Announcing The ATH vs SOTO Spring Break Showdown

We’re a few weeks away from the madness that we all love, or at least I do. And happily, we’ve teamed up with our friends over at Side One Track One to bring you a solid bill of 29 Austin acts, and a French band. What’s the cost to you? FREE! The whole show will be going on over at Hotel Vegas/Volstead on Sunday, March 12th, and we hope you come out to enjoy the day with us, starting right at 2 PM with one of my favorites, AMA. There’s four stages and not a bad band on the bill! More info on the FB Event Page.

Here’s a list of other participating bands on the day: Ama, Julia Lucille, Basketball Shorts, Quin Galavis and Annecy, Caroline Says, John Wesley Coleman, Jana Horn, She Sir, Lola Tried, Wild Bill and the Lost Knobs, Darkbird, The Halfways, Mean Jolene, Melat, Grivo, Pollen Rx, The Lovely Sparrows, Hard Proof, Roaring Sun, A. Sinclair, Black Books, Tres Oui, The Digital Wild, Tamarron, Upper Deck Pets, Growl, Skin Drips, Midnight Stroll, The Dizzease, and Weird Omen (mbrs of King Khan).

Check out a bunch of tunes from the bands after the jump.

Noisey New Pop Number From Dead Leaf Echo

As if I wasn’t already excited enough for Brooklyn based Dead Leaf Echo to be heading into town for SXSW, I now have this new single to grow my anticipation. As usual, these guys bring a noisy, shoegaze pop sound worthy ofall the current greats in the genre. Not surprising when each band member has a history of greatness in bands like Wax Idols, My Bloody Valentine, No Joy, etc. Get ready.

Dead Leaf Echo will release a new EP entitled Strawberry Skin on March 31st via Papercup Music.

Annabel Allum Gets Gritty (SXSW Artist)

Stick around on this tune passed the first thirty seconds; you’ll be in for a nice little treat. While this new Annabel Allum tune begins with a pretty little serenade, it quickly plugs into the amps, stamps down on the pedal and lets loose. She manages to take her folk traditions into the heavy guitar pop realm. That being said, I really love the chorus, as I feel like the notes hit on “rich backgrounds/rich fucking backgrounds” is a perfect delivery, and I can’t get it out of my head! She’s coming to Austin, and I’m ready to put her on my list of must see acts.

SXSW Interview: The Spook School

I adore the Spook School; I followed them around all of last SXSW, caught them at least 7 times. Today we continue our coverage by catching up with the band before they cross the Atlantic and make their way back into our hearts. Jump on and get a little introduction to the band, and be sure to guide them to the Vegan hotspots in Austin. Be sure to stream the gem from Continental Drift hanging at the end, featuring some of the best indiepop on any continent. Read more

Extravagant Pop from Trudy and the Romance

trudyThere’s something about band’s just doing their own thing that’s really appealing, which is how I’ve felt since I first caught wind of Trudy and the Romance. They’ve definitely got some obvious marks to the current musical climate, but they tend to ignore those indicators quite often, making them all the more captivating. For instance, the vocals here offer a main croon, but an emphatic teen gang vocal serving as its counterpart. Musically, the guitars encircle the vocal performance, which sits in the front of the mix here. Looking for something more than your average fare? These guys just keep banging out hits, and they’ll be back for SXSW!
