There’s only a few times in the year when I bite off more than I can chew, and this whole SXSW time is one of them…but I’m always happy. Not only have I been helping SXSWfm with a radio podcast, but I also have been working behind the scenes on their preview guide for the festival…along with other notables like OVRLD, Sterogum and Pigeons and Planes. We’re just a mere week away from SXSW festival, and we’ve got another interview with one of the acts that’s high on my list of “must sees,” Nap Eyes. They just recently released Thought Rock Fish Scale, which is one of the albums you absolutely must have (in my opinion). We caught up with Nigel to get a few words as they make their way to Austin.
Taryn Miller crafts soaring pop masterpieces under the name of Your Friend. Her debut album, Gumption, puts her in the same vein of similar artists like Beach House, though she’s mostly working on her own up in Lawrence, Kansas; I note that because she sounds nothing like what one would associate with the Lawrence scene from a decade ago. Ancient Warfare should be riding high after all the praise for their 2015 album, The Pale Horse. But, more importantly, the Kentucky quartet is making their way to SXSW for their first time. We caught up with them real quick to get a glimpse of their lives and their expectations coming into town for the festival.
If there’s a record that B.Gray and I are pretty excited about hearing, it has to be this upcoming Lust for Youth LP. The band has continued to grow their sound, creating some of the darkest, yet most accessible, electronic pop music around. They’ve also got a pretty intoxicating live show, which doesn’t always happen for the genre. They tossed out another single today from Compassion, so seems fitting that we stay in line with our obsession and post this new tune as well. You can hear the record when it’s released on March 18th via Sacred Bones Records. Also…check the band touring the States, including SXSW.

Imagine my delight when I heard this new track from What Moon Things. On their latest single, the band are taking a blend of darkwave electronic elements and putting on some dream pop touches. There’s a guitar sound that should definitely be familiar to those who follow a great deal of my posts (all 8 of you). This song celebrates the band working on the follow up to their heralded 2014 debut that won them some rave reviews from the likes of P4K and others. You can also add the group to the many that will be making their way to Austin in a few weeks for SXSW.

Hospital Ships are back this year, and they’ve got a new album to share with you all too! He’s been in and around Austin quite a bit, playing with friends and recording, so he’s familiar with the scene, but then again, SXSW is a whole different animal. Haelos are going to be one of the hotter tickets at SXSW this year, especially with the release of their album, Full Circle, coming in at the end of the festival (March 18th). They’re definitely in my Top Ten list of acts to catch this year, so we were fortunate enough to catch up with Dom Goldsmith from the group before they make their way to Austin.

One of the bands that I’m really excited to catch, for my first time, is Hooton Tennis Club. The band released Highest Point in Cliff Town on Heavenly Recordings last year; it barely left my stereo for a few long weeks.
