After just recently sharing their awesome new pop single with you, I thought it fitting to reach out to DC based group Pree to discuss their upcoming SXSW experience. As always, we are very thankful for the band’s time and honest answers. Follow the jump to see what they have to say.
While perusing some of the bands playing SXSW this year, I came across DC pop band Pree, realizing that I posted about them almost 6 years ago as a start up act. Now I’ve probably missed some of their tunes over the years, but I’m excited to share with you this great track today entitled “Hooks & Eyes”. The song is an impressive little pop number that reminds me of fellow female led band Headlights combined with some of the quirkiness from Deerhoof. It’s rather pleasant.

SXSW is just around the corner, and while the beast seems to be laying somewhat dormant this year, I wanna make sure we keep you posted on what’s coming up, and who we’re excited to see. I sent some questions to Cory Hanson of Wand, who released Ganglion Reef last year, and are releasing Golem this Spring. Chicago-native King Louie, sometimes known as King L, is considered part of the Chiraq (pronounced Shy-Rack) movement in hip-hop, though he continues to put out a considerable amount of uncharacteristically Chiraq music. Most Chiraq music has loud, abrasive beats paired with loud, ultra violent, often gang-affiliated gangsta rap (think Chief Keef), but a number of King Louie’s songs are almost the complete opposite; subtle, smooth, relaxed, and slow (though he has plenty of characteristically Chiraq music). His appearance on Chance The Rapper’s brother Taylor Bennett’s single “New Chevy” was indicative of this, as well as his more recent song “Right Now”. King Louie performed at SXSW the last two years, so there’s a high possibility he’ll be in town again next month. “Right Now” can be downloaded for free via Audiomack or streamed below.

Just in case you missed the news, or didn’t have time to live stream, you can now head to SXSWFM’s soundcloud page, and just stream the whole hour. It’s got lots of hits, though remember, these all had to be Official SXSW acts…just in case you thought I left out your best friend’s brother’s band. No need to say much more, just go stream it, and enjoy some Austin tunes. Feel free to spread it to your friends that are coming in to town and might not know what’s what or which way is that way.

I’ve been fortunate with this site, and such fortunes continue with some friends reaching out to have me curate an hour of music featuring SXSW Official Austin acts that I wanted to rest of the world to know about. It also features my horrendous voice, though only for like 30 seconds total. I kind of went all over the map, trying to be as diverse as possible within the realm of my own tastes. The little show will run three times today on SXSWFM (9 AM, 3 PM, 9 PM), which is a great place to get to know some of the artists, not just the Austin ones. Here’s the artists I chose to include: Flesh Lights, Sour Notes, Jess Williamson, Roger Sellers, Mirror Travel, Shivery Shakes, Grape St, Ramesh, A Sinclair, Love Inks, Hundred Visions, Abram Shook, Ssleeperhold, The Zoltars, Warm Soda and The Eastern Sea. Just doing what I can to give a little love to our friends. Special thanks to Brett and Rory for this rad opportunity.
You can get your SxSW Music wristbands tomorrow. Same rules as usual – Austin area billing zip code for your plastic, you can buy two wristbands but have to provide the names, you’ll need photo IDs to pick up your wristband which will get snapped on at the start of the conference.
For your $169, you will get access to any venue not at capacity aside from the few showcases that are badge only. I used a wristband last year to get away from FOMO and it was bliss. Go check out someone you have never seen instead of getting barraged by Dorito Taco Loco.

I will freely admit to being pretty stoked for many friends and faves of the ATH. A. Sinclair, Grapet St, Shivery Shakes, Ramesh, Hundred Visions, Think No Think, Gal Pals, Moonlight Towers and Roger Sellers. I mean, it is Austin’s year to take this conference back from the invaders. However, they will have to contend with artists like Best Coast, Futurebirds, Diarrhea Planet, Beacon, Broncho, Palma Violets, Joywave and Jeff the Brotherhood, as well as all the big names already announced.
Start girding those loins….
It is time to share the next big batch of bands and people and things that the masses will be chasing from venue to venue and between day-party tents during SxSW.
It still feels too far away to get excited, yet I get a flutter. THere are some pretty good names on the list, including local faves, ATH faves and some good touring acts that otherwise may not be in town. In no particular (alphabetical), here are some highlights: Beat Connection, The Cribs, The Districts, EX-Cult, Gang of Four, King TUff, Nikki Lane, Mirror Travel, My Jerusalem, Pujol, Sophie, Surfer Blood, SURVIVE, Ting Tings, Twin Shadow, Yukon Blonde and Yumi Zouma. One kind of cool thing SxSW is doing now is SxSW fm and they have a “podcast” on Soundcloud as a preview of this round of artists. What’s better than a show with a great lineup of locals? A show with a great lineup of locals all playing for a good cause. That’s what’s going down on Tuesday at the Palm Door on 6th and we wanted to get the word out as best we can. The show is free, but 20% of the bar will be donated to HAAM so get your drink on!
