Mope City Share Rocket Surgery

Ever just wanna get in your feelings? Well, have you tried listen to Sydney outfit Mope City? I’m quite partial to their 2019 LP News from Home, but this new single is pretty much putting me into a one track state of mind. Just imagine the abandoned child of Low and Bedhead being left on your record player. There’s distorted edges, barely shaking your speakers, careful not to overplay against the underlying melody. This new jam features on the band’s forthcoming LP for Tenth Court, Within the Walls, which drops on April 30th, but the Rocket Surgery EP has three bonus tracks recorded during that session that will certainly put you in the mood for what’s in store here!

Stream Zipper’s Dreamer’s Gate EP

There’s a slew of releases I missed last week trying to take a few hours for myself and my family, but this Zipper one is definitely one I would have shared last week. Dreamer’s Gate is a collection of five songs of swirling guitars and pounding rhythms, propelled forward by natural pop inclinations and Haruka’s voice. Don’t let that fool you though, as there’s a heavy darkness reverberating throughout the entirety of these five tracks; it builds this super tension that makes you anxious at every single turn, particularly if you’re listening to “Ice,” which is one of my favorite songs off the EP. The whole thing is available via Tenth Court, so give it a listen!

Gordi Releases One More Single

Over the last month or so I must have been asleep while Australian based musician Sophie Payten, known musically as Gordi, released several stunning singles to preview her upcoming album. Well I stay asleep no more and am very pleased to share with you all this mesmerizing new single called “Extraordinary Life”. It is a truly haunting, yet lovely piece of music which seemingly combines songwriter elements like Joni Mitchell with a dash of some darker qualities like The Knife. Somehow the breathy, hushed quality of the vocals combines to work perfectly with the piano, sparse drums and plucked guitar. Not something that would typically fall in my wheelhouse, but I am struggling to resist hitting play on this one over and over again.

Gordi will release Our Two Skins on Friday, June 26th via JagJaguwar.

Sachet Share Arncliffe Babylon

I’m a really big fan of off-kilter punk of the pop sort, which is exactly what Sydney’s Sachet are offering on their latest single. The way they write their choruses sort of forces you to sort of lose your balance; you’re intoxicated and hooked, but you can’t find your feet beneath you. Still, one of the more endearing qualities from the group is their bubblegum choruses, as if they know you need to wash your ears of those discordant twanging guitars they’ve been brandishing. It’s simultaneously rough and saccharine, which is the perfect way for us to move into Thursday. Look for the band’s Net LP on April 30th via Tenth Court!

Stream Mostly Sunny from Flowertruck

Not too long ago I posted the lead track from Flowertruck, claiming it shared some sonic similarities to Orange Juice, not to mention, it just felt fun. Now, you can take the chance on something new and stream the entirety of the Aussie band’s new LP, Mostly Sunny. Aside from the opener, there’s some swelling pop songs like “Rain,” for those who love grandiose pop. There’s some punch new-wave numbers like “New Is the Saddest Word,” letting you into the club where music’s meant to be fun. Something carefree lurks below, so go ahead and enjoy the frivolous debut from Down Under.

Julia Jacklin Delivers Again

Julia Jacklin has slowly become one of my favorite female voices in the music world over the last year or so. She seems to effortlessly deliver in this sort of restrained, raspy tone while seemingly on the verge of exploding at any moment. Add in just the right amount of bluesy guitar, and you’d be spot on in a description of her latest single “Cold Caller”. It won’t get much better than this in the singer/songwriter genre.

“Cold Caller” is part of a 7″ single release out today on Polyvinyl Records. Maybe you should order a copy here. Flip side single “Eastwick” can be heard here.

Powerful Number From CREO

Well now that’s an introduction to a band. Yes this new song called “Subtitles For X, Y, Z” is proving as a very strong first step forward for Sydney based outfit CREO. It’s rare to find a song which seemingly evolves into 2-3 different styles as we are taking through the depths of the three and a half minute opus. What begins as anthemic rock similar to earlier Arcade Fire build and builds as it ends with over a minute of gritty and angry, throaty vocal infused rock. We can all find a little something to like in that right?

CREO will release new EP Subtitles For X, Y, Z on September 8th.

New Sloan Peterson Tune

While we usually give Melbourne a lot of focus here, we’ll be turning to Sydney where we find songwriter Sloan Peterson offering up some solid indie rock. Listening to this track, you can see Sloan fitting in with the styles present in a lot of current US contemporaries, bringing in these faintly hazy vocals to push the semi-psych pulse of the tune. I love that there’s not tricks, just a simple straight aheads blast of enjoyable pop music. She’s in the process of finishing up touches on her self-titled EP, which is set to be everywhere later on in the summer.

Another Spacy Number from Au.Ra

1799080_618982538233960_3618200909817826660_oA few weeks ago Nicole tossed out a track from Au.Ra, who specialize in a spacier version of the Australian psych sound that’s been popularized by the likes of Tame Impala.  But, while they hold true to that sound, the duo’s delivery has a special approach that uses the negative space, filling it with smooth washes of electronic flourishes.  There’s a relaxation to it, which allows the music to move in a quieter direction that I think you’ll appreciate.  It’s just another reason to keep Jane’s Lament on your radar as we move towards the March 3rd release date.
