New Tunes from Snake Rattle Rattle Snake

snakeWe’re happy to tell you about some new friends we’ve made from Denver, Colorado: Snake Rattle Rattle Snake. They’ve just released their self-titled EP, and they’ve already got us wanting more.  We’re offering up one of these tracks to you, which showcases the brooding vocals of Hayley Helmericks.   For some reason, this recalls a really dark version of Pretty Girls Make Graves if they were more post-industrial than post-punk, if that makes sense to anyone but me.  The group is making their way to Austin for SXSW, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on their arrival, along with other various details.

SXSW Watchlist: Jets Overhead

jetsoverheadWhaaaa?!?  It’s barely February and you guys are already talking SXSW?  You bet your ass we are!  Now still a little over a month or so away, we wanted to kick off our SXSW watchlist bands this year with Victoria, BC band Jets Overhead.  Hailing from the great white north, you can hear the obvious Stars/Metric/Broken Social Scene influences that run deep in the sounds of this band.  Of course the ATH loves those sounds!  Not to write them off as just another Canadian atmospheric rock band, Jets Overhead also show some 70s psych rock parts similar to elements of Velvet Underground (anyone else agree on that?).  Now touring behind their second full length LP No Nations, the Canadians will be making their way into Austin during SXSW week and we think you should give them a go.  Being as early as it is, we can’t find much information about when and where the band is actually playing.  We’ll keep ya posted.

Corto Maltese on Daytrotter

cortoWe love the project over at Daytrotter, especially when they do work with local Austin bands. Corto Maltese is one of the younger bands around town who are making a name for themselves. Their Daytrotter session is full of four unreleased songs recorded during SXSW. Unfortunately, the band have no current shows lined up, but at least we have these new songs.

Daytrotter SXSW Sessions

20030654-3737972Damn you Daytrotter!  We promised these people no more posts about Glasvegas and then you go and do this!  What we’re talking about is a new series of live performances on the Daytrotter website featuring bands recorded during SXSW.  The sessions are extra special because each band takes a few of their songs and turns them into acoustic mini-ballads.  Right now the site has sessions posted by our very own Strange Boys and of course ATH favorite Glasvegas.  Check out this cry yourself to sleep at night version of Geraldine (also one of our songs of ’08).  Keep checking back to daytrotter often as more sessions are said to be on the way.

FT5: Anticipated SXSW Artists Releases

0313top5cover1While we were roaming around town last week, we started thinking about some of the upcoming releases that have got us peeing our pants in anticipation this year. Then we saw some of these artists during SXSW and got even more excited for what’s to come. For today’s Top 5, we wanted to take a look at some of theses new releases and rank them in order of just how excited we are about them. Some big names who were in town (Decemberists, Dan Auerbach, etc.) have already put out some solid releases this year, so we’re hoping that these won’t let us down. Follow the jump for our full Top 5 of anticipated releases from SXSW artists.

Austin 360 Writer Hates Austinites

Okay so maybe that headline is a little harsh, but you’ve got to read this Austin 360 article by Michael Corcoran.  Michael apparently thinks SXSW is being ruined by all you locals who just want to go to free parties, see some good bands and aren’t part of the “industry”.  Thems fightin’ words if you ask me!  It’s hard to tell if this is intended as a piece of satire just to mess with your head or if he’s really upset.  Regardless, check it out and give him a piece of your “tatooed daycare worker” mind.  Thanks to Mike from Sonic Itch for the tip.

SXSW In Pictures

sxsw2009pics_coverWe took loads of photos during SXSW and wanted to share just a few of the better ones with you.  We had some camera trouble during the week so we didn’t get everywhere we wanted to be, but we hope you like the shots we made out with. Our goal was to give you an idea of what SXSW is like with pictures of bands, crowds and people. Pictures of our showcase will be up for your enjoyment tomorrow. Follow the jump to see some random photography from our insane week of SXSW fun.
