Show Preview: Snail Mail + Goon Sax @ ACL Live (Tonight!)

Lindsey Jordan’s meteoric rise should come as no surprise to anyone, but with the release of Valentine, that build was cemented. So, it should come as no shocker that Snail Mail will be playing ACL Live this evening. But, other than remind you of the draw of that band, I’d like to take a minute to encourage those attending, or thinking of attending, to show up and see Goon Sax. Through three albums, we’ve raved about the band’s sound, and Mirror II showed the band continuing to grow their sound; there’s a maturity in the writing this go round, warranting an opening slot on one of the biggest US tours. Plus, its not every day you get a chance to see an Australian group on these shores (as touring becomes more challenging). We’ve got their whole 2nd LP streaming below, as its the one I’ve been spinning the most this morning! If you want tickets, they’re still available HERE.

The Week in Music May 10 – 14

Here we are. Here you are. It’s Monday morning, so let’s go back in time. Way way back, to last week. We’ve got new hits from the Goon Sax and Quivers, as well as some more obscure stuff like Keron and Nina Savary. Plus, we’ve got some old favorites in Dentist, Leon Bridges and Tapeworms, piled on top of a few tunes we dug that already got the mass of hype you’d expect. As per our tastes, its all over the place, which is sort of how I’m feeling on this Monday morning. Have a rad day my friends!

The Goon Sax Announce Mirror II

Through two albums, the Goon Sax have been nearly flawless with their brand of jangling guitar pop, but as they announce Mirror II, their third LP, it sounds like they’re taking some chances. In this tune, both the video and the song seem to have this heavy anxiety, almost a sense of foreboding; it’s a weight that even seems to hold the chorus down, with Riley and Louis seemingly holding back where they’ve been buoyant before. Still, that little change has me drawn to the tune like a moth to the light; I particularly like Riley’s vocal performance just as the song fades to nothing but synths and drums at the 3 minute mark. They’ve changed things up a bit, while still managing to sound wholly like the vibrant pop band that seemingly sprung out of nowhere; I’ve got to applaud them for pushing their sound into new territory. I look forward to hearing more from Mirror II…out July 9th via Matador Records.

Another Charmer from the Goon Sax

This Goon Sax tune dropped on the Internet yesterday, but I was working at the real job and such, so wasn’t able to get to it quite yet…until this morning! Admittedly, it’s one of my favorite tunes off of their new LP, so I had extra encouragement. I love how the track opens up with vocals working over a percussive loop and quiet piano chords. Then it switches, with an acoustic guitar strum accompanying the male vocals; I wasn’t completely sold, however, until drummer Riley joins the vocal fray for a powerful verse. The youthful attachment was shed for me on this song, as it showed me a great maturity I might not even have been expecting. We’re Not Talking drops on September 14th via Wichita Recordings/Chapter Music.

New Track from The Goon Sax

I feel like The Goon Sax should be one of the great bands of our age, yet they still have so much potential to grow. On their latest single, they’re taking their angular pop stylings and turning painting them with a broader pop brush. There’s an accent from the cowbell to add some step, but the chorus has swelling strings and horns blasting through. It’s enchanting, yet cautiously energetic; you’ll have this song running through your head all day. The band’s new album We’re Not Talking will be out on September 14th via Wichita Recordings.

The Goon Sax Announce New LP

In 2016, The Goon Sax were a bunch of young Australians who delivered one of our favorite albums, Up to Anything. A lot of folks have been waiting in the wings with the promise of new tunes…and today is that day! We get a fresh track, employing a similar tactic to their early work, though there seems to be depth. I’m a sucker for the deep bass grooves, not to mention the mixture of steady vocals and their female counterpoints. Infectious guitar pop anyone? Yes, please! The band will be releasing We’re Not Talking on Wichita Recordings/Chapter Music on September 14th.

Top 50 Albums of 2016

top50You’ve all been waiting, anxiously. Waiting for our arbitrary list of the opinion of four folks who run this site, and what we think were the best albums of 2016. It’s really really important. We’re going to make our site great again with this list. We’re going to win, bigly. But really, it’s just a list of the stuff we loved the most that we covered throughout this year on our site. The comment section is open, so feel free to tell us where we’ve gone wrong or what we’ve got right or anything else fitting. Read more

Fresh Track from The Goon Sax

goonsAfter the exceptional “Boyfriend” single, my expectations for the Goon Sax debut album were riding super high. Their new single takes on a slightly different stroke, but it’s keeping it’s lofty aim. There’s a slower pace hanging out in this song, similar to other Australian artists who’ve been unfairly titled dole-wave. What’s most astonishing is how polished and perfect these tracks are, and the band themselves aren’t even in their twenties. This IS the next great Australian band, I promise you that. Look for Up to Anything on March 11th via the ever-reliable Chapter Music.

Check Out This New Video From The Goon Sax

goonsaxEveryone loves a good stripped down pop song, so this video from The Goon Sax should be a perfect treat for you on this Thursday. The Goon Sax are a trio of youths out of Brisbane who make simple yet catchy pop tunes, and as you’ll see in this music video, rely on their lovely balance of male/female vocals. “Boyfriend” is their latest single from their upcoming record, and the music video features the band blank-facedly playing the track, alternating with shots of the frontman and his ideal boyfriend. I definitely got a little chuckle out of the video, as well as got this song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.Their debut release, Up To Anything is due out in March of next year via Chapter Records, so get excited for that.

More the Goon Sax Music

GoonSax2MIDYou shouldn’t be surprised that Australia’s the Goon Sax are making waves, seeing as sites all over are clamoring for the next great thing to come out of the country. Luckily, this young group has the leadership of Chapter Music to guide them in the right direction, though this song might show that they don’t need too much. It’s the sort of casual pop that’s been popping up here and there on the Interwebs, always with positive commentary. Really, when there’s good songwriting, you can’t help but to listen…pretty sure this song qualifies. That’s my advice to the world: write simple, good pop songs. This gem will appear on the band’s forthcoming Up to Anything record, which is being released by Chapter in April of next year.
