SXSW officially opens today, though the music doesn’t roll out until the weekend. With that in mind, we’d like to re-introduce you to Snacktime, who’ve taken the time to fill out our little mini-survey in regards to their adventure to our town. I love how they claim to be channeling Prince, Parliament and Sly/Family Stone in their sound, which bodes well for audiences looking to have a great time. Meet the group below!
I know SXSW has made some errors, and it’s hard to support something so massive in the current climate. But, one thing I’ve always appreciated it that a lot of country’s send their favorite artists abroad to spread the word on their art scenes…and Scotland’s Cloth is one such group we’re excited to get to know better when they make their way next week. They’ve got a new record titled Pink Silence coming out in April, so take a quick read below and get to know them!
I’ll keep this simple. SXSW music kicks off this weekend with our annual ATH vs SOTO party at Hotel Vegas on Sunday, and then things ramp up to 100 starting on Monday. As usual, it should be a wild and fun time for the team and we hope to see some of you out there. Many of you mentioned the daunting task of wading through all the bands coming to town, so I sat down, combed the entire list, and built out a playlist for you to peruse and hopefully make things easier. If you hear something you like, seek it out. Something you don’t like it? Skip it and on to the next one. See ya’ll out there.
As we continue to churn out some of these SXSW getting to know you pieces, I am finding a lot to look forward to next week when the music lineup really shows up in Austin. If you’re one of those still holding on to the old Austin narrative, why not venture out and see one of the hundreds of amazing bands coming to town? I have a sick kid, so for the first time I’m able to dive through all these damned emails, and in there is this fun tune from Lithuania’s Shishi. The group is on my list of acts to catch when they roll into town for SXSW, and hopefully we’ll get to hear this new single, as it’s got this playful bit of garage meets post-punk attitude. Springy little guitar lines wiggle in and out of the tune, and I’m all for that; they up the ante to the fun by including some group vocal delivery, bringing in an old school vibe that will surely get stuck in your head. They’ve just signed to Birthday Cake Records for a forthcoming EP, so stay tuned!
One week away people. Just one more short week away from the chaos and joy that comes with the annual SXSW festival in Austin, TX. Though one can never be truly prepared for everything, we hope you fans have at least had some time to peruse the band list to find something that sparks your interest. Hopefully another interview set, this time from Texas natives Saint Blonde, will further spark some musical interest in your ear holes. The ATH team is still thrown off with how early SXSW is going down this year, and it seems insane that things kick off in just over a week. How is this possible?!? Well, ready or not, things are set to go down soon as we close out the long AF month of February. It is here folks. It is somehow time to start planning and prep for SXSW 2025. Things are happening a bit earlier this year in March so we are going to start churning out coverage now with less than a month to go before things kick off in Austin. It seemed like a no brainer for us to continue our quick hit interview sessions, offering a brief glimpse into the lives of these musicians and creatives. Starting things off with a bang this festival season, we have Los Angeles based artist Gold Star. Every year, we get to join our friends from 101X Homegrown and Side One Track One for a big old musical bash to kick off SXSW music week. Today, we bring you the news of our annual event, with details and lineup ready to go for you all! The event kicks off on March 9th at 3 PM, with some of the best bands in the Austin music scene taking over the Hotel Vegas complex; it’s three stages and 27 bands, all for the low low price of $0. All you have to do is show up, be kind to your fellow attendees, and sit back and enjoy yourself. We’re already looking forward to the SXSW lineup, particularly as they’ve listened, relatively, to some of the noise surrounding their sponsorships (though the artist pay bump could still be higher). But, one of the main things I love, and I know a shit ton of folks who over look this benefit, is that it allows bands to apply for grants from their governments to come perform in our country…and Coldwave is one of the group’s just announced for a trip to our shores. The Australian band reminds me a lot of Shame, though they’ve got a larger group building in the texture, as you’ll see from this live video they recorded for “Italia ’06.”
