The Birthday Letters Share My Kronstadt Video

The Birthday Letters will be releasing Human Beauty next week, and maybe this single will help put the album in your consciousness. Musically, there’s some interesting things going on here that piqued my interest, both dealing with familiarity. First, Joseph Hughes vocals have a faint resemblance to Ben Gibbard, and while my interest in DFC has waned, that voice was super prominent in my early 20s; there’s something soothing about the softness. Second, the music kind of reminds me of that sort of British trip-hop spun through a more modern Radio Dept vibe; its like a melodic dance party for your ears! If you dig it, don’t forget the record drops next week!

The Birthday Letters Drift Towards Indiepop

When I first remember listening to the Birthday Letters, they definitely seemed to have more of a folk influence in the songwriting. But, now the band have returned with a brand new track, this time giving us a glimpse of shimmering indiepop. They’ve added a keyboard player this round, which ends up fleshing out the band’s sound, allowing Joseph Hughes to play his gentle vocals atop the mix. I love the mix on this track, utilizing slight acoustic guitar, a shaker and synthy drum vibes to add textural depth to the tune. This song will appear on the group’s Mythos Pathos EP.

Chilled Pop Music from The Birthday Letters

Really enjoying the subtle vibes on this great pop hit from The Birthday Letters. There’s a casual opening bit that immediately slides you into the song; it’s mostly just vocals with faint instrumentation. Things pick up just a little bit as Joseph Hughes croons atop a slightly fuller sound, but there’s brilliant balance in the entire composition. It’s a song you’d likely play driving with the windows down, while on the flipside, you could easily have the song on late night listening rotations. This song pops up on the We Never Talk About Paradise (We Do God) EP.
