SXSW Interview: Mammoth Penguins

When Standard Fare called it a day, Emma Kupa moved on to from Mammoth Penguins. I’ve been a huge fan from day one, and There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win was one of my favorite LPs last year. All that said, I’ve never caught the band live, so I’m more than excited to finally get to see them at SXSW this year. We caught up with the group real quick to grab some answers to our little interview.

SXSW is here! Well not literally here, but it is getting ever closer as the days go by. I know it’s hard to believe, as many of us feel like we just recovered from the week long fest yesterday. Well it’s here people and it seems like a perfect time to start preparing. As usual, your friendly ATH staff will be providing previews, playlists and our much anticipated SXSW interviews/questionnaires. Now we send these out to a lot of bands in the hopes you can pick up some varying perspectives on the vast amount of bands coming to town and how they approach the week. New Pop Tune from Tugboat Captain

I’ve written about Tugboat Captain previously, and with the London outfit scheduled to show up in Austin for SXSW, I thought it would be a nice time to check back in on the band. They’ve just offered up this new tune in demo fashion in hopes of raising some funds for their 3rd LP, as well as that trip across the sea. Personally, I’m not sure what else they could really add to make this more than a demo, aside from punching up a level here and there in the mix. I love the breakdown at the 3 minute mark; it’s the perfect way to cap off a promising tune. If you’re inclined to support the group, you can go HERE to throw a buck or two their way.

SXSW Music Wristbands

Wristbands for SXSW‘s 2020 Music Conference go on sale tomorrow. Here is what you need to know.

Purchase Requirements

  1. You must provide a valid credit card with funds available to purchase the number of wristbands you request (up to 2).
  2. The purchaser will provide their name, phone number, email, valid credit card number and expiration date and billing address. The billing zip code must be listed in the approved greater Austin area list.
  3. A second wristband may be purchased by providing a separate name and email address. These wristbands are non-transferable and nonrefundable.
  4. Each named person must personally pick up their wristband (which will be put on their wrist at that time) at the Austin Convention Center.
  5. Each person may only buy one wristband for themselves and one friend. Any person who succeeds in purchasing multiple wristbands will be charged, but will not be able to use them for other people other than the one friend named at the time of purchase. Impressive Track From Another Sky

Another Sky is a London based band I discovered during my meandering during SXSW a short few weeks ago. The band had this unique atmospheric rock sound, but most impressive, were the vocals from singer Catrin Vincent. Her range is truly astounding as she can drop down for low, angry bass notes to rise up again for the high ones as well. The band’s new song “The Cracks” demonstrates her range, and the band’s sound, perfectly. I’m not sure I’ve heard a band with such a unique sound in a very, very long time.

Another Sky will release a new EP entitled Life Was Coming in Through the Blinds! on June 14th.

SXSW 2019 – A Recap

Yet another SXSW is in the books and it’s time for the ATH crew to reminisce a little and offer some highlight from the week behind us. I think we’ve had enough time now to take a few deep breaths, collect our thoughts, and delve through tons of notes and photos. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll offer up awards to bands, venues and events worthy of such praise. It will be glorious. Hit the jump for a full recap with photos.
