SXSW Watchlist: Fanfarlo

Fanfarlo have become frequent residents of Austin over the last year having played 2-3 shows during the calendar year.  Unfortunately, like an idiot, I have missed these guys the last few times they’ve come to town so I’m putting them down as a band to see during SXSW.  Currently touring behind their 2009 debut Reservoir, this London based band has been touring like crazy and building a buzz behind their band.  Several of our local amigos have seen them live and tell us that we definitely won’t want to miss out this time around.  Prior to their Austin arrival, we had the chance to ask drummer/vocalist Amos Memon a few questions about his band.  You’ll notice that we’ve been recycling some questions from our SXSW bands to help you get to know them better and so we can pump out tons of interviews for you fans.  Follow the jump for full interview with Amos.

New Tunes from Jeremy Jay

Those who’ve been following us know just how much we here at ATH love Jeremy Jay.  Not only has he already released several albums of classic American pop, but he’s got more on the way.  Splash, his newest album, is set to hit stores on May 25th via K Recs, and our preliminary listens have us thinking this will be one of our favorites of the year (or mine at least).  If you like what you hear, you need to make sure to check out Jeremy this year at SXSW.  He’s playing for free at Urban Outfitters (3/17), Beauty Bar (3/17-Official), and Flamingo Cantina (3/18).  You’ll want to check the guy out, and then you’ll want to get your hands on his new album, and those old ones are probably required for your collection as well.

SXSW Watchlist: The Antlers

The Antlers are a band who have grown in leaps and bounds over the last year or so.  This new found fame is thanks in large part to the band’s critically acclaimed LP of last year Hospice.  Since that release, Antlers have been touring like mad in the US and abroad to make a name for themselves and their music.  The band was originally created in 2006 as a solo project for Peter Siberman who later recruited himself a band to tour and record with.  You’ll have a few chances to check out The Antlers during SXSW and you won’t want to pass up that chance.  Trust me.  We were also luckily enough to speak briefly with leading man/founder Peter Siberman about his band.  You can find that full interview after the jump.

FT5: SXSW Bands I Have To See

What’s that ya say?  SXSW is almost upon us?  Get the F*** out!  With our fancy little music festival we call SXSW coming up in March, I wanted to take a quick look at some of the bands I just gotta see during the upcoming week.  Now obviously I had to stick to a few strict rules here.  For starters, the band has to be one I haven’t seen before.  Two, it has to actually be possible to see the band (sorry STP & Band of Horses).  Three, the band needs to be fairly new with high praises coming from us and others.  I’d say that about does it.  These are bands on the verge of breaking it big in the national scene.  Will they have what it takes to impress me and the snobby Austin music scene with their live shows?  Only time will tell…  Follow the jump for my full list of bands I’ll be waiting in line to see during SXSW.

SXSW Watchlist: Matt Pond PA

mattpondpaMatt Pond PA is a band that we’ve been following for years now so they were an easy choice for us to spotlight on our SXSW watchlist.  Matt Pond PA have been around for a loooooong time and they seem to be that band always coming in just a bit under the radar.  You won’t hear these guys on the radio nor will you read much about them on P4K or The Gum.  Regardless, we’ve always found the songs of Matt Pond PA a soothing mixture of slow pop jams that best fit in with a good cup of coffee during your Sunday morning hangover time.  Their 2004 release Emblems has also got to be one of my favorite “indie” albums of all time.  Continue after the jump to read our short interview with leading man Matt Pond.

New Tunes from The Bewitched Hands on Top of Our Heads

Occasionally you get an email with an MP3 from a band you really know nothing about.  Usually, you listen once, realize you don’t dig it, and discard.  Just the opposite happened when I first put on The Bewitched Hands on Top of Our Heads.  Their single “Hard to Cry” went by easily at first, but something about the building harmonies caught me, and I had to play it again. Made up of six folks from France, The Bewitched Hands will grab hold of you, tugging you into their world of intelligent pop music.  The band will be around all during the week of SXSW, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on those events soon.

SXSW Watchlist: Still Life Still

slsWe continue our highlight on a few SXSW bands this week with Canadian outfit Still Life Still.  Having formed close to 10 years ago, you would expect this band to be a lot more well known in the national blogosphere.  However, when you take into account that the guys formed up as teenagers and have had a few band names changes, it’s not surprising that they still fly a bit under the radar.  Still Life Still even fly a bit under our radar, as we sort of missed out on their admirable debut LP of 09 Girls Come Too.  The stand out track from that album “Kid” can be found below.  It sounds a bit like some old school post-emo bands with a bit more of a pop beat backing it.  Also, our SXSW watchlists from here on out will now include a brief 5-6 question interview of questions we generated for our favorite SXSW artists.  We hope this helps you to get to know these artists a little bit better.  Still Life Still band member Brendon Sarinnen answers our questions after the jump.
