New Single from Fiona Fiasco

Normally, I like to kick off my Fridays with a banger, but felt like offering this new Fiona Fiasco single might be something that could set the tone for a reflective morning before bounding into the weekend. The production is really careful not to step across the vocals, as that’s one of the highlights of the tune, listening as Fiona lets her voice sort of rise, crest, then turn away in each poetic lines. In her approach, I can hear the artistry of Cate le Bon, and while the arrangements are careful, the way the strings buoy the emotions within makes the song swell with beauty. Definitely someone to keep your eye upon!

Metrophobia Share Lena Single

I didn’t have Swiss duo Metrophobia on my bingo card, but I should have, as I’m totally digging on their latest bit of blissed out pop. Just imagine the world of Jesus and the Mary Chain, but pull away the walls of distortion and reverb; you get this clarity, highlighting the natural melody that both bands work with. I love the brightness, highlighted by the blossoming guitar working beneath the buzzsaw grind. Huge vocals wash over it all, drenching this song in a warmth that certainly resonates on my end of things. If big guitar sounds are your thing, get ready to turn this one to 11.

Jon Hood Share Primrose

Big can of Primrose Daycare System, and big fan of this new jam, “Primrose,” by Swedish outfit Jon Hood. It slides right into my recent move back into a more electronic brand of indie rock, a la the Melenas and a million other acts we could name drop for cool points. The whole track feels like a sprint around a track, catching your breath momentarily, then racing back to catch your opponents. There are some tight little turns this way and that from the guitars, not to mention some heavy underground buzzing, all building in the textural balance that made me love this jam.

Pet Owner Announces Second Nature

If you’re looking for a nice dosage of pop this morning, can I turn you onto Pet Owner; the Swiss artist announces her latest LP, Second Nature. Her work is all about musical quilting; she carefully layers texture after texture in a synthetic structure, and this go round it’s a delicate bit of bedroom pop. The negative space on the track perfectly opens the tune for the vocals, allowing them do drift in and out of the musical cracks and filling them with magical melodies. Second Nature is slated for a release early next year, so expect us to return with a handful more singles for you!

Dreamy New Tune From Deleterolf

Things will likely be a bit slow this week as people shut ease into a holiday weekend on Friday. Before then, we of course have a few songs to throw your way for mid-week and weekend vibing. Though it’s early yet, this new track called “Used to Be” from Zurich based artist deleterolf is my frontrunner for your track of the week. It has a super dreamy, yet driving vibe to it an gives off the quiet beauty of say Efterklang mixed with Beach House. I am sure you’ll love it.

Mnevis Share T.K. Collider

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding Swiss outfit Mnevis after the release of their debut Episodes; they’ve gotten a bit of praise for folks that are inclined to digest Radiohead’s catalog in one sitting. Take, for instance, this new sprawling opus; it flirts with you as if it were a piece of mundane pop, utilizing autotune and synthetic beats to gets its hooks in you. And, as you’re satisfied with the pleasantries, it unfolds with both beats and vocals dousing themselves in a more pure form at the motorik beat rings true. Now’s your chance to be on the front lines of what’s cool in Switzerland…plus just enjoy a nice little morning musical marathon.

Soft Single from Unknown Vagabond

It’s always nice to open up on a Wednesday with something softly spoken, like Swiss artists Unknown Vagabond. The latest single from the project works carefully over these ornate guitar pluckings, with an underlying bit of buzz blossoming, taking the song from this harrowing sentiment to something filled with promise. You can feel the sun begin to creep up in the distance, awakening as you might be, a fresh hope on the horizon. There’s this slight shift too around the 2.5 minute mark, bringing in an even more intimate moment for the listener. Eventually, drums kick in, careful not to overstep the preceding layers of melody, and it all cascades into a slow fade into the distance. Immerse yourself below.

Seasonal Falls Shares Happy Dayz

I first started covering Roman Gabriel when he was running the Kind Hills, but I’m hyper-focused on his new project Seasonal Falls. When the piano tinkering rings out upon pressing play, you’re immediately hit with this wash of emotion; it creates this wistful sense of longing that’s inescapable. That matches up well with Gabriel’s lyrics here, as the song seems to have listeners straddling the fine line between the terrors of the world we live in and the hope that we can all just embrace living for the moment. As much as I adore those moments, the softness of the strum accompanying the vocals really just sunk me, and I fell head over heels for the magic that’s hanging out before you here. Be prepared to be struck by waves of emotion when the project releases their LP, Happy Days this coming May.

Seasonal Falls Shares Debut Single

Our Internet friend Roman Gabriel (the Dentals, the Kind Hills) has returned with a new project, Seasonal Falls. Today they’ve shared their debut single, perfect a mid-Fall sound (for those not in the throes of Texas climate change). There’s some really light percussive touches from the snare and piano, quietly working their way into your ear as you turn your focus towards the strum and melodic voice. For some reason, this feels kind of like something Elliott Smith adjacent; it has that natural personality to it, that soft-spoken charm that makes your entire day. Felt like this was a great place to start, and hopefully we’ll hear more from the group soon!

Penkowski Share Raining + Release New LP

It’s that time of year when I start going through tons of old emails I’ve saved and then forgotten, for whatever reason that is. One of those projects was Swiss outfit Penkowski, who just recently dropped Final Destination Disneyland. If you’re taking your first bite of the LP, it’s got this brash post-punk feel, which is why I wanted to share “Raining.” It’s this thoughtful piece of art pop that kind of has this crooning swagger; it’s hanging out in the middle of this raucous record like some sort of drunken karaoke singer, serenading an audience full of sullen hipsters…they’d absolutely love it, like we do. Give this jam a listen, then turn up the volume and listen to the whole LP!
