Oakwood Return!

Oakwood is one of those Austin bands who we feared may have met the fate of many bands we used to love in this town – initial success, followed by a step away from music. It’s not easy to exist creatively here, and we are hyper aware of that.

We do find it crazy refreshing when you see a band you used to really dig make a comeback like Oakwood did a year or so ago with a new single and some live dates. This year it seems the band is really back for good, and in full force, with more planned shows and a full LP coming at the end of May. They’ve shared a new song today called “A Tangled Mess” to tease the new material with the band’s brand of post-emo meets alternative sound. It’s really hitting the nostalgia chord with me today, in a vintage, yet refreshing way. Hell yeah.

Oakwood’s new album entitled Blurred Away hits the streets on May 29th. Pre-orders are live now. They’ve algo got a comeback show of sorts planned for the same day at Mohawk featuring a solid lineup of locals opening. We’ll be there!

Teethe Release Hate Goodbyes

This new single from Teethe shares accompanying musicianship from folks in the Wednesday/Hovvdy camp, but really, I continue to just dive right into their relaxed approach to slowcore. On this number, the entirety of the tune feels like watching the blurred horizon bouncing off the asphalt on a summer drive along an empty Texas highway; it’s obviously careful in its pacing, but the arrangements around the edges definitely create this wholeness that continues to illustrate the promise that the new record brings with it. Magic of the Sale is dropping on August 8th, and if you the participants in the recording process are anything to go by, the album feels like its already built for the masses.

Premiere: Harmony From Porcelain

When some folks around here try to claim that the Austin music scene is “dead” or somehow “not like the old days,” I usually just respond that those people simply aren’t paying attention. As an example, locals Porcelain put out this amazing self-titled LP last year that totally rips and should have been seen on even more year ends lists. Making things even more exciting, the band has more new tunes planned this year, including this new track called “Harmony.” It will introduce itself with a pure force of energy, matching gritty vocals with a total alt-rock meets grunge feel. You simply must check it out below.

This song is part of a new single EP which is available for purchase this Friday, July 9th via fellow local label Todo Records.

ATX Spotlight: Gustave Ochoa

Per discussions with lots of pals in the music community here in ATX, it’s often easy to get bogged down with the current state of scenes and styles – rock, shoegaze, gimmicks, and what have you. While combing through it all, often it is a welcome change to find an artist who can cut loose from the norm and get back to true songwriting at its core. Really, that’s what Austin has always been about.

If you are yet to know the name, my pal Gustave Ochoa looks to carry on that great legend and mystique of Texas songwriters with his new debut solo EP Highwire. With his lyrics and style, Ochoa is clearly gifting us with a small glimpse into some of the things he holds most dear and closest to his chest. I have always found some of the best and most classic singer/songwriter moments come in those moments of personal vulnerability. You gotta check this one out below or over on Spotify. Stay tuned for heard rumors of more to come.

Teethe Announce Magic of the Sale

Been a minute since we heard new music from Texas outfit Teethe, but today there is great news, with the band announcing their next LP, Magic of the Sale, along with the release of the title track. This tune operates with a downtrodden pace, which often gives the band a nod towards slowcore. But, there’s this slight jangle and build from the guitars, creating this delicious melodic center that quietly explodes once you cross the two minute mark. There are these moments when you think the track can just burst, yet the restraint to lock into the groove and let the song just billow on its own makes it the perfect feel. Magic of the Sale will be out this August via Winspear.

SXSW Interviews 2025: Saint Blonde

One week away people. Just one more short week away from the chaos and joy that comes with the annual SXSW festival in Austin, TX. Though one can never be truly prepared for everything, we hope you fans have at least had some time to peruse the band list to find something that sparks your interest. Hopefully another interview set, this time from Texas natives Saint Blonde, will further spark some musical interest in your ear holes. Levitation Interviews: Strange Lot

Levitation Festival kicks off on Thursday here in Austin with a great lineup of bands coming into town for shows going down all over downtown. It should be another good time to catch up with some old palls while hopping between venues near and around Red River. Trauma Ray Share Bardo Single

This new Trauma Ray record is going to get a lot of play at my house, and this new single sees them reaching back into my own early listening habits as a teenage, bringing back to the present. The track wastes no time in hammering you with noise, hurtling riffs right at you as they lock into a pseudo-metal thrash. Still, there’s something in their craft that reveals little melodic moments, sort of like the light shining under a door in a darkened hallway; it reminds me a lot of when Deftones switched to more melodic notes during White Pony, but were still able to bring the noise. They release Chameleon on October 25th via Dais.

Trauma Ray Share Spectre

When looking back at this year’s albums, trying to figure out what will wrap up the Best of the Year lists, I’m hoping that this new Trauma Ray LP ends up on a lot of lists. This new single builds quietly, creeping along in the shadows with this slowcore styling. Suddenly, it erupts and drops in this block of noise, billowing through your speakers, and with the appropriate volume, rattling the inside of your house. It’s both quiet and loud, and always moving and morphing, which I adore as a listener. You’re really going to want to grab a copy of Chameleon, out October 25th via Dais.

ATX Spotlight: Sundozer Shares Still Life

I was just having a conversation this weekend about some of my favorite new bands in Austin, and while often folks drop the same big names, we always have great new bands existing just under the surface. ATX based musician Christian Luis French is a great example who currently makes music under the moniker Sundozer after many years with other projects. The music has a sort of underground, garage psych feel too it, but with the speed and energy turned way way up. None of that contemplative, mellow psych stuff here. Have a listen to new single “Still Life” below and let us know what you think.

Sundozer will release this track as part of a new EP entitled Death Bloom, which is due out on March 28th.
