New Music from Sweet Baboo

Stephen Black’s Sweet Baboo work has been in and out of my music listening rotation since he first popped up on Moshi Moshi, and I’m really looking forward to the release of Wild Imagination. Here we have SB offering up a careful bit of pop music, dripping melodies atop synthesized beats that recall both warm weather and 80s movie soundtracks. It’s really about Black though, especially as you can see his vocal playfulness as he sings out the simple notes of “whoa whoa whoa” during the chorus. His new effort will hit on June 2nd, for all your adoring pop ears.

Fresh Music from Sweet Baboo

babsI’ve mentioned the pop work of Sweet Baboo before; his work draws upon that classic approach to British pop songwriting, which is why he’s found a home with Moshi Moshi Music.  Speaking of his label, they’ve just offered up a brand new track from the songwriter, landing him in territory akin to both Antony and the Wave Pictures; I know it sounds strange, but you’ll understand exactly what I’m saying when you spend some time with the tune.  There’s the vocal and the intricate process in the recording itself that brings these things to mind.  Tell me what you think.

Casual Indiepop from Sweet Baboo

sweetbabooNot too long ago I wrote about Sweet Baboo, who released Ships earlier this year via Moshi Moshi.  He’s turned right around to ready another EP, titled Motoring Home.  For me, his music falls somewhere between the realm of Wave Pictures and Bubblegum Lemonade…both acts that are a must have for any fan of the genre.  I also like the fact that this isn’t a project that’s taken too seriously, especially when you come to the auto-tuned verse that lurks in the middle of the song.  Perhaps the greatest thing is you can sit back in your chair, allowing for a grin to creep up on your face as you revel in the simplicity.

Mellow Pop from Sweet Baboo

Man, this is possibly my favorite discovery of the week, and it’s only Monday.  Sweet Baboo is a Welsh songwriter who has warmed my heart today with his latest single, which will be featured on his upcoming album, Ships–slated to be released by Moshi Moshi in April.  When the tune opens, it’s a smooth pop croon, though the accent gives it sort of that oddball Devandra Banhart quality.  That’s all well-and-good, but the eruption of horns and vocals during the chorus is quite remarkable.  I have a feeling that this tune will find its way to haunt my mind and ears for sometime to come; I hope it does the same for you.
