious, super fun bit of garage rock music best described by the band as a “trashy tearjerker.” Seems fitting.

Pre-orders for The Manikins 6th studio album, Swedish Woods, are live now. The album hits the streets on November 17th via Lovely Records.

Melody Fields Shares Jesus Single

If you were looking to get into the latest cool Swedish outfit, might I suggest you try on some Melody Fields. This weekend they sent us a reminder that their latest track also came with the release of their 1901 LP. For me, this track’s sort of in that weird psychedelic territory where it’s not quite Spaceman 3 but also not quite Brian Jonestown; there’s certainly a heaviness pervading, albeit with these swelling vocal melodies popping in and out in all the right places. Ride thids tune right into the purchase of their new LP; it’s available now!

Melody Fields Share Hallelujah Single

I know it’s early in the day, but I can’t help other than to indulge myself with this sweet tune from Sweden’s Melody Fields. Honestly, everything about this track feels like a seedy early 90s dance track; its got this almost tribal percussive element, bouncing along to these keys as the track swirls with these delicious ups and downs. There are some vocal samples in and out, but they’re more like ghostly whispers or folks grooving on the floor to this mystical world the group have created. This track is available via a new 7″, but it’s also expected on the forthcoming 1991 LP, out later via Coop/Nudie.

Fort Not Release Tell Me Nothing Single

The pending release from Fort Not is high on my list of anticipated albums coming our way in July; I’ve loved their approach to songwriting, taking on all sorts of approaches in their interpretation of guitar pop. Their latest single hits me somewhere in the realm of the Clean and Hunx; it has a distinctive vibe that feels supremely haphazard and DIY, but even in that, you can’t deny the joy that hits you when it comes through your speakers. Playful and carefree, with perfect execution and little touches (see 2:20 mark) that elevate the tune. Depressed for Success is going to hit on July 7th via Meritorio Records.
