Last Week’s Jams (4.22 – 4.26)

It’s been a strange few weeks if I’m looking at the numbers on our Last Week’s Jams; we’ve run 28 songs for the last three weeks, compiling a fun playlist that runs at 1.5 hours. Well, whatever, time’s on your side my friends. We were fortunate to premiere a couple of stellar tunes this week from the Ar-Kaics and Noelle and Deserters; one offers a crackling fire of psychedelia while the other is a bit more old school western vibes. And, there was the joyous return of Bad Moves! Of course, we also filled the pages with new stuff from Lightheaded, Laughing, Luma Fade, Lunchbox and the Laughing Chimes…you know, all the big Ls! Some Austin love as always via mentions of new records from Don’t Get Lemon and Hovvdy too. Sit back and get into Monday.

Premiere: The Ar-Kaics Share Cornerstone

For all the ferrymen along the river of psychedelia, I wouldn’t be lying if I said things had perhaps traveled a bit too far into the realm of the mundane. That said, I love the flare and style that the Ar-Kaics bring to the fold; they almost seem like their more enlightened by the annals of classic rock as opposed to the tethered nostalgia of psych rock. You can hear the need to get down and boogie in their craft, with guitar crisp and steamy, packing a huge punch that gives off a bit of sweaty swagger. You’ll find that the coolness of the vocals brings in a refreshing touch, almost as if they embody a wolf howling at the moon before settling into a little soulful blast. Patrick Fugit can’t wait for you to hear those incendiary riffs that run throughout the whole of See the World on Fire; it drops on May 3rd via Feel It/Dig/Bachelor Records.

Last Week’s Jams (4.8 – 4.12)

Apparently it’s that time of year when I just can’t help myself; I’m going full-time it seems, as we ran 28 brand new tracks this last week, plus some nods to albums we liked that dropped on Friday. We got some fresh premiere activity from the Wesleys and Max Blansjaar, then there were some recent favorites dropping in new stuff like Lightheaded, Neutrals and Autocamper. Me personally, I loved the new Gregor single, and that new CBVB plays into similar territory. This collection of songs, like my own catalog, is pretty random, though we always tend to aim for left of the left of the dial. Stream on.

The Ar-Kaics Share Stone Love

While the latter half of this fresh Ar-Kaics tune takes off in a fiery ball of psychedelic stomp, you’ve got to lock into the classic rock grooves of the first minute or so of the tune. There’s a bit of an assured swagger to the riff work, but there’s this openness that seems faintly celebratory, like one’s gathered up in a van full of friends and ready to hit the road. When they hit the road, tambourines and shakers are passed around and everyone’s on board to ignite the fire that lights up the song’s latter half. There’s definitely an interesting juxtaposition, as the front half totally owes a debt to the classic while the back half is more akin to early Oh Sees or Black Angels. They’ll release See the World On Fire via Feel It/Bachelor Records.
