It’s been a minute since we’ve heard a proper Bart Davenport record, and it feels like this year already deserves his craft. His songwriting has a very classic pop vibe, though there are these little touches that make him seem masterful and timeless. At times, you can hear little flirtations with the Beatles or the like, maybe even a touch of Beach Boys in the chorus to boot. But, in truth, I feel like he evades these trappings; his voice has its own intoxicating style that supersedes all the musical nods, leaving us with a pop song that we won’t soon forget. His new album Episodes is out March 25th via Tapete.

David Christian and the Pinecone Orchestra Share Single

Avowed Comet Gain fans (like me) will always clamor for more whenever something from David Christian pops up out there, so I was super stoked to hear that David’s turned his solo writing into a proper release with assistance from the Pinecone Orchestra. Personally, this first single is precisely the sort of lyrical wordplay that made me fall in love with Comet Gain in the late 90s, and I’m marveling at the clarity in the mix here, which really allows for the craft to shine. You get sweeping slide guitar, tinkering piano and powerful backing vocals, all of it giving off a very settled poetic vibe. For Those We Met on the Way looks set to come out via Tapete Records in November of this year.

The Telescopes Ready Songs of Love and Revolution

What do you do when you’ve been at it for over 30 years, working away at the underbelly of rock n’ roll? Well, if you’re the Telescopes, you do what you know best, you keep pushing further and further; this is where we meet the band for their 12th LP, Songs of Love and Revolution. The tune below finds the band descending into the cavernous depths of Earth, dark and shadowy from start. As listeners go deeper into the song, echoes of jittering feedback reverberate through your skull, united with the grim throb of the rhythm section. Vocals almost feel like an afterthought, foreboding and haunted…seems like a warning. Excited to hear exactly what this group comes up with when the LP drops; it hits on February 5th via Tapete Records.

Gary Olson Shares Some Advice

About a month ago we were treated to the first single from the forthcoming Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) LP, and now we’ve got another number, which might be even better than our first listen. Honestly, my first few runs through, I thought about how accessible his songwriting was, despite my tendency to claim indie superiority; it’s the sort of track that I could play for my mum and dad that would surely charm them. In the casual pop, you’ll find some really great arrangements working too, which seems to be the staple of a lot of the stuff Gary’s worked on as of late; I loved the horn section coming in just after the 3 minute mark…felt like a very B&S nod. The self-titled album is out on May 29th via Tapete Records.

Gary Olson Announces Solo Debut

Tapete Records is becoming a powerhouse for some of the best indiepop in the world, so it should come as no surprise that they’ve grabbed onto Gary Olson of Ladybug Transistor for his debut solo record. Our first listen has that classic pop vibe, using huge sweeping string accompaniment to add textured layers to the gentle strumming of the guitars. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s this delightful skip of energy around the 2:40 mark, adding a slight boost before riding off into the song’s proverbial sunset. This feels like the perfect way to daydream through the rest of your Friday; look for the record to drop May 29th.

The Year in Indiepop…According to Nathan

As we’re all looking back on the year 2019, I tend to gravitate towards lists with little agenda, other than to shine a light back on the year in the areas I adore. For one, the indiepop scene. Now, there’s always a great big debate about what indie pop is, so for all intents and purposes, I admit that I just don’t care, so the genre’s purists can yell at me later. Now, this may read as a best of, but merely this is the stuff that stuck out in my brain, so if I missed something, I love you and I’m sorry. Honestly, it just gave me a chance to make a fun playlist (2+ hours!) full of hits for all you pop fans.

Comet Gain Share We’re All Fucking Morons

In my opinion, it’s never a bad thing to start off your Monday with a Comet Gain tune. Here we are revisiting the recently released single “We’re All Fucking Morons” from the band’s forthcoming Fireraisers Forever. It’s a digression from the first single we heard, which was more of a pop song, though this one feels more like the band’s tried-and-true formula. It’s got this matter of fact vocal delivery, with this fuzzy stomp going on just behind; it almost feels like you could see the band playing at some modern psych festival of sorts, particularly with those keys popping their head up to maintain the rhythmic sensation. This band rules. New LP out on October 11th via Tapete Records.

Obligatory Comet Gain Post

This post gets to be the first of the day because the song’s been out for 24 hours and has popped up where all the cool kids gravitate. Normally I stay away from such things, but I’ve always sort of felt like the Comet Gain were simply a band solely for me. I can still remember the first time I stumbled upon Casino Classics in a chat room for nerds in the late 90s. I still say City Fallen Leaves is my favorite. Alas, the new stuff. I think my favorite on the new LP is “Bad Nite at the Mustache,” but the chorus on “Mid 8Ts” is just so striking that its bound to get stuck in your head all day long. Listening now, I just don’t get how more people don’t adore the fuck out of this band. Just go listen. Fireraiser Forever is out October 11th via Tapete Records.

Don’t Sleep on The Catenary Wires

The Catenary Wires history is perhaps far deeper than their discography, but in their short time, Amelia Fletcher and Rob Pursey have already worked with some of my favorite labels in Elefant, WIAIWYA and Matinee…and now their sophomore release is slated for new powerhouse, Tapete Records. This fresh single puts the band’s dynamic at the forefront, relying upon the interplay between the two, trading vocal duties with one another, uniting in certain instances to maximize the harmony; Amelia has this sparkling nostalgic movie star tone, while Rob has this more forlorn croon. The string arrangement dropping in just before the 3 minute mark keeps listeners aware that both the music and voice will be broad sweeping on Til the Morning; it’s out June 14th via Tapete.

Fresh Elva Track for You

I’ve seen lots of lists about the most anticipated albums of the next few months, and sadly, none of the ones I’ve seen include Elva; I’m here to remedy that for me, and for you. “Ghost Writer” is the band’s newest single from their forthcoming Winter Sun LP. It has this spry bounce to it from the churning of the guitar chords; it reminds me an indiepop version of early Beulah. The big difference here, at least in what we’ve heard thus far, is that Ola takes the reigns on the vocals, with Elizabeth (of Allo’ Darlin) taking up the backing vocal roll, and together they craft this sublime harmony that rides throughout the song…all the way to the fuzzy guitar chord that jumps in for the song’s last minute. Winter Sun drops on April 19th via Tapete Records.
